Very good win for Liverpool. 20 minutes of pressure at the start of the second half, but even still, Alisson didn't exactly have a save to make as they failed to have a single shot on target in the whole game. They were always a bit off with their final ball from promising positions.

Klopp brought on 3 to stem the tide and it very clearly worked and Liverpool had the legs on them until the final whistle.

Two shots on target, two goals, gotta be happy with that result away to a good Inter team.

Not sure if this is serious hes been brilliant when fit

Him and Fabinho have started 18 games together won 17 &, drew 1

    Thiago been great when fit

VVD was immense tonight, that's the best I've seen him play since his injury.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,612 ✭✭✭eigrod

He’s a joy to watch. Great energy and vision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,792 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

What, Thagio has been very good since his arrival. His problem is he can't stay fit!! The only reason Liverpool are actually in the CL this season is because they got him back for the last 10 games of last year and they won 9 and drew 1 after loading 6 on the trot without him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,048 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Bayern lucky to get the draw tonight. They just don't look their usual self these last few weeks.

Cracking win for Liverpool having not played very well I thought Konate was brilliant last night his best game for Liverpool his reading of the game and positioning was fantastic but Inter are an ordinary team at best a damning indictment of Italian football that they are the current champions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,124 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

With Juve in a bit of a slump/rebuilding Serie A has lost it's only current super club. As a Serie A fan I am delighted as an even open league is way better than the 9 years of Juve as champions.

For a myriad of reasons Italy is not going to have 3 or 4 super clubs any time in the near future so I will take being crap in the CL if it means a good league.

The real damning indictment of football is all the other crap leagues propped up by 1 or 2 super clubs. Only the PL and until recently La Liga could really point to having a healthy league going all the way down to the EL teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,378 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

If it wasn't for Liverpool then City would have been unchallenged since 17-18 league campaign and would look very similar to the rest.

Ya but look at how many PL teams are in the list of top favourites for the various European competitions.

CL really is England + a handful of clubs right now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

True - and as long as they rig the draw to keep PL teams apart, this will be a self-fulfilling prophecy due to coefficients, etc, etc. Just get it to an open draw and let them fight it out earlier if needs be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,635 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Yor correct in the main, but I'd question terming Juve a super club, at least in a European context.

In spite of being almost constant participants, only 2 European Cup wins, one of them won in the shadow of the horrible night in the Heysel which should never have been played. It's a poor return, huge underachievement imho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,124 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I meant super club in a very different way. PSG and Man City are now super clubs with their 0 and AC Milan are also rans with 7 European cups.

Juve won 9 Serie A in a row which doubled the old record and we're competing with the best in the CL only a few years ago.

I would say the UEFA league coefficient is pretty accurate right now its just the gap between 1 and the rest is massive.

It was true at the time in the game when I typed and posted it. Inter missed a lot of chances during the game, the first half in particular.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,366 ✭✭✭✭8-10

*away games you mean as being unusual

Their previous 2 games before these were both at Anfield against different teams

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,225 ✭✭✭marklazarcovic

they had zero shots on target the whole match? hardly a lot of chances so...a few half chances, the one against woodwork being by far the best one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,124 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

There were shots taken inside the box and some very dangerous square balls played that were blocked by some very good last minute defending from Liverpool.

Shots on target is a nonsense way to judge a game. Teams can have 20 shots and lose to a team with 1 or even 0

Inters XG was 0.46. That wouldn't indicate to many clear chances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,225 ✭✭✭marklazarcovic

You can have 20 or 50 ,if none are on target your not playing well.

XG isn't everything there isn't much doubt inter did create a lot of dangerous moments in the game, but Liverpool defended very well the position Of the 2 cbs and goalkeeper was near perfect every time.

If inter had a bit more quality or if dezko. Was a big quicker :) these may have been more dangerous but you can't really tell.

I hadn't seen Liverpool As open in a Long time but when you defend that well you can be.

It's not a ciritisiam just how it was what's was inter xT

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,287 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

Think he means last 2 games in the Champions League, last group game was away to AC Milan and 1st Knock-out game was away to Inter both in the same ground

Glasgow Celtic won 9 domestic titles in a row recently, they're a big club, and have only 1 less European Cup than Juventus.

I think Juve are massive underachievers in Europe. They had a free run in Italy for a decade, could build and concentrate on Europe and the dream of winning the Champions League, even going as far as buying Ronaldo to get them over the line and they still came up short.

If they are financially Super Clubs, the likes of City and PSG, they have to win on the pitch as well. Maybe Juve off the field are in that bracket, backed up as they are by the Agnelli clan and FIAT etc, but on the field all 3 have still a lot to do to join the real European Super Clubs with numerous titles like Real, Barca, Liverpool, Bayern, AC Milan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,124 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Again we are talking very different kinds of super club.

Celtic are not a big club and have not been in a long time .We massively over inflate their importance in Ireland. I do agree Juve have under achieved massively historically given the amount of league success but recently they were on their absolute limit getting to recent finals and Ronaldo masked the fact that they cant compete financially with the richest clubs and they were also better before he came along.

Unless its a 0-0 draw and your defence are playing a blinder. By your theory both Inter and Liverpool were playing crap for 60 mins because they didnt score.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,089 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

It definitely looked like Inter were threatening, but they didn't back it up with clear cut chances.

