As above Dairygold is a vegetable oil spread or margarine.

Should be forced to drop the Dairy portion from the name as there is none in it.

I alway keep a portion in a butter dish as a ready to use option.

In the kitchen. Room temperature is the only way to use butter.

Buy any own brand butter but the ones in a wrapper not in a tub. Buy a nice butter dish and leave out of the fridge.

Any aul plastic tub with a lid will do - we keep the butter in the fridge and periodically cut lumps off it into the tub. Tub is kept inside the press beside the bread. It's a bit of extra hassle over margarine but it's well worth it for the taste.

If you are buying butter believe it or not the best butter made in peak cream season is used in for the "Softer" butter in tubs. This is softer because of the high cream quality. So if you want the best and softest butter buy that.

Spreadable tubs are not the same as softer. Spreadable is made spreadable by adding vegetable oil to it.

Kerrygold is the most expensive. It is purely branding. It literally comes off the same line in Mitchelstown as Dairymanor in Lidl, Connacht Gold, and various other brands. If you want to check pick up a pack of Kerrygold and look for the factory symbol at the back. Then pick up the butter beside it that is €1.50 cheaper. Same factory code. Kerrygold was a brand for rich Americans to buy a taste of the old country. Then Irish people got rich also and the Irish Dairy Board realised they could make a bigger fortune at home than in America.

In winter the Irish Dairy Board (now called Ornua who run the factory in Mitchelstown), Avonmore, Dairygold etc all buy frozen butter from other co-ops because they won't have made enough frozen butter themselves in the summer. So that's why the quality, taste etc could change. It should all be more or less identical as it is made from cream but it does vary depending on when in the summer the butter was made and which part of the cow was grazing.

Got a fright there for a moment as I confused dairygold with kerrygold. Palm oil in kerrygold would be a national scandal.

If you don't want to keep it out, just chop off a piece and pop it in the microwave for 5-10 seconds. Be grand!
