Wondering where this thread was. There's one in the television forum for a few days but none here.
Really looking forward to this and I hope to the creator it's not blood and ashes.

Burn me, they better go easy on Light-forsaken braids being tugged and blasted sniffs being sniffed.

Don't worry; every time there's a male on screen we'll hear some wisdom about women and about wishing "insert person not on screen" being there as they are so good at handling them. I mean at least the braid tugging can be done while talking by comparison...

Can't help but feel this would work better in animated form. WoT is much more flashy in its magic usage than GoT, for example. I'm not sure they will or budget exists to do it justice.

Shooting to begin in September of this year.

Let's just hope a decent scriptwriting team are brought in to right Jordan's mistakes. I still can't believe I finished the series!

About 3 or 4 books somewhere between 6-10 can be covered in one or two episodes probably.

Perhaps they will have an episode special that just consists of braid tugging, then another one about the Matt, Rand and Perrin in turn saying how they don't understand women as well as the other 2 do. So much potential for great craic there.

I can help with the screenwriting for book 10, it can be the 5-10 minute cold open scene before starting credits:
"Egwene moves army to Tar Valon, gets captured"

With those 7 words you can finish book 9 and start book 11 quite comfortably having missed nothing.

I'm tentative but I would be inclined to trust Amazon with these things. They have a monster budget and IMO rarely half arse anything. The show has amazing potential if executed properly.

Rosamund Pike cast as Morraine. Good choice for me, as she's a good actress.

Total irony if this ends up being better than GOT.

Why? It's already a better book series by virtue of being finished, and I think the WoT ending is so epic it couldn't possibly be screwed up when televised

    Debatable, so that's a good point :)
and I think the WoT ending is so epic it couldn't possibly be screwed up when televised

Hmmmm. Here I disagree. I think they royally screwed up the ending of WOT... cue rant:
I thought that Mat would have more surprises to bring to bear in the battle, particularly towards the end - I was hoping for yet another trick up the sleeve that didn't turn up. Mat didn't seem to have quite the same level of strategy and battle knowledge he showed in other books - although, quite annoyingly, his fellow characters seemed to mention his tactical brilliance with every second breath.

I wasn't mad about the Compulsion used on the great generals - surely they would be protected given that Tel'aran'rhiod is busier than a train station these days, and that we know about dream protection since Moiraine mentioned it all the way back when we started in book #1.

It sounds like they had a lot of folks calling in sick when it actually came to Tarmon Gai'don. Where were the 2000-4000 Aiel channellers, the 1000+ Aes Sedai, the 1000+ Kin, and the thousands of Wind Finders? I expected massive circles of channellers wielding sa'angreal capable of killing the anticipated millions of Trollocs. Two hundred or more Black Ajah and a thousand Asha'man, many turned.

The impression I got was of 20-30 Aes Sedai facing the enemy alongside Egwene. The location of thousands, if not tens of thousands of channellers is not something that we should be wondering about. What about the Green - the "Battle Ajah"? They escape mention at the Fields of Merrilor - were they off drinking tea and discussing braid tugging techniques because someone forgot to invite them to the Last Battle? I don't think so.

We had loads of awesome uses of the power in Dumai's Wells - dome, exploding ground, headsplosions, etc - and at the manor house - death gates and all that. Where were these in the Last Battle?

We know that only a 'remnant of a remnant' of the Aiel will survive, surely that means that several hundred thousand of them die in the Last Battle. Yet we get the impression of hundreds, perhaps in the low thousands, of Aiel moving around and fighting during the battle. Do they even get orders from Mat? I don't think so - please correct me if I'm missing something.

Aside: I didn't like how the Aviendha's visions of the Aiel future seemed to be just written off. It felt like an editorial decision where either resolving this storyline would take too many pages -and requiring another book - or simply that the writing team felt that the deus ex machina resolution would satisfy readers.

Logain, Morgase and Padan Fain were massively built up in early books as important characters with important roles. Logain was utterly disappointing to the point of arguably proving Min's visions incorrect - which they should never be. The Morgase and Fain cameos were slightly better in that the didn't deserve more than a couple of lines. Many other cameo appearances felt like just that - name drops rather than real important roles.

Surely we could have got some preview of Shara's importance and role, rather than simply dropping them in for what seems like plot convenience. Jain Farstrider or Forsaken scenes could have given some more hints in earlier books.

Speaking of plot convenience, the "plot armor" was particularly strong for major characters in the Last Battle - far more of them should have died. For the sake of anyone reading this accidentally, I won't mention names, but I felt they got off particularly lightly. And as for poor Bela - cruel, guys, cruel!

We now know how Rand survives, taking over another body. This was a decision made by Jordan years ago but despite the hints that the two were connected, it does seem just a little bit too easy.

I agree with those who compare it to a Gemmell-style rushed ending - the battle is still going and you're wondering how the book could possible end in a couple more pages. I think Jordan's prescribed epilogue is a strong factor in this - if Sanderson had some leeway to add to the epilogue I think that would have significantly helped.

(That's off my Goodreads review, just copied here).

So, IMO, it would be twice as funny if WOT ended better than GOT, given how the source material (that was available) was so much better for the latter. Of course, they need to keep Dumb & Dumber far away from this one.

Happy enough with them. Hopefully they are decent actors

Can't say I know any of those actors. Curious to see the reaction to having the characters be from a different background than depicted in the books.

*Sigh* As it's the internet likely "Autistic screeching"....

