Idah starts against Watford. Won't be a better time to press home his advantage and nail down a starting spot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,359 ✭✭✭henke

Live on Sky too so good opportunity to get to see how he goes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,041 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Poor auld Idah barely getting a touch - it's been all Watford. 72% possession!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,797 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

1-0 up with 1 shot on goal. Dean Smith is turning out to be a lucky manager!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,359 ✭✭✭henke

Idah does well to get the ball back into the danger area and forces the OG.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,424 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

Idah assist and should of least had a 1 on 1 only for awful pass. Held up ball well a few times and never gave it away.

    Solid

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Jonjoe Kenny started for Everton today. Doing well so far. Looks solid. More of a right back than wing back id have said.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,797 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Coventry straight into the starting lineup for MK Dons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭Raoul

The Norwich fans seem to really like Idah. It's amazing what 3/4 games can do to a player. Hopefully he can keep this up for a good stretch.

A start and assist for Scales.

Conor Sammon incidentally just scored for Alloa as well. Didn't even realise he was still going!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Didn't have a good game going by comments on their fan forum. Benefit of the doubt for a lad lacking match sharpness, but he's got a lot of work to do to win over the MK Dons fans given the players they've lost this month.

And speaking of MK Dons, Dan McDonnell saying Devoy might not be going anywhere for now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,797 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

I was watching. He did ok, worked hard, kept the ball moving in midfield, didn't make any mistakes defensively, unfortunately his final ball to the front players was poor at times. Dons fans disappointed because he had the freedom of the midfield all day but made nothing happen. Very typical of the performances he's putting in at u21 level for us really. The more I see of Coventry, the more I feel that he's just a bit short of the standard required to be a factor for us.

It'd be a real shame if Devoy decides to pass on the MK Dons opportunity. For a player who likes to get on the ball and make things happen, there are few better realistic options open to him than Dons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

How did Parrott do? Has come in for criticism by some fans while others feel the criticism is a bit harsh and played alright for someone asked to play on the wing.

Yeah not sure what to make of Coventry. He does the simple tells well and keeps play ticking along nicely. It looked more impressive with the previous U21s because he was surrounded by quality players but this campaign it has showed how average he can be.

Yeah Bohs fans will be very happy if he decides to stay but would disappointed if he turned down a move. He's not gonna find too many teams in England that will play to his strengths at that level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,797 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Parrott was decent, played mostly wide left but drifted in centrally as well. He created two decent chances, and had one decent chance of his own that he probably should have connected better with (see below video). He clearly has ability and doesn't look out of place in a ball playing MK Dons team. Only thing I would like to see is for him to be a bit more ruthless in front of goal. Seen it today and in the past as well, some of his shots can be a bit tame. He's definitely looking better than he did with Ipswich last season, the hope is that he can improve again a bit further, which I don't think is out of the question.

I had not realised but Getafe B are streaming their games on Youtube live, you can also view their previous games there as well.

Finn got a start today but unfortunately had a poor game and struggled to have an influence in central midfield, playing in a number 8 sort of role. He had a great chance early doors after receiving a pass cut inside from the by line, but unfortunately his shot was poor. He was involved in a mix-up in midfield that led to Getafe losing the ball in a bad area where the opposition took advantage to score. He was subbed at half time.

The lads never really pushed on much for someone that was Getafes youngest debutant a month after his 17th birthday and being around the the first team squad last season. Still only 18 and be interesting to see if the interest from Germany is real or he stays in Spain at the end of the season. His younger brother Brandon Finn Benoa was in playing with our U15s before the Christmas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Ryan Manning scored a belter yesterday. If Kenny is talking about developing depth within the squad in March and is serious about it then Manning should really be getting a proper run out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Could be the best thing for him if he found somewhere new in the summer. @Francie Barrett I'm sure has said it more than once that his style of play seems better suited to a different league than Spain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Ebosele attracting plenty of attention. Has turned down a 500k move to Nottingham Forest and has interest from clubs in the Premier League and Serie A with him out of contract in the summer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Good to see him back in action. Played the opening 45 mins.

Not surprising at all. Only just turned 19 but has this ridiculous raw pace and power that few other players have.

If a very similar player like Adama traore is a £25m player, then someone like Ebosele is easily worth £1-2m.

Connolly starting for Boro tonight against Blackburn. Match is live on Sky Sports.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,797 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Only impact Connolly has had so far is on Lenihan's face, he's left it a bloody mess with a stray arm. Was on a yellow and could easily have gotten a red for that.

Seems to have gotten a couple of chances later on.

Liked the BBC commentary on Lenihan

Darragh Lenihan and Aaron Connolly compete for a looping ball and the Blackburn skipper stays down afterward.

The Rovers skipper tries to get his bearings but his face is strewn with blood from a whack on the schnozz.

He's got those foam tubes in the nostril and will carry on. Connolly might do well to stay away from him for a bit.

He's a tough lad is Republic of Ireland defender Lenihan. He doesn't stay down for nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,797 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Second half was a bit better for Connolly. He had two minor chances which he seemed to snatch at. Perhaps he's a bit low on confidence.

Will be interesting to see if he starts the next game. The loanee from Arsenal who came on second half had will have made a case to start ahead of Connolly.

Lenihan was immense I have to say.

Lee O'Connor signs for Tranmere on a permanent deal. Looks to be doing well there at the moment playing central midfield, they seem to be on a nice run and are second in the table.

Hendrick to link-up with Connolly at Middlesbrough?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

It's a good move for him as he looks well settled there now in his second season. Interesting to see where Crawford plays O'Connor in March seeing as he's playing in midfield now and Ebosele getting regular game time too.

