Dessie sounds like he's doing a bit of a Fred Davis there competing at 72. And why not.

There seems to be a 15 year old child playing in the Scottish open this morning.

Amaan Iqbal born 17/02/06 from Scotland. Losing 3-0 to Noppon Saengkham. Fair play to the gosson

I wonder how many he has made outside of competition? For all his talk about not being bothered about making 147's in competition now. He seemed to really have enjoyed those two.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

A bit of movement on the rankings. Ronnie is back up to World number 2 and Trump falls to 3.

Lisowski is outside the top 16 by 3 grand, so there will as usual be a bit of a race before the Crucible. Between him, Brecel 16th, McGill 15th and maybe Bingham up in 14th.

    Zhao is top 8 now.

On the 1 year list Selby has failed to make the top 16 cut, so World Number 1 and World Champ won't be in Wolverhampton next week for the ITV4 Cazoo Players Championship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,489 ✭✭✭AllForIt

I didn't watch the UK champs last year so didn't see Zhao play much except for the last session of the final.

Looking back on his play via youtube since his German Masters win yesterday, I do think excitement over his potential to be one of the greats, or at least well up there, is warranted.

I still can't get over the look on Trumps face in the GM's when he lost to Zhao 5 - 1. I think that was because he sees that Zhao has something he doesn't have, and that is Zhao's fluidity and temperament. Thump looked shell shocked. Those are things you can't really practice and often makes the difference between people who can play snooker to a high level and those that win. Same like any sport. Not that Trump hasn't won anything, but that Zhao is someone he must be personally concerned about.

Likely not much interest but first womens world championships since 2019 breaks off at Ding academy this morning. No one other than Reanne Evans or Ng On Yee has lifted the trophy since 2004 but think this could be the year of 22 year old Nutcharut Wongharuthai from Thailand who reached the qfs of Q Tour event 3 last week, beating former main tour players Billy Castle and Daniel Wells along the way. I wonder if she's set to take the women's game to the next level and will look forward to seeing her on the main tour later this year.

I saw this nice visualisation graph of snooker breaks. What stood out to me was where Hendry, Higgins. Selby are - those three are basically all rounders. Higgins obviously the best all rounded player. But taking away Higgins - it would have to be Selby and Hendry IMO.

But look at where Willie Thorne is??

    Plus I assume they didn't have space for Fergal O'Brien ? 😉

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Jimmy White was on Tommy Tiernan last night and said he is aiming to win the World Championship in 3 years. Dont see it happening myself but best of luck to him.

Great interview with him though. But yeah he's not winning the worlds!

By miles it seems way out on his own judging by that graph. Obviously 1000 plus centuries might have skewed it a touch!

So Nutcharut "Mink" Wongharuthai wins the women's world championships and earns herself a 2 year card on the main tour. First real glimpse of her and doubt she was at her best, had a struggle to win 6-5. But a spectacular long potter, as good as a lot of top 16 guys I've seen, so if can improve her all round game, can definitely see her win a few matches next season.

Also at the ding academy, tomorrow sees the start of the WSF amateur championships with the juniors first up. Aaron Smith of crossguns and Leone Crowley of Cork in the field and there's a main tour card on offer for the winner. It's Leones first outing on the international stage and will be interested to see how he fares. Has been spending a lot of quality time in England, practising in Sheffield and playing pro ams, so he's getting a good education. Hopefully can negotiate the group stages anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,401 ✭✭✭AyeGer

Imagine the excitement if he did reach the final again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,097 ✭✭✭✭The Nal

Hes currently ranked 114th in the world. Qualifying would be a huge achievement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

2 out of 3 wins for Leone Crowley at the WSF junior championships so that will be safely into the knock out stages which would have been a good target for him. Hopefully avoids the big guns and gets a chance to go another round or two. Great experience for him and can only improve.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Unfortunately Leone bumped into a decent English kid so his race is run for this week but he's in the senior event next week so good to be getting these games. It's all ahead of him.

There's a Welsh kid called Liam Davies, just 15, made tournament high break of 134 yesterday and is knocking in 60, 70 breaks for fun. Very exciting prospect and think we'll be hearing a lot about him in not too distant future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

No trip to Wales for Aaron this season as loses his qualifier to Chris Wakelin 0-4. No way to sugar coat it really, just a straight up sub par performance this morning. Back on the table to face young chinese player Fan Zhengyi in the European Masters last 64 on Monday. So quick chance to make amends, but Fan reached qfs of German Masters recently so not an easy task at all. Hopefully can show some improvement on this morning at least.

The ceiling's about to fall in, flaming heck😜

31-year-old On Yee is competing as a wildcard on the main tour alongside Reanne Evans, who is the only other woman to enjoy competitive wins over a male player with Eurosport pundit Evans defeating Thepchaiya Un-Nooh at the 2013 Wuxi Classic and Robin Hull in a World Championship qualifier five years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

I think Ng On Yee is a nice tidy player, better than Reanne and i think "Mink" Wongharuthai who'll be on the main tour next season will be a step up on both of them. It'll almost certainly take a couple of generations for a real impact to be seen, but they've got to start somewhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Fergal out of European Masters with a 3-5 defeat to Wu Yize, probably just cost him a grand as he'd likely have run into Ronnie anyway, but it's enough to knock him out of the one year list qualifiers. Every £1,000 is critical from here on in!

