actually, my fault...schoolboy error....not enough power from modem usb port (is that a usb 2.0 or usb 3 port ?)....got a y cable and got extra power to the drive (2.5" ssd) and it showed up then.

How'd you prepare the drive? I can only seem to get write access over the network when using NTFS. But then I'd prefer a format supported by Mac for when I need to transfer to the drive over USB.
Also, what type of transfer speed do you get?
