Not just talking about his accent, I'm talking about what he actually says, how utterly effusive he is about playing for Ireland, how delighted he was to get his first call up, how proud his Dad was of his call up, how much he's loved everything about the experience with the national team etc... like, just listening to him talk about Ireland (even saying one of the goals would be to be Ireland captain one day), along with him already being firmly in the system, and having all his friends and family in Ireland, he just demonstrably considers himself firmly Irish. So in this particular case, it seems one to worry a lot less about than others. (Would say Ferizaj has a bigger chance of potentially switching over for instance).

Like, maybe your hypotheticals will turn out true, and the Albanian presence in Italy will make him forget his life up till now - but they are just that, hypotheticals. For now, it probably makes more sense to deal with the realities of an irish kid who talks about himself entirely as an irish kid, proudly plays for the irish team currently, and maintains all his goals are with the Irish senior team.

There are a massive 4 places between Ghana and Ireland in the current FIFA rankings! If anything, a player would probably have more chance of playing in tournaments like the World Cup and continental tournaments ( AFCON/Euros) with them than Ireland.

The first part of your statement reminds me of Declan Rice.

I dont think he or Amankwah will switch but we need to be prepared to act if there is a chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,041 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Well, except that Declan Rice was an English kid, born in England, and raised in England, and playing in England.

Zefi actually being an Irish kid with an entire life's experience of being an Irish kid is a fairly substantial divergence from Rice.

well, it just makes sense that they'll come up in any conversation about players with duel citizenship, as 2 recent examples.

I would agree that they're not as relevant in these current cases though, given that these players have at least lived a very significant amount of their lives in Ireland, whereas the two English lads were very much first and foremost English lads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Yeh i know. What about all the players who have played for us over the years that werent really irish though? Look at James McCarthy for example who was scottish born and bred apart from holidaying in ireland.A real outlier. With all the new Irish starting to reach an age now where they are playing senior football we are bound to lose a few to the parent or granny rule.

Aidan McGeady being another that comes to mind.

We probably will. It’ll be a case by case thing. I think most that are born and raised here will likely play for us if they’re wanted, but it’s likely one or two will leave… I could see Ferizaj chosing Albania for instance, given how he’s talked about his roots and how closely connected he feels to Albania, fairly exclusively speaking the language at home with his family, and visiting often.

My main point is just that in Zefi’s specific case, I’m not worried.

I see Jimmy Dunne is putting together a serious run of starts for QPR are they are well in with a shout of the playoffs this year. We really aren't stuff for central defenders at all when you look at the list below

    Nathan Collins

    Andrew Omabamdele

    Shane Duffy

Seamus Coleman (Can play eight side of a back 3)

    Jimmy Dunne

    Dara O Shea

    John Egan

    Liam Scales

    Kevin Long

    Ciaran Clark

Mark McGuinness - A really exciting prospect in my view and we should be looking at him soon enough for senior level. Playing well for Cardiff.

    Daragh Lenihan

Probably missing some of the younger lads. It's amazing really. Ok the likes of Ciaran Clark and Long might not feature much again but they are still in or around the PL.

I'd like to see Jimmy Dunne, McGuinness and Collins starting some of the friendlies together if fit enough. We might also see O'Shea getting some minutes. All those lads look capable of being PL central defenders.

MARCA have put together an XI of young players to watch out for in 2022 and in goal they have Gavin Bazunu.

Incidentally, Boro are being linked with a move for Bazunu, but Portsmouth are saying City don't have that kind of recall option.

Officially announced by Pats. Talk the fee is more than what City paid Rovers up front for Bazunu, but Rovers have been making money off Bazunu playing for Ireland.

Sean Roughan joins Drogheda for the 2022 season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Worrying regarding Roughan if I'm honest. Trialled with Chelsea and Southampton recently enough and heavily linked with Arsenal a while back. If he was that good surely staying and playing at Lincoln would be priorty. Might be for personal reasons either i suppose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Doesn't make match day squads for their first team, and they don't have an U23s team in a league. They organise games like Brentford and Huddersfield do with their B teams. Daire Doyle whose assistant manager with Drogheda was Roughan's coach at school boy level. Using his connections well he is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Yeh defo a good move for the Drogs. Just goes to show you can't really believe to much written these days.

Particularly with brexit meaning that the LOI will be getting the vast majority of Irelands 'raw materials' on their books for at least a brief spell to sell on, instead of just those left unchosen by UK academies. Could make a huge difference for the Irish domestic game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,797 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Preston winning 2-0 against WBA. Browne and Cunningham both had cracking games and both were very involved in the two goals. WBA were abysmal and the three Irish lads couldn't turn things around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Cunnigham is still an option at left back. Various Irish managers havent fancied him for one reason or another.

Hopefully LOI clubs can use money from transfer fees wisely and not just do the usual pxissing it away on unsustainable, unrealistic player salaries for a few years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

MON called him up a few times when he was at his best for Preston but pretty he more often than not picked up injuries to rule him out.

Doncaster are bottom of League One so should get plenty of game time at least.

  • Registered Users Posts: 397 ✭✭square ball

Definitely, the FAI or the League itself need to try and get clubs to use as much of the transfer fees as possible to improve and develop facilities rather than just throwing out big wages that usually aren't sustainable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,797 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

My god, that "Welcome to Doncaster" tweet looks as grim as their league position.

I can't help but feel that someone thing isn't quite right there, he should surely be able to get a better team than that.

Crawford's advice of going on loan for the sake of going on loan when talking to Okoflex comes to mind with this loan. He'll get plenty of minutes but doesn't look the best loan when looking at Doncaster's position.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Was sure he was in a couple of squads in the 16/17 season but didn't make the final squad as he picked up a knock the weekend before or week leading up. Not 100% sure but can vaguely remember it happening once.

