They weren't interviews as such, they were the typically poorly put together and scripted mobile phone vox pops , virgin media news specialise in.

This said, when I was in 6th year, I'd two distinct choices, do the leaving or Don't, I didn't get to go on TV to moan and whinge, nor did I, or any leaving cert student get to dictate how leaving cert exams, managed.

This time around (3rd year of moaning) , the Teacher representative organisations are having none of it.

And yes, it's been tough , but for everyone 🙄

Was there a pandemic going on with school closures, online learning, zoom school, sicknesses, etc when you did your leaving?

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,978 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

No, but neither was there Zoom, Online Learning , indeed Internet and I might add, nowhere near the standard of education there is now.

I'm not going to get into a back and fourth on this but it would seem to me, students generally have been accommodated as best possible given the challenges , how students, in particular opinionated leaving cert students were given a platform to dictate policy is beyond me .

Because they are the ones directly affected by it. Not teachers, not parents, not people who did their leaving cert 20 years ago.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,978 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

God Bless them , and how about the rest of society , by far there's a greater cohort in society that has suffered during this pandemic . Our next generation have turned into whimpering spoiled brats, ably supported by the dogooders in society. Grow up is what I say.

We'll clearly disagree and so be it, I'll say no more on the topic.

Meanwhile Claire discussing Mullets and the latest male hair trends 🙄, very, very important current affairs Topic 🙄

Back to one of her most loved subjects - hair and hairdressers. Except for a bit of gender balance, in the barbers today.

What did we do to deserve this rubbish about hair and hair care ....... once a year is enough to cover the topic.

Dieting now.. for Gods sake. Claire Byrne's great obsessions - her hair and her dieting.

It's gone beyond pathetic at this stage, she might squeeze in a knitting segment before noon 😁

I got the impression you were having a go at the kids for having an opinion and not being great in front of a camera.

Maybe it's good to hear from them unlike in the old "seen and not heard" days.

They will grow up in time like most of us.

Anyway I see you are finished with the subject you raised in the first place.

So Barry Cowen says he doesn't feel afraid when out walking alone, but women do, granted, and I appreciate that but he's a great fella isn't he?! Being a male makes him immune to treat or harm from some tramp or scumbags.

As a male if I'm walking alone I'm always on edge of who I might be meeting or anyone behind me. I was out this morning for a walk after 7am and again I have to be aware of where I am and in which pocket my keys are Incase I need to reach for them. So don't let the media or these woke commentators make you believe that as a male it's all cushty when we're out for a walk alone, we don't meet other males with an acknowledging nod, a high five or chest bump before picking out knuckles up off the ground in hunt of some victim!! 😤😤

There was a wan on(maybe a journo) debating with politicans about the situation re antigen testing/quality/pricing/availability of face masks etc. She was going on about something being " more better." Her words. Hope all the leaving cert students whose mental health is out of kilter were not listening to her.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,978 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

Touché, I was half listening this morning, was utterly bored with this Men are all bastards nonsense being banded about I'm media circles 🙄

I doubt it's tongue and cheek . I suspect you believe it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,978 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

Please, let's get real here, have you been listening to or watching any of the hysterics across Irish Media over the past two days, its shocking.

One, yes one individual responsible for this henious crime, not the entire male population as some commentators would have us believe .

There's an appaling picture being painted across various outlets, especially RTE that the country is plagued by rampaging men , women are just not safe (Anywhere)

You know full well what I'm referring too , perhaps you want a back and forth, good luck with that 🙄

As in the specific comment "men are all bustards " but of course you know that , check other comments across boards on this particular topic.

That's my last word on it , but nice try at baiting

It's actually called tongue in cheek.

Given the seriousness of the matter being discussed it's probably understandable that a misunderstanding arose.

Oh good, this thread has descended to "not all men". Not surprised with the usual commenters though...

  • Registered Users Posts: 799 ✭✭✭kazamo

They are probably excluding their own nearest and dearest which is ironic as statistically women know their attackers, rather than the stranger danger frenzy we currently have.

I really do not see how legislation is going to change this. What happened Aisling was horrendous and shouldnt have happened. She seemed to have been a victim of an evil person - she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. However there always will be evil opportunists out there.

I am a woman and I am not afraid of every man. I take necessary precautions I do not walk alone in the dark, during the day I dont go to lonely places where I could be vulnerable - its as simple as this. The talk over the last few days by the media and certain feminists is really stupid talk. The majority of men are good - there is a very small minority who treat people badly.

Also when walking through the streets of Dublin for example I am as much afraid of certain women as certain men - noone is talking about this though.

You say you're not afraid, but also say that you take precautions like not walking alone in the dark, not going to vulnerable places, etc. As a man, I don't consider these as things that I personally need to worry about, but as a woman you do. Do you not see that this is an issue with society?

An interesting comparison I heard over the weekend was the issue of drink driving. I'm in my 30s and the idea that any of my peers would drink drive just doesn't arise - it's not a thing. Whereas in our parent's generation it was common. Tackling drink driving was a combination of legislation and education - why not the issue of violence against women?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,022 ✭✭✭Deeec

I take precautions because I know there is a very small number of evil people ( both male and female) out there and there always will be evil out there. My point is no amount of legislation is going to stop someone intent on committing evil deeds seizing an opportunity -. I dont think there is actually any way of stopping this.

The example you give of drink driving is completely different - if you drink drive there is a good chance you will be caught out. There are lots of murderers/rapists out there who are never caught - I dont think you can educate or legislate to stop someone evil or mentally deranged committing a crime.

Im guessing the person who murdered Ashling probably knew what they were doing was wrong so the fear of the law didnt stop him.
