Saturday 29th sees the start of a repeat of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

The first two episodes start at 10.30pm.

The next three episodes are at 10pm on Sunday.

The last two episodes are at 10pm on Monday.

The last episode is followed by a Mark Lawson interview with John le Carre from 2008.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy was first shown on BBC2 in Sep 1979.

    Nice one

It's one consolation that if BBC4 is morphing into an archive channel it will hopefully make some classic television available in Ireland (at least occasionally, whenever the schedulers are on form)

It's the kind of programming which the BBC would otherwise have buried on the IPlayer or Britbox and made very difficult for viewers here to access.

See Harry has closed his account, hope he comes back in another guise again, stalwart of this thread.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

I rewatched this again the past few nights, though missed a couple of episodes in the middle.

A curiosity; anyone notice how the closing scenes in one episode would provide the intro to the following episode. However, on at least a couple of occasions, the scene would be slightly different in the next episode. e.g. at the conclusion of an episode, Ian Bannen's character gets out of the car, walks a short bit, throws away the drinking bottle, and continues to walk towards the school's gate pillars. In the following installment, he throws away the bottle a lot later, nearer the pillars. Another e.g.; Smiley closes an episode, stating to the others in the room how they will have to concoct a plan. Same again for the next intro, but this time he's rubbing the side of his face when speaking. I wonder was this a deliberately confusing ploy by the director?

Good episode tonight. It’s good to have something decent to watch on a Saturday night. Gomorrah series 5 back in November.

I enjoyed it, but Beck himself seems to be taking very much a back seat.

On Sunday’s at 21:00 there is a brilliant series called World War 2: Behind closed doors.

It is about the political mechinations behind the scenes between Churchill, Roosevelt, Hitler and Stalin. Episode 4 is on Sunday. The first episode was horrific, I had to switch off.

But the betrayals and the cost in civilian lives, the sheer waste is unbelievable, not collateral but deliberate. Given that it’s by the BBC Britain is not shown in a particularly bad light, but Stalin comes out dreadfully, we all know about Adolf

it strains my belief in the goodness of human nature. That’s a different conversation so I’ll stop there.

It’ll be on iPlayer if you have it. It might even be on YouTube.

I have watched the first two episodes of The hunt for a killer.

    Blurb

Police officers Pelle Akesson and Monica Olhed lead the investigation of the disappearance of 10-year-old Helen Nilsson.

It's based on a true story, not showy and it's pretty slow but finding it gripping.

Binged on it over weekend, it's very good. Very dark and bleak too but tense and worth sticking with.

I'm up to episode 4...it's getting more and more gripping...really excellent

This was so good and it a true story. BBC 4 on a Saturday night always delivers.

Really terrific, it just got better and better. The pace wouldn't be for everyone but I found it so rewarding and brilliantly real.

This is actually quite good. Not usually into period dramas but it’s well worth a watch and it’s a true story.

What's happened the Scandi Noir production line?

BBC4's first big saturday series for 2022 is... RTE co-production Hidden Assets, starting January 15th.

I think channel4/more4 etc are hoovering up most of them now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 32,972 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

    Also isn't bbc4 being scrapped?

  • Registered Users Posts: 30,582 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Sort of. It'd just be for archive shows and arts\music performances.

In May 2020, the BBC submitted its annual general plan for 2020–21, which included a proposal for BBC Two to supplant BBC Four as its main outlet for specialist programmes. Under the plan, BBC Four would cease originating new programmes, and become a service showcasing the BBC's "rich archive".

Hidden assets is starting tonight at 9, does anyone who watched it on the Irish channel reckon its worth a go?

I watched it and enjoyed it. It's on RTE player as well. Even though not the same type of show, I thought it was better than Kin which was shown before this on RTE.
