Ciara Kelly on NT just summed it up perfectly in a response to some of the texts from listeners suggesting restrictions should be kept until cases are around 1000 daily.

The restrictions were to protect us from Covid, not to appease people's anxieties.

Best way I've heard it put in a long time!

Not everyone thinks like you and you might want to reflect on your need to use Twitter for kicks! It will take time, quite some time for a proportion of people to fully readjust so less of the sneering.

Any rumoured timeline for when masks are being removed (bar airlines)? Is next Monday too optimistic?

To be fair, twitter has been weaponised by those using it to attack anyone not as concerned or anxious about Covid throughout the "crisis", as well as simultaneously increasing the general level of fear in the general population.

You are absolutely right that many will take a long time to readjust to normal life and some indeed may never fully do so, but the problem there is with the blanket and one-sided coverage of this issue over the last 2 years and the impact its had on mental health and society generally, which is clearly going to be far more damaging and lasting on this country long term.

Like most things on social media you will only here the most extreme views. The teachers I work with can't wait for masks to go. However I do know one girl who is very vocal on social media about why masks should be kept but they are out and about socialising and getting on with life. Covid restrictions suited certain peoples lifestyles and they don't want it to be over. Fortunately common sense will prevail now however and people will be free to do what they feel is best for them. Well hopefully!

An ability to filter such stuff is a very good life skill and some people recognised that by reducing their exposure to things COVID, many sadly did not and developed an obsession with being absolutely up to date. Some of my extended circle and family were dosed up on COVID news from sunup to sundown. Twitter is a sewer and has been even worse during this and a curated feed is the only way to get real benefit out of it!

Not that I've seen yet. My prediction is Tony and Co will meet today, Micheal will do his speech at the podium tomorrow evening for the 6.1, and restrictions could very well be lifted from midnight - albeit with strong encouragement to continue to use caution where necessary (his personal bias will colour his speech).

It'll be a welcome relief for those of us who've always questioned the need and duration of restrictions, but it'll be the wrong message - people need to be encouraged now to return to fully normal life, just as they got on with living with minor respiratory illnesses prior to 2020.

Starting to undo the effects on mental health is just as, if not even more, important at this point.

I would like that schools open windows and freshen room air circulation when kids are out of room on their breaks. It’s good for the fresh air to come in, but not when they are sitting in the class.

NPHET due to meet today, cabinet not due until it's usual Tuesday meeting next week. I highly doubt they'll hold a special cabinet meeting for this so it'll just be on next weeks agenda. Also highly doubt they'll be any sort of speech, will probably just be a post cabinet announcement and the usual Government press conference on post cabinet issues.

If they remove the mask mandate, does that mean still that shops can request we wear one?

I hated getting petrol and then having to put my mask on to enter and pay. So I wonder if petrol stations could still ask for them as an example.

They can ask you to wear a sombrero if they want to.

    It's their shop.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,812 ✭✭✭✭bear1

A sombrero you say... eBay here I come

I'm not arguing with the timing of an announcement, but I suspect there'll be another walk down the steps to announce the masks being dropped.

This should remove some ambiguity over the restrictions being dropped and it'll allow Mehole to advise us to keep wearing the rags, even if it's not legally required any more.

They'll take the opportunity to declare the restrictions are finally at an end, and it'll also be an opportunity to pat us on the heads for being good boys and girls over the last two years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 627 ✭✭✭DLink

Now that I think about it a bit more, if and when the leaks confirm that the face rag law is being dropped, some people will bin them there and then.

They might have to meet and just drop the law seeing as people will jump the gun.

They can ask all they want, but they ain't getting my money if they do.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,264 ✭✭✭✭stephenjmcd

I don't think there'll be any walk down the steps, seems pretty pointless to me personally, he got his big speech done when they lifted everything a few weeks ago, there's not alot more to be said now than there was then. It's something that can pretty easily be communicated via government press release and then the usual press conferences such as is done in NI for example.

  • Registered Users Posts: 627 ✭✭✭DLink

    Time will tell.

Don't care to be honest, once the masks go away ASAP!

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,375 ✭✭✭corcaigh07

There will be a walk I'd say and hopefully tomorrow if the leaks gather pace today.

There's enough there to blather on about with the rule changes, how we have been such good boys and girls, the money to Frontline workers and the extra bank holiday coming up.

It'll be temporary respite from the cost of living inflation.

Oh Micheal will definitely want his "statesman" speech when they announce the removal of the last of the restrictions - it's more politics, polls and optics rather than just information, especially when the details are always in the media hours or indeed days earlier.

He'll want to be out in front of the cameras rather than being upstaged by Leo (again!)

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,860 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

Pat Kenny again fretting over mask-wearing and nervousness. I'm guessing he wasn't listening to Ciara earlier.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,957 ✭✭✭kirk.

What are the chances of it being an advisory and the shops keeping masks

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,860 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

Listening to some of Kenny's guests there the 2 he's had on are supporting the idea of personal choice , despite Pat audibly unhappy with the answer.

As I said the other day, any retailers who try to enforce it will just lose custom to those who aren't.

  • Registered Users Posts: 627 ✭✭✭DLink

It's getting choose to the end, the twitchers are panicking, swimming in vain against the tide.

I still can't figure what game King Tony is playing, after all our abundance of caution it almost feels like he's throwing caution to the wind!

    Not complaining though 🎉

  • Registered Users Posts: 627 ✭✭✭DLink

Hard to tell, just take your money elsewhere until they cop on to themselves if they try and keep masks.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,957 ✭✭✭kirk.

    True ,can't stand the things

They do tend to think as a group though in this pc age we live in

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,860 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

Nah it's done... they had one of the industry reps on with Pat Kenny a few minutes ago and he reckons that his members want a change and support the idea of personal choice. Also mentioned that he was in the UK recently where mask wearing has disappeared almost entirely and that he predicts we'll head the same way over the coming weeks.

Sounds right... Irish people love consensus and to be seen doing the right thing. When they realise that more and more people are just getting on with their lives and living normally again, they'll quietly put the mask away as well. By Paddy's Day I reckon they'll be the exception, not the rule.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,860 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

I'll be one of those who will be dumping them in the bin as soon as the mandatory requirement is lifted. I might even record the event for posterity! 😂

Gen sec. of NBRU wants masks until end of march when there's ' fewer coughs and colds'

Another doctor saying continue to wear masks if you don't want to get COVID ' there's an awful lot of it about '

This sh1t would never end if these people had authority
