Reddit Vs Boards. Reddit is fun/Boards users just criticize each other

Biggest thing I find with Reddit is it's fun and everyone gets along and has the craic with each other. Users on boards are just looking for an argument.

It looks like it's a lot of older high horses left on it.

Moderation is twenty years behind other sites and if they don't keep up with general young people the site will be shut down.

It's a pity cause it used to be a great site.

They're not really comparable. Reddit is more about sharing links whereas Boards is more conversation focused. Both are fine and have their uses. Reddit can be a goldmine for nice enquiries but having a normal conversation there is horrible due to the way the comments sections are laid out.

Users on boards are just looking for an argument.

Aka having a discussion. I frequent maybe a dozen forums/threads that do that - discuss - or even argue in a non-abusive manner and they are fine. As for the title, 'Boards users just criticise each other', what are you doing OP, if not criticising?

Reddit is grand but you won't get any in-depth discussion and it's often an echo chamber with how posts are ordered.

The last few months has been awful for boards and I find myself using Reddit more but I still enjoy Boards more when it's at its best. Some of the functionality of the old site has slowly come back so I find I'm visiting a bit more than I was towards the end of 2021.

Reddit is better for mindless browsing but Boards in better for engaged discussion.

Reddit is great craic, spend far too much time on it. recent /antiwork drama is interesting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,292 ✭✭✭Ubbquittious

I don't find it that great, it's like boards thankswhoring on steroids. If you don't thankswhore, nobody even gets to see what you post.

Another disadvantage of the upvoting system is that you need to get your post in the door when the thread is new, otherwise again nobody will get to see it.

god r/Ireland is a cesspool of SF Vs FFG fan boys, Vax Vs Antivax, mixed with people that appear too stupid to be left alone for their own safety, people taht have absolutly no thinking skills and come looking for answer that can be found in under 5 seconds if they bothered their arses actully lookin on revenue/welfate/citizens advice/HSE/etc website. Day after day post after post "quick question about close contact/isolation" how the **** do they not know this already its been almost two goddamn years have they been living in a hole? then you ask a simple question that you cant find teh answer to and someone is butthurt because "reasons" or you corrected their previous brain fart/misinformation/falacy and suddenly you're downvoted every time you post or respond to anything.

rcasualireland seems a lot more stable though but stay teh hell away from r/antiwork. good **** what a bunch of clowns

Not a fan of the REDDIT layout but then again not a fan of the latest incarnation of boards either but what I like about Reddit is that the conversations get to the point quickly and the mush and crap are downvoted

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,276 ✭✭✭readyletsgo

I guess r/Ireland is just not for you. Thats ok.

There are loads of other irish reddit subs, just takes time to find the ones you like. Thats the beauty of reddit. Its for every little corner of any subject in the world.

Took me a few days a few years back to understand the way chatting works on reddit but i get it now and love it.

I find it great for cooking, retro video games, music, horror or just silly funny stuff and of course the dramas that you can just laugh at lol.

Boards has its place and I'll always check in, but there are some folk on here who cant let things/topics go and move on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,177 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

I like Reddit, I use it more than boards these days but everyone gets along? If I were being impolite I'd say you were talking out of your hoop. Of course they don't, you just don't see the ones who go against the grain on Reddit because they get downvoted to oblivion or banned from the sub.

And there are just as many complaints about moderation there, subreddits set up just to complain about it.

So please, enjoy Reddit, like I do, but don't make it out to be some kind of nirvana because it clearly isn't.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Why get side tracked into ageism? I have been on Boards long enough to have an idea of the age group of many posters and you will find both open-minded oldies and narrow minded youngsters. It like making pointless guesses at whether the poster is male or female, gay or straight - if they tell you, fine, but if they don't then leave it alone and assess the post on its own merits rather than what demographic you feel the poster is in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,589 ✭✭✭touts

The big problem on both Reddit is all the Bots piling in to issue punishment beatings to anyone critical of Sinn Fein or supporting FFG. Criticise SF over on Reddit and you'll quickly get abuse and dozens of down votes from some bot farm in Moscow. Don't see the same on Boards but doubtless they are trying.