Had his bad injury in the 17/18 season but MON did have him in for friendlies in 2018.

Cathal Heffernan on trial with Bayer Leverkusen. Was training with a few clubs in Italy last summer through links with Stephen Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Article says he has a medical with the club tomorrow. Interesting move for the lad with them pushing for promotion to the championship.

Darragh Lenihan being linked to a few Premier League clubs with his contract expiring in the summer. Wolves, Newcastle, Leeds, Everton, and Aston Villa are some of the clubs named.

Jim Goodwin says Jamie McGrath is in negotiations with two clubs and rumours one of them could be Hibs who tried signing him in the summer when a move to Boro didnt happen on transfer deadline day but came in to late in the day to get it finalised.

George kelly signs for rotherham. Great move for the boy. Apologies see this is posted already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Cant do any worse than Parrott you would hope. Odubeko needs some football so lets see what happens. After a few weeks in Doncaster he'll have no issue togging for Ireland. Coming over here will be like a carribean holiday in comparison.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,597 ✭✭✭Ferris_Bueller

Hopefully works out for him. If they are signing him to be first choice then it's a very good move, is it likely he will be?

Could do a lot worse than Parrott who at least joined a team that try to play good football. Even when he joined Ipswich who aren't know for their silky footballing and didn't score much they were at least up there challenging for the play offs. Gonna be a different ball game slugging it out with the team at the bottom of the table.

Might soften his cough quite a bit and bring him back down to earth, which will be a positive straight away from this loan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Reminds me a bit like Towell's move to Brighton. Joining a team in good form and pushing for automatic promotion. Their current striking partnership are a decent duo from watching highlights on Quest. Smith has 14 goals and 6 assists while Ladpo has 8 goals.

Might take Kelly awhile to get up to speed but luckily for him they play with a front two and both Grigg and Kayode aren't that good so should get games off the bench ahead of both and hopefully can impress.

Kavanagh looks a real prospect. His movement and finishing have been real standouts at youth level for Boro. If he has in any way a decent time there he may well get a breakthrough at Boro next season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

It's a pity Kavanagh was injured throughout the summer and for the start of season. Warnock had Coburn up with the seniors last season towards the end and both lads played together with the U18s last season, though Coburn is a year older and about 6'4.

Kavanagh is the more all round player playing another across the front three and as the 10. If he had the full summer behind him and started the season way he did on his return from injury could have found himself on Warnock's radar.

Interesting to see how he'll take to senior football and might start out on the wing as Harrogate have moved to a 4-3-3 or might change back to a 4-4-2 which they've used more. Big few months for the lad to show he's up to the physicality of senior football.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,041 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Seems to be super fast, which should help with the physicality aspect a bit, in that he can play a role that puts him in space more than conflict. A wing forward role in a 4-3-3 looking to drop deep between the lines to collect and run, or to break forward onto through balls would suit him now you'd think.

    Really exciting player though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,797 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

It's a good move for him. He's probably not ready for first team football at Boro just yet, but too good to be rotting in the under-23's. At least this loan period will give him some experience a level up on what he's used to. Will be interesting to see does he sink or swim.

Nothing to prove at U23 at this stage so ready for a step up. Good luck to him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

If he swims could have him on Wilder's radar for next season, and some cup appearances. Middlesbrough's three main forwards are all loan signings and Ikpeazu has been poor all season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,797 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Odubeko goes into the first 11, Ross Tierney also getting a start.

Robinson on the bench again, behind big Andy Carroll who gets a start following his move from Reading. Assuming Valerian survives, I wonder will he need to consider finding a new club in the Summer. Clearly not the type of target man that the manager seems to favour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Even when you look at the players playing in the wide positions you've got Grant and Phillips who are both 6ft. Big issue is gonna be his wages, not that he's on much but he's an experienced championship player on low wages that West Brom probably won't want to part with unless a team makes them a good offer even if he doesn't suit their style much. For goal contributions he's second with 5 goals and 8 assists to Grants 10 goals and 4 assists.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Looking at their line up it looks to be a 4-4-2. Hopefully he gets a run out today for his senior debut.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Peter Kioso isn't in the Luton squad today. Hopefully means he's being sent out on loan before the window closes. Too good to be sitting on the bench for Luton, but hopefully it's not back to MK Dons. The change in their formation has seen Parrott come back into the starting XI.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Connolly subbed off in the 56th, and replaced by Balogun who helps put Boro 1-0 with the assist in the 58th minute.

    Jimmy Dunne scored

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,990 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Dunne having a very good season with QPR this season who are 4th atm and only two points behind Blackburn in 2nd. Himself and Lenihan are putting their hands up for possible inclusion come March if Kenny feels the need to look at depth in CB.

Calum Kavanagh came on for the last 20mins to make his senior debut in Harrogate's 3-0 lose. Good to see the Harrogate manager give him minutes straight away and should see him get plenty of more between now and May.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Another poor outing for Connolly. You'd be worried at this stage. He just doesnt look like a good player. Its unfortunate but thats the long and short of it.

Jimmy Dunne is having a really impressive season for qpr. He's got to be near enough now to starting for us.

2 years ago things were looking bright with the amount if young strikers we had coming through. Now im worried. If one of them makes it in the championship scoring 10-15 goals a season we will be doing well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,424 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

It’s a concern no doubt about it but writing off 19-21 years olds so quick is bit OTT too.

Idah was been written off and look at him now.

Connolly is 22 already. He needs to make an impact at Boro or he may be headed for league 1.

Idah still needs to do more week in week out. I can see the progression but he is not there yet. Nor is he likely to ever be a prolific goal scorer so we still need someone that can bang them in week after week
