VW dealer replaced Tiguan discs 10 months ago. Says they need replacing again

    2018 Tiguan, all discs and pads replaced in March 2020. Had a service done and they tell me the front discs need replacing again as there's corrosion on the inside.

    29k km done since they were last changed.

    The first set of discs had 75k on them...

    Convenient that the first NCT is due this month...?

    Is March 2020 not two years ago?


    What's convenient about it?


    Discs could easily be worn again after 30k/ 2 years.

    I'd be pretty pissed having to replace discs at 30k km but it seems to be more and more the case that discs seem to need changing near as often as pads.

    Sounds like Bs to me, put it through the NCT and then you will know whether you're being taken for a ride, which i suspect.

    It's become a bit of a thing to replace discs when replacing pads as a matter of course, which imo is nonsense. I've put twenty year old cars through the NCT on original discs with no problems.

    There's a world between the NCT and a service inspection. The NCT is nothing more than a bare minimal safety inspection.


    Your brake discs would have to be in a terrible state to fail an NCT, over 30% of the friction surface has to be unusable or a visual lip you could cut your finger on.


    Just because your brakes pass an NCT today, doesn't mean they are safe tomorrow.


    A 2018 Tiguan isn't a 20 year old car, it's reasonably powerful and with a couple of passengers, weighs the guts of two tonnes.


    If it's doing a lot of town driving/ short trips, it wouldn't be too surprising if the discs are past their best.


    A photo would tell a thousand words though OP, did you get a health check video?

    WTF are VW making discs from that they don't last 30,000km? I've had pads last longer that.

    I get that driving style, etc, etc can have a significant influence on the life of braking components but for discs to be shot after 30,000km just sounds wrong to me.

    If it was me, I'd be getting a second opinion to rule out over enthusiastic VHC upsell.

    I'd also be interested to see a photo of these discs.

    Was the car sitting for a long period of time during lockdown? March 2020 is when it all kicked off so it would not be beyond the realms of possibility that the disks corroded badly from sitting.

    In any case, I would expect brake disks to last more than 30k unless VW are making them out of chocolate.

    The problem is that a lot of discs these days are made out of chocolate. I know Master vans for example are chewing through discs before the 30k mark and I'm sure it is the same for other brands.

    Corrosion is slightly different though, and though the mileage was 30k was there an extended period within the 2 years where the car was sitting up? I assume there was, if the car did 75k in the first 2 years and less than half that in the next 2 years.

    I’d agree above about the NCT. I have sent cars through the NCT that have break discs with massive lips on them and they pass no bother, the break test doesn’t seem to be very good in the NCT.

    I would imagine VW are trying to upsell you tho. Probably loads of life left in the breaks but we would have to see them first

    Corrosion on one side suggests the calipers aren't working right, assuming they're floating calipers then maybe the slide pins have seized? You know, something you would expect a main dealer to inspect and lubricate during a brake pad change...

    Typical with many things these days. ‘Stuff’ just does not last anymore. Poor materials, cost cutting, etc etc. it’s sad to see. There is no way on this earth discs should need changing after 20k miles; it’s ridiculous. Think back to when you drove in the ‘00s. Jesus, you’d have one set of discs for double that distance.

    Cars are so much heavier now though and that causes a huge amount more wear than you'd think. Brakes are more powerful too and with more power and weight you get more wear.

    That, IMO is the issue with a lot of these things. There's no use in comparing it to a car from 20 years ago.


    It's a bit like looking back on how your Nokia 3510 battery would last 4 or 5 days and now your iphone can barely go 12 hours. Yeah they're both phones but that's where the similarities end. The iphone is singing and dancing and doing things the 3510 could only dream of.


    Cars like the Tiguan didn't even exist 20 years ago.

    If you're driving it up and down the motorway doing the mileage you won't wear discs out

    That doesn't really mean anything though. It the car had done 5k/ 12 months or something like that in the meantime you'd say ah yeah maybe but 30k/ 2 years is IMO far enough driving to wear them or long enough sitting to rot them or in this case a combination of.


    The only other comment i'd agree with here is, is it an over eager vhc and the discs will clean up with a bit of driving.

    My comment was a reply to a poster saying new stuff is crap and doesn’t last.

    I’d be pissed if pads didn’t last 30k, never mind discs.