But yeah I look forward to it, Nynaeve's actress is certainly beautiful :)

People keep saying that but the two rivers ones were definitely described as being dark colouring a lot. Albeit possibly hair and eyes only, but moiraine did say rand was fairer skinned
The guy for mat looks pure mat

Yeah if memory serves is not the town they are from not one of the more southerly areas on the map... though it's years since read them. I suppose if juxtapose a European style mapping on it anything coming out of the blight or Lans home country should be Nordic blonde haired and blue eyed XD

From an article I read recently, Jordan had Liam Neeson as who he envisioned as playing him.

This is one series that I hope doesn't follow the books. A heavily condensed version of the books especially the later once would improve it immensely.

How dare you? I insist on every braid tug, "humpfh men", "insert missing two out of three of the trio" should be here as they understand women sighs "third person of trio", "mandatory everything has a fish reference because I'm from a fishing village", Ji-eh-toh etc. The catch lines alone should easily fill a season's worth of time...

I'll find it a bit jarring that what I had assumed were white characters aren't.

The Emonds Fielder's seen the Sea Folk as exotic due partly due to their skin colour. Are they going to be green now?

First they came for the socialists...

i think people are assuming they're white because they seem british and generic fantasy.
they're from a backwater village, they probably think everyone is exotic

Clear afternoon light through the glassed casements in tall windows along the walls mingled with the colored light through the great windows set in the ceiling, where the White Lion of Andor alternated with scenes of Andoran victories and the faces of the land’s earliest queens, beginning with Ishara herself, as dark as any of the Atha’an Miere, as full of authority as any Aes Sedai. No ruler of Andor could forget herself with the predecessors who had forged this nation staring down at her.

    Point taken.

Rand though got a hard time due to having grey eyes. The rest are described in the wiki as having dark eyes. Can we assume Rand is white? And the only attribute that sets him apart is his grey eyes? Also his father would be the same as the rest of the village, Kiri his wife was an outlander so Rand would have been mixed race. Maybe, maybe Kiri was also dark skinned.
I know Rand was a simple villager but surely Tam's not my father wouldn't have been a shocker to him if Tam's black and he's white!

P.S. I realise it's silly to consider these things in a world with Ogier and Trollocs!

First they came for the socialists...

yeah it's a fair point and i don't know. maybe they'll tan him up a little bit to look like mat here

If goes on Amazon I'll never see it. I can't be bothered jumping through hoops to see UK content in Ireland.

Any Amazon produced TV show is on the Irish version. That would apply to this too.

    Well what did we think?

As someone who initially liked these books and then hated them. Path of Daggers is a publishing crime. I quite liked it... Granted my dislike for the series probably means people who liked the series did not enjoy it.

I have no knowledge of the books. I was about to start them years ago but then when I heard how the series began to spiral, I didn't bother.

So I have no dog in the fight. I thought it was reasonably enjoyable. Was fun to see quite traditional Fantasy on TV. I doubt it would pull in any Game of Thrones fans: ("Where is all the TnA? Where are the grim grim GRIM storylines and characters?"). The magical elements were a bit army-wavey and I believe that would put many more casual viewers off (Those who's introduction to Fantasy would be limited to Lord of The Ring movies and GoT series (As opposed to ASoIaF books)).

But I did find it quite enjoyable if not quite "Must see TV". I enjoyed the relationship between the Aes Sedai and their Wardens and thought that was well portrayed in the fight sequences (Basically giving them room to work). But, again, this is as a NON-reader. This interpretation may be sacrilege to devoted readers, I don't know. It will be interesting to see how well it did. Obviously LoTR is coming with a HUGE budget and huge fanbase, casual and more hardcore. But Amazon also bought a LOT more that wouldn't quite have the brand recognition that these have: The Magician, specifically. Can't exactly fill that with TnA and hardcore violence without offending EVERYONE :)

    I think it's on a knife-edge at the moment.

It wasn't a bad first season, good casting and acting. They had a few difficulties to deal with, both with shooting (COVID) and the plot (dealing with Mat's actor leaving).

There were some writing choices I didn't appreciate, like Perrin's backstory, and irritations like the whole "don't touch anything" in the Blight as she leans against a tree. Very much lacking attention to detail, even given adaption to the small screen. And WOT as a series is full of detail, that's what made it so good.

Ultimately I think they're going to screw it up. They've already shown that they're not going to fund it properly as the first season really could have done with at least 2-3 more episodes so they didn't have to cram the exposition in. I think they'll underfund season 2 and the audience will peter out. I very much hope to be wrong, as the books deserve a great TV series.

It had GoT season 6 level funding per episode; their failure to use that funding in relevant ways is fully on the producer and the production team who could easily have made that stretch to further episodes if needed (GoT was $6 million at season 1; WoT was at $10 million season 1).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,414 ✭✭✭✭Trojan

Really, that makes it worse. That's a serious budget to have, I thought they could have made some different decisions in that case.

I guess we'll see what happens with S2.

    It's still the Egwene show.

I stopped watching after the first season though, the finale (written by the showrunner) was dire.

The lowest rated episode of the second season is also the finale ... again written by the showrunner.

He's not the person to do an adaptation of the Wheel of Time, if this qualifies as one - personally it's just his fanfiction with the same names and places involved - sometimes.

Real pity as it's likely the only adaptation I'll get to see in my lifetime. And unfortunately it's ****.

Season 2 was much better in my opinion.

I won't give anything away, but some really good (and bad) bits, more good than bad.

bang average story getting a worthy tv show. Moraine and Perrin the only half decent storylines.
