Here's to a fun, hassle-free and completely uncontroversial tournament... 😬

I think Zverev has a great chance here, Medvedev isn’t used to being the favourite and it will be interesting to see how he copes with it. I can’t ignore the assault allegations when it comes to Zverev though so hope someone else wins. I don’t think Nadal’s body is up to the rigours of two weeks and best of five anymore.

Badosa looking good on the women’s side but she had a few long matches in Sydney and the winners of the build up tournaments rarely win the slam itself. I don’t think it would be good for the game if Osaka won straight after taking a six month break but in the women’s game anything is possible.

I need some advice on choosing a different horse in this race.

Can't go for Nadal (total GSs), can't go for Medvedev, try to fend him off the #1 spot for as long as possible.

    I'm thinking I'll support Zverev.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,906 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

Zverev and Medvedev favourites to make the final now, but, both have suffered more than their fair share of shock defeat in slams before, although they have definitely been more consistent over the last year to 18 months. Winning the USO should stand to Medvedev and think he is deserving favourite. I think quarter finals or semi finals at a push is the limit for Nadal.

It's anybody's guess on the women's side, think Raducanu will make a first round exit and Barty will again fail at her home slam.

First match up on RLA is Maria vs Sakkari. In the 2018 Aus. Open, it was Maria vs Sharapova in the first round, Someone is trolling us ...

BOTH Medvedev AND Zverev can overtake him with the AO win as Zverev is not defending many points so can gain a lot

I'm supporting Alcaraz. He's not going to win but like his tennis

Doesn't seem to have played since the Next-Gen Finals so no idea what he's in form. Hopefully his serve is better.

Also supporting Karatsev. He's just a solid player - not overly flashy but accurate.

Cressy is interesting to look at as he's a real-old school serve-volleyer - literally every point. He won't go far but a nice novelty

Did get to the 250 final vs Nadal

French-born, did full college system in the US, now represents the US

    Big improvement this last year

Big win for Wang over Gauff, Wang hadn’t played since the Olympics but having previously beaten Serena here she does have pedigree. Interestingly her coach Pat Cash is a vocal opponent of the Covid vaccinations but yet there is very little coverage of his stance.

Keyes won a tight two setter against Kenin, Kenin now drops to 91 in the rankings, it’s been a tough two years for her since she won here. Appendicitis, Covid, dropping her father as her coach and then reuniting with him, it’s been a bit of a mess.

Good win for Korda over Norrie.

I'd say Kennin is still wondering how she lost it. Only one break in it I think, and she played pretty well, moving Keys around the court. Keys was serving like a dream, though. Great placement and power.

Zverev under a bit of pressure here, but Altmaier just couldn't hold on to serve.

(I've think it's live, apologies if it's not and that's old news!)

Are all the matches being played indoors or under closed roofs? This one and the one I caught late last night sounded indoors....

And who's the Aussie commentating on the Zverev match? His voice sounds really familiar but I just cannot place it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 532 ✭✭✭tiegan

Zverev was indoors, but roof was open a good bit, it was pretty breezy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,051 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

    Stupid question time.

How the feck does the umpire get up into and down off their perch on whatever court Zverev/Altmaier were on?

I saw an umpire on another court, and there was the usual ladder down the front, but this one looked like a big pod perched atop a pillar!

That is interesting about Pat Cash and with him being Australian, can’t believe it hasn’t got more coverage. Pity he didn’t speak up for Djoc.

That was a thumping game between Osama and Osorio!

The Telegraph also has a piece saying John McEnroe said on Eurosport that he couldn’t believe what happened Djokovic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,698 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

This final set looked to be going Andy Murray’s way at 4-1 but basilashvilli has brought it back to 4-3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,698 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

5-4 Murray final set. I’m not sure why the crowd seem to be booing Murray or booing in general.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 532 ✭✭✭tiegan

And still booing him during interview - hard to believe, not sure I ever heard that before!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,698 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Yeah. Didn’t hear what was said fully but the interviewer did say that regardless of what was said they are happy to see him back.

Nice to see Murray getting through.

Dan Evans also through in straight sets

Heather Watson won her match in three sets. Emma radacanu is playing later today,

Now doing the same thing in the kyrgios match. Almost as annoying as vuvuzelas!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 532 ✭✭✭tiegan

Well you learn something new every day - thanks for that - Kyrgios playing up to the crowd on the siuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu - actually quite a humourous match!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,880 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

He is nothing if not an entertainer!

I didn't understand it myself tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,426 ✭✭✭✭josip

Nice to see Kyrgios getting a win at his home tournament. It would be great if he got to the 2nd week.

[Edit], just saw that he's got Medvedev next, so much for the 2nd week.

Raducanu - Stephens coming up. This match is entirely on Sloane's racquet and the result depends largely on what version of her shows up. She got married recently so not sure how much training she's actually been doing. Regardless, Raducanu will get destroyed on social media if she doesn't win 60 61 or something 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,051 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Well she's off to a very positive start anyway - 3-0 up, one break!