Speaking of Ronnie, interesting the worlds No.1 and 2 are both on the baize at 2.30. Not sure selby gonna like it but no way ronnie don't get to be on match table, I'd say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,518 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

Strange lack of crowd at Milton Keynes for the European Masters. Even the likes of Ronnie and Trump playing in front of a few dozen fans.

I know it was a switch of venue but they still had 2 months lead in time to generate interest, and MK has a population near 250K. Tickets were £10 for these sessions on the first 4 days so they haven't particularly over-priced them. Maybe it's just the sort of place that you wouldn't travel to from outside.

    What channel is it on?

Yeah and there have been so many tournaments there lately that everyone who wants to go has been there??

Eurosport1 from 2.30 (afternoon session/matches) and the evening ones from 6.30pm

might be more coverage on the Eurosport app or "Discovery+" ..whatever that is..

Good reffing there from Andy Yates (sp?) ,,, didn't look like a freeball there,,, fair play tee Andy!

Ronne just shooting the breeze there with one of his mates I presume 😃

he deserved a clap for not fouling there, did WU. very awkward bridging there from amongst the reds with that touching ball a few shots back,, must be very very few people there at European Masters in MK,,, folk must be sick of venturing to Milton Keynes, as another poster mentioned,, it's almost like watching a match from the last 18 months or so, it's that quiet!

    That’s some shot by Wu,

This seems to be only the second tournament at MK this season. Can't remember how well attended the English Open was, and anything the previous season was behind closed doors. This one just seems to be bizarre, you'd think people would turn up for Ronnie anyway.

Ronnie offering some good words of encouragement,, spent a while talking to Wu after the match.

  • Registered Users Posts: 538 ✭✭✭B2021M

Sorry you're right...of course lots of them were behind closed doors. It is very odd yes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,483 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

People may just need a break from the snooker this week. I've hardly had it on myself.

One week seems to blend into another for some of these tournaments. And want to be rested ahead of the Players Championship and Sheffield.

Snooker is banned until the final this week in my house. The missus has had enough. Working from home means I get to see the afternoon sessions though.

I need to prioritise watching the worlds.

Stunning result for Leone Crowley in the WSF championships, beating experienced former tour pro Billy Castle 3-0 to reach the last 32. Looks like he'll run into Michael White in the next round which is another tough ask, but it's been a great tournament for the 15 year old who hopefully has a good future ahead of him. Last of the Irish left standing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Well, that ends Leone' s journey in the world amateurs amwyay, 0-3 to Michael White. Slow, nervy start and gave up third frame after his opponent needed snookers. Good lesson learned and good two weeks for him. Nice to have a talent like that to give us some more hope.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

If you're going to draw Stephen Maguire, no better time to play than 10am on a Monday morning! But really clinical performance from Fergal, missed hardly anything and I'm confident would take Thepchaiya next round if he can reproduce that. Ken could really do with a win too, but will have it tougher against Mark Allen this pm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,940 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Haha I will have to look at highlights of that. I see that Fergal is now ranked ahead of Ken.

Fergal 74 and Ken 77. Fergal is now Ireland's No1. Hill is at 99.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Yeah, i think the rankings accurately reflect the current pecking order. Fergal just has that desire and ferocious will to compete that i think he'll be the one to retain his card for next season. I'd love to see all 3 do it, but realistically, my only confidence is in Fergal. I think Aaron's time will come, all a learning process for him, still a baby in snooker terms.

Was actually thinking about Aaron during last night's final. He actually played pretty well against Fan Zhengyi last week and wasn't much between them, just a little lapse of concentration here and there. And i remember when he beat Zhao Xintong last autumn not long before Zhao went on to win the UK. So he knows he can compete with these guys, just a matter of finding the consistency and fluency when he's in on breaks.

Welsh Open on Eurosport and Quest atm. Jordan Brown playing Mitchell Mann in rnd 1. 3 apiece, and it's very early into decider, with Mitchell having a decent lead of 35-4.. Good pot on red and now JB has advantage here, with snooker behind brown,,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,097 ✭✭✭✭The Nal

Jimmy really turning it on here against Robbo. 2 breaks of 25 so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

    Chen goes 3-0 down…

deserves to be after playing an absolutely suicidal shot to the middle pocket at a speed that might have even broken the tip it was that ferocious… table not at his mercy but a great scoring chance…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,947 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

After getting a frame back Chen under hits an easy positional shot…

Jeez and under hitting safeties now…Selby with a few poor shots but Chen not looking confident and misses another long but straight red.. his highest break 22….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Big puff of the cheeks from Fergal as he closes it out against Theppy. Nerves of steel. Thep should have closed it out in the last but gave Fergal the chance and took it with open arms. Thats a big win in terms of his tour place and not done yet with Jimmy Robertson up next for a place in the qfs. Well within his scope in this form i would say.

Edit: today is only R32 match, not 16. Maguire match was held over, of course, so got bit ahead of myself!

Gas man Ronnie I reckon he talks all that nonsense to take the pressure off

He'll be winning tournaments when he's 50 ,he'll never retire

that was a very entertaining decider between Selby and Highfield,, a great clearance by Highfield, after winning safety exchanges, with some fabulous pots, ensures he gets the victory over the jester - that's 3 times he's beat Selby now,,

and Ron thinks Fergal O'Brien (ranked 64) deserves a wildcard like what Jimmy, Hendry etc have. fair play to Ron there.