From memory, they had that shot that hit the bar from a narrow angle in the 1st half (that shot had an XG of 0.06). Skirinar had a header from a corner just outside the 6 yard box too, and this was their highest rated chance on XG, which was 0.09. In the 2nd half, they had that cross they put in by Perisic that Martinez wasn't able to connect with. A chance alright there tbf, but he didn't make use of it. Dzeko did break through on goal too, and scored, but he was well offside and everyone knew it before he had even put the ball in the net.

That 15 minute period in which Inter dominated gives an almost false perception of how the overall game played out. Perception can be heavily affected by what commentators are saying, what result you want etc. I know it's a different competition and game, but at the weekend there was a narrative that Burnley were unlucky against Liverpool and had numerous clear cut chances etc. In reality, the majority of those chances were actually flagged offside at the time, or probably would have been by VAR if they had actually gone in.

To be fair, that 15 mins spell was very dominant by Inter and it certainly gave me a worry. It gave Klopp a worry too, as they made early changes in the 2nd half. Those subs changed the game IMO, backed up by Inter tiring after their big effort in this period. They needed to score, but didn't. They didn't test the keeper.

As for xT, these graphics show both the xT over the course of the game and also the cumulative xG. From the same model.

Wow bit surprised by that deffo thought inter were more Threatening than that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,843 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

I was actually expecting a tougher game,

Liverpool had a bit of a leg sapping game away to Burnley in the rain & then the trip to the San Siro ,Not the easiest ogames ot have back to back,

Once Klopp made the 3 changes & freshened up the midfield it was game over, Liverpool to be far played much of the game in second gear,

Should be game over now but you never know

My initial reaction was "that's not fair" but I suppose if it hurts Russia's pocket, I'm in favour of it.

Wont hurt their pocket much, will hurt the esteem their are held in internationally

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,297 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

It should never have been given the final in the first place.

Uefa need to stop putting the final in poorly located cities.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

BBC Sport understands the game will still be played on Saturday, 28 May, which is likely to rule Wembley out as a host as the League Two and Championship play-off finals are set to be played at the stadium over that weekend.

The FAI should be all over this. It would be great to have a CL final in Dublin and there might be some goodwill towards us since we had to miss out on hosting games for the Euros.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,297 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

No chance of Dublin hosting it, the Aviva is far too small.

Not enough hotel rooms in Dublin either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,330 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Warsaw or Bucharest would be more of a statement

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,516 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

We got the 2024 Europa League final via this 'goodwill'. Bilbao got the 2025 final for the same reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

I forgot all about that. Teams for tonight:

Chelsea XI: Mendy; Christensen, Silva, Rudiger; Azpilicueta, Kante, Kovacic, Alonso; Ziyech, Havertz, Pulisic.

Lille XI: Jardim; Zeki Çelik, Fonte, Botman, Djalo; Onana, Xeka, Andre; Sanches, David, Bamba.

Villarreal XI: Rulli; Foyth, Albiol, Pau Torres, Pedraza; Chukwueze, Capoue, Parejo, Alberto Moreno; Lo Celso, Danjuma.

Juventus XI: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Danilo, De Ligt, Alex Sandro; Cuadrado, Locatelli, Rabiot, McKennie; Vlahovic, Morata.

I'd expect Chelsea to get a solid win. Other tie is harder to call. I'd like to see Danjuma make a statement.

The Aviva has a slightly higher capacity than Porto's stadium which hosted the 2021 final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,023 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Not terribly relevant in that case though - that final was meant to be in the Ataturk, but was switched late to the Dragao in Porto because of Covid numbers in Turkey. Capacity didn't matter so much since there was only ~14,000 allowed go with covid regulations anyway.

Chelsea lead at the break but Lille have responded well to the goal. Thought Renato Sanches looked very good.

Vlahovic the one making a statement in the other game. First CL goal on his debut after 33 seconds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,198 ✭✭✭Talisman

There has been a supposition that the stadium hosting the final has to have a high capacity (70K+), but that isn't the case it just needs to be a category 4 stadium. The stadiums that have hosted the last three finals have had less than 70K capacity that Platini recommended. The capacity is only an issue for the fans of the teams involved and the reason the original statement regarding 70K stadiums. UEFA really don't care so long as it's sufficient to meet their own hospitality requirements, they take ~30K tickets and the remainder is split between the clubs and a lottery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,858 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

Villareal equalise against Juve. I suppose Juve still favourites for the tie if it finishes like this but wouldn't be surprised if Villareal went through

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Chelsea almost there now. The other tie is tight. Wonder can Emery pull something out of the bag.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,023 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Cool, was just pointing out that them pickin' a smaller stadium in 20/21 doesn't mean much, since it was a late forced switch and only for a small covid capacity. Very specific set of circumstances, so it's not a great reference to point towards in support of smaller stadiums hosting a CL final. You've to go back 18 years to find a final with a stadium capacity of under 60,000. And that one was still bigger than the Aviva.

Think we'd all agree that generally speaking, it's better that it goes to big stadiums that get more fans into it though. Be lovely to have a CL final in Dublin and all that of course, but for fans of the teams taking part, I'm sure they'd much rather an extra 10 or 20 thousand seats available to them. Europa Final is a cool one to have anyway.

United are very lucky that they're only 1 nil down at half-time.
