He overcooked them. Overcooked is always better than raw anything

happy for him, he was great all series apart from last weeks blip

Although it was probably the right decision on the day, the final really needed more Jurgen. It felt a little underwhelming tonight but Guiseppe deserved it overall.

Good series, all told. I really enjoyed it and liked all the contestants.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,627 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

    Ah, delighted for Guiseppe!

It could have been anyone's in the end - well, until Crystelle's foccacia, I kinda figured it was a two-horse race after that.

Giuseppe was such a sweet character, I could listen to him talking all evening!

Those end titles were great as always, they always get me in the feels.

He surely did overcook them - Chigs was solid and didn't over bake or under bake anything this week so really he should've won. Up till this week if you had a bad week you were out - it's always about how you bake on the day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,209 ✭✭✭jos28

I delighted for Guiseppe although I thought Chiggs had it won. Either way they are all fantastic bakers and as GBBO finalists they will do well.

They seemed like a nice crew this year, fair play to them all

I think it was Crystelles until that focaccia that didn’t bake. I thought they’d give it to chiggs but I think Giuseppe was well worth it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,066 ✭✭✭appledrop

I was convinced Chigs had it in the bag.

He was definitely the best Baker tonight, however Giuseppe was best Baker during the overall series out of those three so deserved to win.

Actually in a way makes me even more annoyed that Jurgen went out last week based on one bad week!

I mean how many times did he win star Baker!!!!!!!

Should have had Jurgen in final. When I was watching last week I actually said to my husband they should break rules and have all four in final because you really couldn't call it last week, but they obviously didn't go for my brainwave idea!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,066 ✭✭✭appledrop

I was one of my favourite ever series, all the bakers genuinely seemed to really get on great+ you didn't get the sense that there was a lot of rivalry between them + they seemed to genuinely have fun each week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,612 ✭✭✭✭siblers

Feels like Giuseppe won by his earlier performances in the earlier episodes but I wouldn't begrudge him.

Jurgen really should have been in that final though, left a slightly sour taste on a very good series

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,812 ✭✭✭Addle

Thought it was the best series in a long time.

The quality was so, so good.

Delighted for Giuseppe. He’s a deserved winner. Seemed a real genuine guy too.

Realistically if they are choosing winners over the series then they should change the format to something like a points system where you have the best 8 or 10 bakers they can find and give them points for everything they do over a certain number of episodes. Would be by far the fairest way. The likes of Jurgen must be gutted watching that tonight - a class baker that had one bad week and he was out.

I didn't warm to Crystelle at all, the oh it's a family recipe and a tribute to this and that along with the constant shock when she did well grew extremely tiresome, delighted Giuseppe won it, a gent and was so consistent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,612 ✭✭✭✭siblers

He didn't even have a bad week which makes it worse

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,812 ✭✭✭Addle

Will buy Giuseppe and his dads book. 🇮🇹

In the final it always seems that everyone has some sort of hiccup, but unfortunately for Crystelle the raw focaccia was just a bit too big of an issue to overcome. After that, I found it hard to call between Giuseppe and Chiggs and wouldn't have minded who won, but I'm delighted for Giuseppe, he just seems like a really nice guy that you'd want to be friends with. If it was based on the whole series you'd have to say that the winner would have to come from either him or Jurgen.

Me too. I really enjoyed it this year. All the contestants were so lovely and were so supportive of each other. So many times they helped when someone was running out of time or stuck.

  • Registered Users Posts: 232 ✭✭Navy blue

i don’t agree that Chigs had a much better week than Giuseppe. His signature was worse - far too much carrot and was soggy and his technical was only better by a small margin. So it came down to the showstopper which I would say they were pretty even on. I would say Crystelle had it in the bag until the focaccia disaster. Whatever about Giuseppe leaving something in the oven a couple of minutes too long, that focaccia was not recognisable as any sort of baking!

I think overall the result was fair and he was definitely the stronger baker of the three over the series.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

I think all the finalists will do well for themselves out of the show, they all seem genuine and Crystelle and Chigs looked properly happy for Giuseppe which is nice to see

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,556 ✭✭✭✭DvB

Best series of bake off since the change over to C4 IMO. The whole series flew for me and other than Jurgen missing from the final there wasn't much wrong with the judging either IMO. Delighted for Giuseppe who overall on last nights performance just about pinched it from chigs, but had Crystelle not served up raw dough soaked in olive oil would have surely won it outright... dem's the breaks though & raw anything is a red flag on this show as we all know. A great season though, enjoyed it immensely.

Thoroughly enjoyed this season and Giuseppe is a deserving winner. Definitely the most consistent throughout.

I had called Chigs and Crystelle being in the final about 5 weeks out. Giuseppe and Jurgen were the best by far until then but I had a gut feeling one of them would have a bad week. How Jurgen was eliminated was kinda crap though.

I had Chigs winning before watching as he seemed like a complete dark horse and extremely talented, but can't fault the decision in the end.

I finally figured out how Chigs got so good so quickly last night when watching his knife skills - he's clearly someone who was already an excellent cook before he took up baking and the skills transferred across.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,071 ✭✭✭boccy23

I was genuinely shocked when they called out Giuseppe's name last night. Clearly the decision came down to the complete series for me as I felt Chigs did better last night. I have no issues with the winner, just really surprised.