Anyone know what the umpire was telling her before the toss that she couldn't wear, and she was adamant she could?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,051 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Well, there's the 6-0 for starters!!

Stephens' head doesn't seem to be in it at all, she's getting destroyed so far.

I thought that what it must be - but why on earth would you not be allowed wear a watch???

Stephens just didn't seem interested in the match in the first set. She has now broken Raducanu at the start of the second, it will be interesting to see how Raducanu responds. She has had it easy so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,051 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Stephens is finally waking up here. Looking a lot more purposeful and positive in her play.

2 breaks in the 2nd set now. I feel a decider coming on.

    Looking good for Raducanu now.

I've just noticed it's almost midnight there. Can't be easy playing that late having waited all day!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,880 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Raducanu match was poor I thought but she is through.

    6-0, 2-6, 6-1

Might keep the British press off her back for a day or two!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,964 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

    Appalling match, littered with errors.

42 unforced errors by Stephens, 30 by Radacanu.

Probably 60 and 45 in reality as they seem to be very generous as whats regarded an an unforced error.

Apparently any kind of "smart tech" is verboten. It could be used for nefarious purposes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 646 ✭✭✭klr87

Almost as weird as the match yesterday between Dayana Yastremska and Madison Brengle. Brengle won 6-1 0-6 5-0 RET. Yastremska was up to her usual tricks, taking a long bathroom break after a short for set - well, as short as is allowed under the new rules, This discomfited Brengle so much that she lost the second set 6-0. Yastremska then retired at 0-5 rather than eat a bagel herself in the final set. She was injured, but she could surely have hung around for one more game. Brengle hit a grand total of 1 winner during the entire match, against 31 by Yastremska. Her reward for winning is a 2nd round match against Osaka, who seems to be getting her s**t together mentally.

Kvitova, Kerber and Fernandez all out today.

Decent win for Radacanu but Sloane was not dialled in at all. The level was pretty poor by both players but I feel slams really suit Radacanu because of the rest day in between matches. Her fitness and conditioning need a lot of work.

Sad to see Kvitova bow out to Cirstea who is a decent but limited player. Petra however was shocking, so many unforced errors and not by centimetres either.

Kerber beaten by Kanepi who seems to always pull out a big win at the slams and disappear for the rest of the year. However Angie is just after Covid so not really a shock as such.

Entertaining match between Broady and Kyrios, his match up with Medvedev will be worth watching especially to see how Medvedev reacts to the crowd against him and the sledging they carry on with.

Oof, didn't even know they were scheduled to meet in R2. Kyrgios leads the h2h 2-0 but both matches were played in 2019, and Medvedev is a much more accomplished player than then, so I'd be confident he can get the job done. As we know a rowdy crowd won't bother him at all, and if the match goes to four or five sets you'd have to imagine Kyrgios' lack of match play/general fitness will come back to bite him. On the other hand, it's only the second round so he'll still be feeling relatively fresh. Hoping Medvedev can send him packing though.

Sad end to the Tan/Svitolina match, Tan had made a great comeback to take the 2nd, despite 3 breaks.... you'd have to wonder what she might have been capable of without injury. Svitolina looked like she was shaping up again after the slump, but who knows!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,559 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Anisimova takes out Bencic in straight sets. That's a huge relief to Osaka who is 0-4 against Bencic, or 1-4 if you include a 25k ITF from 2013.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 168 ✭✭poppy37

Giorgi next for Barty, it depends what Camila turns up but on her day she can be unbeatable especially on hard courts.

Kudos to Brengle for making a match of it in the second set but Osaka still very comfortable. Anisimova playing well again which is good to see. The sudden death of her father followed by niggly injuries understandably saw her spiral down the rankings but hopefully things have turned around for her.

I’m finding the women’s draw more interesting at the moment but I see Kyrios/Medvedev is the night match on Rod Laver tomorrow so that should be a stock up on the popcorn watch for sure.

Alcaraz has a good chance of getting to the semi-finals if he can beat Berrettini and he has already done so last year in Vienna and is the favourite in the betting, if not a huge one.

He has put on some seriously impressive muscle in the months since he last played and has improved his serve.

Has improved his haircut also, thankfully for his sake, not that that took as much effort.

Blitzed his first and second round opponents.

Still only 18 and here at the AO he is the youngest men's grand slam seed in more than 30 years.

Sky is the limit for this guy.

Only concern would be that his all-out style could lead to injuries.

Quite different style of tennis compared to Nadal.

The only time Nadal went to the net at that age was at the end of a match.

Wow, Alcaraz is a tank. If he makes it big the endorsements will be flying in.

Not a good start for garbine muguruza who’s 0-3 and 0-30 down to Alize Cornet.