I was never a big fan of Reddit but I like it more lately, some subs are good for discussion. It's easier to avoid the sort of gossipy sanctimony or faux persecution complexes (over imaginary scenarios) that are a mainstay of AH, the main general forum. Another off-putting thing since the changeover is the fewer regular posters means that the repetitive ones are more obvious (and I'm sure I'm repetitive too, no doubt), as some of the loudest voices have a particularly limited repertoire and seem to post just endless iterations of basically the same thing. When you can predict who will post and what they'll post with near-perfect accuracy once you've read a thread title, you just stop bothering. And I know the power to start threads is in the hands of the users, but I'm not a natural at coming up with stuff. I don't think chat threads really help, but people enjoy them so they have merit. My perception is that it's mostly the same group of posters that post in them, to the near-exclusion of other things and over time they've become very personal and closed. That's my perception, I'm sure it's not everyones.

There are some corners of Reddit that are horrific hate-filled places where spite and vitriol rules the day but it's easier to avoid given the size of the site. The size also means you're less likely to encounter posters you become familiar with so it's feels less like a community - but that's what's missing on Boards now anyway, imo. The big advantage of Reddit is the variety of subs and the volume of posters, it avoids the repetitiveness. The big advantage of Boards was knowing other users and enjoying the familiarity. Now many of the good ones are gone.

It's hard to get used to the Reddit layout, that's for sure.

    You can swear on reddit.

I think we have a winner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,857 ✭✭✭Lillyfae

I just can't hack it with the formatting of threads on Reddit- I want to read posts and responses, I don't want to read digression on top of digression depending on the number of reactions any post or response gets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,437 ✭✭✭✭EmmetSpiceland

The mods, and admins, recently uncovered one pro-SF user running multiple accounts, numbering into double figures, in the “Current Affairs” forum.

While their detective work is to be commended I don’t think they can stop the tide, cut off one shinnerbot, with multiple accounts’, head and more grow in its place.

No normal party has such an online, mobilised, force at their beck and call. Whether that’s to “clog up” any threads that are negative on SF on here or if it’s to post abuse on a tribute website, so much so that it has to be taken down.

They truly are a force to be reckoned with, no scruples whatsoever.

Who's shutting us down? I want names.

A fair amount of the Shinnerbots are probably located in Russia as part of their efforts to destabilise western democracies by promoting pro-russian parties (Sinn Fein) or candidates (Trump, Orban) or disruptive policies (Brexit, Anti-Vaxx). It's likely most of the bots running around the likes of boards and Reddit have never even set foot in the country they are causing mayhem in.

Reddit is the place for all the super virtuous young people with all the woke approved opinions on everything. Strangely enough tolerance or nuance are not virtues they seem to promote. That's why there is no debate there. Anything other than the herd opinion gets voted/screamed down.

You call it 'everyone gets along' but really its a classic echo chamber and the voting system promotes that. Its 'Lenor' in html. Its comfortable but ts not real.

As many have highlighted, reddit is little more an echo chamber.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,526 ✭✭✭FintanMcluskey

Boards is for people living in Ireland/from Ireland anonymously discussing stuff.

Redditt is a global discussion forum that has incredibly virtuous anonymous user's

Oddly enough, redditt also has a surprising amount of porn content uploaded by it's user's

Boards is grand, have no idea how to use Reddit and just not enough interest to even begin to try and get my head around it or make sense of it.

Undoubtedly there’s plenty of fascinating stuff I’m interested in like development and stuff, same with Twitter, Facebook and all the rest of them though. LinkedIn is fast going the same way - very much a different culture than I’m used to.

i've been on reddit a few times and i just dont get it. there doesnt seem to be a thread as such, but just the highest voted comments up the top and those look like almost a separate thread, with an army of sub-sub-sub comments, the text box getting skinnier all the time.

boards is great, some minor gripes aside about some forum moderation and the loss of the drop down navigation menu.

Thought it was just me as I don't use Reddit really , the format is horrific

Boards is alright .Great for info. Biggest issue is the posters back and forth arguing on loads of threads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,630 ✭✭✭Gamer Bhoy 89

It's been slightly the opposite for me, likely because I don't longer in After Hours too much aside from the trivial annoyances thread (lol) and, I guess, here.

I see Reddit, particularly the r/Ireland Subreddit, to be one huge After Hours page.

