" give up the kind of power they have "

Get a grip 😂 what does an elected official in a democracy gain from people wearing masks , certs , and restrictions on hospitality?

my biggest fear is that another variant of concern will emerge in about 4 weeks time.that will be that again for another year bar a slight reopening in july before autumn covid cases go up again in november and restrictions follow again for winnnter and xmas

Italy had mandatory vaccinations before SARS-COV2 existed (paper is about when they increased it from 4 to 10 in 2017):

The law on compulsory vaccination in Italy: an update 2 years after the introduction (nih.gov)

Vaccinations for travelling have also been around for a long time.

Hi astrofool. I was talking about a post a poster put up stating the unvaccinated wouldn’t be allowed to vote in the upcoming presidential elections in Italy. It seems unvaccinated elected officials won’t be allowed to vote…

All that says is that to enter into the parliament you need to have a valid green pass, doesn't say you have to be vaccinated.

Spanish flu arrived in Feb 1918 and ended in April 1920 as a mild endemic virus.

It makes them feel good. They think they’re governing. They think they’re being courageous, making hard calls. They are of course total cowards.

If I had such control I certainly wouldn't introduce and maintain restrictions id myself have have abide by. Restrictions on entertainment and hospitality or mask wearing for no reason other than "control" as they'd have a negative impact on me and my life. I'm sure the govt are loving having nowhere to socialise and enjoy life, wearing masks ...but it's OK cause they have the magic "control". The UK government must not love the taste of control.

Maybe you're just projecting perhaps ? Most people don't think that way or have such desires.

Only on the restrictions thread would talk of easing restrictions be greeted with more doom and gloom...

That's correct, however in italy you can obtain a covid cert only if you recovered or if you are fully vaccinated. With the recent legislation you can use a negative test only to do basic stuff (over 50 can't use that to go to work anymore)

An omicron variant (that is to say a new variant based on the omicron one) would be less severe anyway with so many people having caught omicron

That's a planning for the worst commentary and it is assumed that it will be back again in some form. The comment about vaccines sounds more like a flu jab programme but we won't be doing it again with this batch of vaccines.

The 1918 pandemic ended when a far more transmissible, but less pathogenic variant emerged that swept its way across the world. This was after 3-4 waves of severe illness. See a pattern?

Mother nature has a way of sorting these things out. The virus is here to stay, but as an endemic cold-like coronavirus. Let's not forget that several other cold-causing viruses are already coronaviruses some of us will already have been exposed to. This is just yet another coronavirus to add to the blend.

As for the fears of massive death over winter, I never understood the logic. Omicron and influenza target the same vulnerable people - the elderly, those at end-of-life, and those with significant underlying health conditions and immunosuppression. Given that you can't die twice and the population of these people remains more or less the same, we shouldn't be surprised when Varadkar called this past winter "just like another flu season" in hospitals.

The same will apply later this year; it won't be flu + this coronavirus contributing to double deaths; it will be the same population of vulnerable people targeted by one or other virus. In the meantime, boost hospital beds and critical care staff, as much as possible, to absolutely guarantee that no such dopey lockdowns take place later this year. Boost the hell out of those vulnerable people, too. That should be sufficient.

What I absolutely don't want is a recrudescence of the NPHET organism later this year, with Holohan back on his high horse about how hospitals will struggle - when this was considered completely normal before COVID-19 ever emerged. We cannot allow ourselves to get into a very bad habit of locking down to some degree just because hospital capacity is strained. The cure to that is to increase hospital capacity, not to restrict society. Holohan would be far better equipped telling our so-called leaders that, rather than banging on about what has become nothing more than a common cold-like variant.

Israel ? Who is going to come up with the « This shows that the vaccines are working. » on this one...

That might mean something if you didn't say it every year.

There is one thing as sure as sugar. Even long after NPHET are gone. Tony Holohan and Paul Reid will be calling for restrictions every winter. Reid especially. He has to appear to the HSE staff/middle management that he is trying to do something.

Whoever the Taoiseach is will bring in some sort of non binding Restriction, again to appear like they are doing something.

Hi, this is over simplifying, based on the topic of the thread, however, the government, currently have emergency legislation that can and have removed our basic human rights..as dramatic as that sounds, it is fact, we understand as a nation, this was required for an emergency situation , a pandemic of a size that none of us have never lived through before and a government and health system that never had to navigate before.

However, the power they have, was against allot of our basic rights as set out in our constitution as a democracy.. any changes in said constitution, is to be voted by the people, this was not done.. this emergency legislation can restrict our movements, can remove us from our home, can limit people we have in our home, can shut down whole sections of society, can cocoon people inside their homes, has made it illegal for large groups to gather, therefore protests of any kind, were illegal.. now no-one here think MM is sitting at home looking at people in masks, and rubbing his hands in glee, thinking they have 'controlled us' .but with the political unhappiness and lack of opposition here, its a very dangerous place to be, people could vote in a complete nutjob in the next election and that nutjob could abuse the 'emergency powers' even as simply not allow a peaceful protest to happen.

We also know that these powers, while initially were needed, now are not so much, and we are saving the HSE and all it obvious failings, call me negative.. but wouldn't restrictions, effectively save more lives every year in general?? It would actually benefit the HSE if we werent all drunk in mass numbers every Christmas, hell it would probably benefit alot in society...but it is WRONG to do that and it is ILLEGAL in our constitution , so they have not done it before, but now they can.. I dont want periods of freedom- thats insane to think that could or would be ok.

Just take one look at the laws being implemented across Europe, in what I always thought was a progressive, open and democratic body.. power tends to breed corruption, its human nature..

This for alot of people is more that just masks, or early closing in a pub... there has been a precedent set here... and the fact that people are ok with that, its worrying in itself..

If you keep saying it, it will definitely happen.

Varadkar thinks he can end the emergency legislation (effectively ending legal requirements for any restrictions) on the 31st of March

So the real question is, will they call the variant to be discovered at the start of March Pi or Rho? My money is on Rho so they don't confuse it with the English word for the food stuff "pie"

My prediction is that Rho will have about 40,000 infections, 50 ICU cases and about 1,000 hospital cases, 60% of which will be asymptomatic people with broken arms. Despite the effects Tony will throw the baby out with the bathwater again

    You read it here first