My wife thought the same last night. I was asking how could be so good! She said maybe he really likes cooking and baking just came natural

  • Registered Users Posts: 67 ✭✭Fatnacho

Trying to work out whether Crystelle knew the focaccia was raw and hoped they would accidentally not notice it or if it was a genuine mistake. Think she would’ve been better binning the focaccia and saying she ran out of time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,471 ✭✭✭Sunny Dayz

Really enjoyed this series, thought the contestants were lovely. Could not have called a winner in advance of the final, which is great, it's just a pity Jurgen wasn't in the final.

I thought Guiseppe let the pressure get to him a bit in the final, he seemed to panic when he made mistakes like the oven heating up and I thought he was going to snap at Noel/Matt when they were going around to them.

Crystelle - I can't understand how she served up that Foccattia (sp). She surely must have known that it didn't come out right? That lost the final for her. Had she baked foccattia before?

Chigs - I'm not convinced he's completely new to baking... He seems to have a very good understanding of how baking works, things like different doughs, pastries, creams etc. In the technical challenges which are designed to test how well you understand how baking works and going by instinct and experience as opposed to blindly following a recipe - he did well in them. But I do think he is a good baker and he should consider training in it if that how good he is from learning from youtube videos on his lay off from work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,812 ✭✭✭Addle

Ya, strange that there was no reaction to that by her. Surely she could tell that it wasn’t right?

Maybe it was just edited out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 498 ✭✭Pistachio19

Exactly - when she won the technical last night (at least I think she did) I thought I'd put my fist through the tv. Her faux shock and huffing and puffing throughout really annoyed me. So glad Giuseppe won, though I thought Chigs might have beaten him to it based on last night alone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,182 ✭✭✭✭sammyjo90

Sure they made focaccia this year didnt they? There was zero excuse for it

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 27,277 CMod ✭✭✭✭spurious

She must have said at least four times 'There's a lot of olive oil in it'.

Drowned in it so much it could not bake, it seems.

I wouldn't have had an issue with any of the final three, or Jurgen, winning it, but I think Giuseppe was very consistent, week in week out.

I think Crystelle was criticised in that task for hers being too dry, and she said she'd been told there should be lots of oil - so she overcompensated just a bit!!

I too think there's something suss about the technicals, particularly this last one - a page with two lines on it, basically saying nothing, but yet they all knew basically what to do, even Chigs who was a "novice". Hmmmmm!

Now, I get there's editing, and lining us up for some jeopardy, but that was just a stretch too far for me.

I also thought Giuseppe waaaay over-reacted to the oven not being on (5 mins in a 4.5 hour bake wasn't going to be that fatal), I'd say he was wound up to 90 with the stress of it all, and was sure he was going to clock Noel if he kept wittering on at him (he was way overdoing that all this series, must have been seriously distracting and annoying for all the contestants).

Giuseppe on Ray Darcy show presently.

Would anyone be surprised of Noel wasn't there for the next series? I sometimes got the feeling that he wasn;t exactly enjoying the whole experience, can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe himself anf Matt were just being a bit too much for the contestants, they did seem to annloy them at times!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,471 ✭✭✭Sunny Dayz

I thought Guiseppe was really annoyed by Noel in last night's episode. He was over at him when he was frsutrated about the oven. And annoying him again when he was watching his danish buns which ended up getting over baked.

I do think the whole panel on Bake Off could be overhauled. I'm so over Paul Hollywood - he very much believes his own hype, thinks he knows it all and what he says goes. Prue doesn't add too much to it, if Paul wasn't the other judge I think she would come into her own a bit more. Matt I find quite annoying, I think he means well though. Noel I wasn't sure about him at first when he started with bake off but he grew on me. I agree he's not himself this season but I'd imagine that's down to the bake off crew and contestants isolating in a bubble for filming and him possibly not being able to see his family.

Just watched the extra slice. seeing a review of Guiseppe's bakes, he really was exceptional and deserving of being the winner.

I always feel sorry for the bakers who leave in week 1 or 2. They're obviously very good bakers to have gotten thu the auditions to participate in the tent, but might just not be suited to the competition side of things.

I always wonder if there wasn't the pressure of having TV cameras watching every move, and no actual time restrictions would they be just as good a home baker as some of the others? No time constraints, no Noel or Mat winding them up, no Paul or Pru watching over their shoulders.

People under pressure act differently and might do a lot better doing the same bake at home in the kitchen.

I said the same a couple of years ago. I think they should all go through the whole 10 weeks and get points as they go along. Freya really missed out on what could have been a good week for her.

Watched 2 episodes of this on All 4. Some seriously good bakers on it plus one of the judges is a Prue doppelgänger 😱

Tonight's was the Derry Girls cast, and they just make me laugh, they're brilliant!!

Their heads must have been absolutely wrecked with all the Christmas lights, Christmas tree, decorations, constant references to "first XX of 2022", first winner of the year...... and all the while, the sun was splitting the stones outside, and John was baking in shorts and t-shirt!

    Serious sensory discombobulation!

Is this Kim Joys second time to do Christmas/NY special?

I watched this last year and was surprised that I actually enjoyed Harry Hill on it. Usually can't stand him but he was great with the kids and actually made me laugh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,357 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Loving junior bake off this year. Lovely group of kids, they all help each other out as well.

Harry Hill is a really good fit as a presenter.

Interesting having Paul Hollywood for some of the episodes, he was just a tad kinder :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,159 ✭✭✭✭iamwhoiam

I love it too . Just read that Eliza is Natalie Cassidys daughter ( Sonia in Eastenders )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,357 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

No way! She seemed lovely, very unlucky to not make finals week.

One small thing that does bother me a tad is the upper and lower age range. It doesn't seem fair to have an 8 year old competing against a 15 year old.

I am a fan of quique though and he is only 9!