Don't go in asking genuine, serious questions, or else you'll likely get the piss taken out of you.

you can do really well in terms of engagement on Reddit if you have an open mind and are willing to listen to what people have to say

Reddit is a tough one to crack at the start because the default subs are garbage. Filled with bots and echo chambers. It's hard for people to find the good ones off the bat.

It's a lot nicer with Dark mode extensions like this one on Firefox mobile.

No, I'm saying that as bad as the current version is, it's still less painful to use than Reddit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,551 ✭✭✭AllForIt

    Boards is far better structured.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,581 ✭✭✭✭MEGA BRO WOLF 5000

Oh yeah agreed. As bad as new boards is, and it is very very bad. It definitely beats the reddit structure for sure. I browse reddit a lot but as for commenting, I haven't a clue what's happening.

Reddit has some good subs but popular subs are ruined by mods. Have a watch of this video from a couple days ago and you'll see a typical mod..

There was a thread the other day in r/worldnews about the new omicron sub variant and the pro lockdown nerds upvoted it to 40k or something. I said to stop fear mongering and that the pandemic is coming to an end and gave examples of many countries removing most restrictions despite record case numbers not too long ago.

They gave me a perma ban in that sub for "spreading conspiracy theories" lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,581 ✭✭✭✭MEGA BRO WOLF 5000

I've a perma ban in a tv show subreddit discussing a TV finale that has been universally panned...for the mere suggestion that it was indeed, terrible. Boards moderation is abysmal but for the most part rules are enforced. Reddit mods ban you on an opinion they disagree with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,239 ✭✭✭Pussyhands

You just need to use the site more. What you should do to get started is think of something you like, say, jokes or rugby or DIY and then sort the subreddit by Top of All Time.

Boards displays comments in chronological order. Everyone has an equal voice. Reddit can display comments in different orders depending on time or upvotes. Most people browse comments by most upvoted. This means the best comments are to the top.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,869 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Reddit is crap, make a post and suddenly its deleted for not following the rules, not adding a flair, not adding a question tag, and so on and so on

Also hate the whole 'the cream flows to the top' (sic echo chamber upvoting each other)

Boards - unless you're a troll (and even sometimes a troll) the discussion flows and everyone gets an equal voice

A few subreddits I visit but they would be more niche and not really critique style postings

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,745 ✭✭✭StupidLikeAFox

There is some amount of brain dead tripe on Reddit. You could come across a guy who spent 5 years glueing lollipop sticks to his car, or a guy eating his breakfast when a bird lands on the table. I used to use it a good bit but I eventually went from "wow this is mildly interesting", to "why the hell were they filming this" to "why the **** am I spending hours watching these pointless clips"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,745 ✭✭✭StupidLikeAFox

I just fired up the app there now and in the first ten posts I saw:

    • A chimp feeding a tortoise
    • A guy giving cpr to a dog
    • A dog running around in circles really fast on the passenger seat of a car
    • A picture of a big shark
    • A girl doing keepy uppys and kicking a ball into a basketball net
    • A video of a Chinese woman being chased by a duck

It's just an endless stream of pure shite

Yes, it certainly is a stream of pure shlte until you log in and subscribe to the subreddits you're interested in and remove the defaults.

Accountancy? Lego? Boomerangs? Web development? Clocks?

It's all there but you have to go look for it. Then when you do that, your homepage is filled with those types of posts.

Boards displays comments in chronological order. Everyone has an equal voice.

    This is a good thing.

Reddit can display comments in different orders depending on time or upvotes. Most people browse comments by most upvoted. This means the best comments are to the top.

No, it means the most popular comments are to the top. That's very different. I've seen comments on technical subs that were upvoted to the sky and were completely and utterly wrong, though commonly believed. If a subject is even slightly controversial or even just debatable Reddit is a waste of time. All the viewer will glean is what is the consensus of that sub. If you're into right wing nonsense you'll find subs where all will agree with you, if you're into left wing nonsense ditto. Pick any personal hobby horse you like and you'll find a sub that will agree with you and downvote any dissent, while another will totally disagree with you and upvote that same dissent to the top.

While the original idea had merit Reddit is fundamentally designed to create echo chambers. And it does. Which I would contend is what people actually want and that open old style forums were the temporary exception.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