Best thing Ebosele can do is probably keep the head down and tip away doing what he's doing with Derby and make his decision in the summer.

Same clubs that are interested now will still be interested in the summer and might have a few more clubs interested if he performs well.

Boro fans not too pleased with the links with Hendrick. Can see him getting worse abuse than Doherty gets from the Spurs fans.

One midfielder who could possibly do with a loan to push for a place in the senior squad is Kilkenny. Has only played once in their last seven games, which happens to see them on their worst run of form all season too and they are linked with Joe Rothwell from Blackburn.

He's in the last six months of his contract and they've had a £2m bid turned down for him. They're also in for a couple of wingers too which might see Christie moved more centrally too.

Abankwah is highly rated and can play both RB and CB.

Forgot that Watford are owned by the same family that owns Udinese. Surprised he was brought to Watford rather than Udinese as he wouldn't need a visa for the UK.

Though it's great to see lads going further afield than the UK and might lead to others signing for clubs on the continent. That's himself and Zefi that have signed for teams in Italy in the last 12 months and you had a couple of others going on trials with teams in Europe.

First of March's friendlies announced. Can now add Lithuania who play March 29th.

We just have to be careful that we don't lose lads like Zefi or Abankwah.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Both are born and bred here and can't really see them play for Albania or possibly Kosovo, and Ghana unless they don't make it with us.

Because two third generation English born players were suddenly good enough for one of the top teams in the world?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,041 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Yeah, that's the big difference alright. There's just no comparing the Zefi and Abankwah situations really... Rice and Graelish were English kids, born and raised in England, living and working in England. If anything the strange thing in those cases was them ever playing for us in the first place - really we got them because we offered them youth international experience where England didn't.

Zefi and Abankwah on the other hand are Irish kids born and raised in Ireland, so a lot less to be worried about as long as they're kept in the international fold I'd say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

We were willing to move Grealish up the age groups faster than England where he would have had to work his way up the ranks so he threw his hat in with us instead and don't think Rice was selected by England so he came on board with us.

And as you said as long as the lads are in the Irish set up they won't feel the need to go somewhere to play games. We'll end up losing a few guys in years to come because of the number of dual, or tri nationals and not having the room to accommodate some. Just look at the talent there is in defence, some young lad might feel his chances somewhere else are better like Peter Kioso possibly.

I wouldn't be so sure about Zefi when you look at how effective the Albania FA is in getting the diaspora on board. Especially since he has now moved to Italy which has a huge diaspora of around 800,000.

Have a look at how they managed to convince the likes of Broja to get on board with them despite him have lived all his life in England.

Ghana as well are a very clear concern. They going to start rebuilding and will be looking to recruit as many players as possible. They have no problems calling up a goalkeeper who starts in EFL League One for example.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,041 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Tbh I think just watching Zefi speak for two minutes tells you just how Irish he is. Like, he's the most Irish kid you've ever heard! Given that (unlike Broja) he's already firmly involved in the Irish underage setup and (also unlike Broja) there's a very achievable route through to the senior team for him if he keeps developing, I'm not terribly worried. In Broja's case, you have to wonder if he'd be playing for Albania if England had actually shown any interest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,330 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Surprised to see Jamie McGrath play tonight

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Probably not moving until the summer and St Mirren aren't great this season so would be foolish to not play him. See Connor Ronan has scored a beaut of goal going by reports.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Yeah Broja wasn't in England's plans at underage and Albania had him training with the seniors at 17 and then capped him at 18 just after he went to Holland on loan. Only showing decent form this season that England would have him in their U21s.

Abankwah could play with Ghana in time if he feels he's not good enough to make it with Ireland, and chances are that could happen with O'Shea, Collins, and Omobamidele doing well so far and you've Dunne and McGuinness also there plus Festy and McNamara as RBs. But he's not walking away if he's good enough to play for us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,041 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Poor auld Obafemi, just scored what would have been a last minute winner, but was ruled a hair offside. Sharp movement and finish for it still though.

Stranger things have happened. We have plenty of players who have played for us over the country of their birth. It might not happen but we need to be prepared if the Albanian and Ghanian FAs start asking questions. Mad stuff that some posters here bring Rice and Grealish into the debate. Its not like Zefi or the other lad would be throwing their lot in with significantly inferior teams FFS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Haha. Wow the sheer arrogance of some of the comments. Amankwah and Zeffi might only play for Albania or Ghana if they arent good enough for us. If their not good enough for is they might not be good enough for them either.

  • Registered Users Posts: 247 ✭✭Perseverance The Second

Accents don't necessarily mean that much.

Otherwise a player like Kilbane would have never donned the Green.

The parents cultural outlook matters far more in terms of allegiances and i would be willing to bet he is being heavily influenced by a much larger Albanian diaspora out in Italy. At the same time your Broja point also serves to show that Albania offers very clear pathways when you look at players such as Ramen Cepele who they capped whilst they were playing for underage teams in Inter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,797 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

I see Hogan got his 9th of the season, he's really making a case for a call-up.

I gave MK Dons another try tonight. Coventry showed some good improvement tonight, cut out a lot of the mistakes he made on his debut when playing the ball forward, controlled the game from midfield. Great to see.

Parrott did well, had perhaps the best chance of the match but denied by the keeper and then the bar. He gets on the ball, makes things happen and links up well, but the final product isn't quite there. He needs to be more ruthless when he gets these chances. I am starting to get McGoldrick-type vibes off him. McGoldrick was a top player in terms of ability, but with questionable finishing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Played a deeper midfield role this evening alongside Alan Power with St Mirren playing a 4-2-3-1 formation.
