Asset freeze/confiscation

I'm wondering what are people's thoughts on this.

The Canadian Government is freezing assets (bank savings) of protestors against its vaccine mandates.

Do you agree with this? Would you be happy for Irish/EU leaders to freeze assets of ordinary citizens or seize them or would it depend on whose assets are being frozen/seized, i.e. its okay to confiscate assets of 'the bad people' (people whose political opinions different from your own or from the Government's).

Is a State of Emergency a good enough reason to freeze or seize assets? Should physical assets (real estate) be up for confiscation?

I don't support it under any circumstances.

yes, because protestors are being idiots, theres not a fcuking widescale infringement on freedoms, government polices have been implemented to protect citizens, just like state bodies implement other protective measures such as road traffic laws!!!!

Do you not see that the principle is independent of a particular political phenomenon?

For instance during Northern Ireland Civil Rights marches, would it have been acceptable in your opinion if those protestors had their bank accounts frozen?

I think it sets a bad precedent. Protesting is legal and there is no political tradition of starving out protestors or stealing their assets. It seems to me like a throwback to colonial times.

the protestors would be better off protesting over the cost of living, in which their profession is being very badly hit, instead theyve decided to say their 'freedoms have been infringed upon', this is pure bollcoks, liberatarian horsesh1t. state interventions are critical at times, yes some state interventions can and do some great harm, but some just bloody make sense, such as many state inventions during the pandemic.

comparing northern ireland to these protests, i dont think so!!!!!

the canadian government have been more than accommodating, theyve given protestors and chance to protest, but now its beginning to endanger many

Okay so if they were protesting the cost of living would it be wrong to freeze their bank accounts or would it be okay?

I'm comparing them to NI protests because I'm trying to understand at what point does asset freezing/confiscation become legitimate in your eyes.

'It depends on what is being protested' seems to be your answer.

Any protest could be subject to freezing assets at that rate and the right to protesting is a protected activity .where would the government stop? Water protests ,fuel protests, .

During the last crash everyone's pension pot was raided. Laws have been passed where it was illegal to have gold. During the Troubles all private firearms where confiscated.

It's happened before and it'll happen again. You have the right to protest, you don't have the right to shutdown a city for 23 days.

When the water protest was up in Dublin we brought the city to a standstill ...guess what...no water charges....they tryed every trick in the book with jailings ,Garda escorts and police with dogs and baton charges...guess what ..they failed......if people want to protest ...let them protest...just because it's not dear to your heart doesn't mean you can dismiss it.....Trudeau sounds like a spoiled kid

If people want to protest, let them,

If government want to seize assets, let them.

10bn of tax measures introduced during the crisis but the 0.4bn gross cost of water charges got some people to the street.

Credit card charge was another pet hate of mine ...as was property tax ..but not enough people would protest..Dublin was just too far for them ..the Irish unlike the french and English just don't like to protest...it's as if they love pain ...never understood it.

Government work for US ...we pay their salary's...and we don't pay them to throw unjust taxes onto us..some taxes yes. You must be able to live as well..

Do CAB not already have the power to seize assets?

As a spectator it's my perspective that it's not because they have a difference of opinion but how they are expressing that opinion.

Saying that the official reaction seems way out of all proportion.

"The Canadian Government is freezing assets (bank savings) of protestors" - savings or funding for the protests that was coming from abroad?

I think if it's criminal. They can freeze assets but protesting is not criminal as far as I'm aware.we would be walking down a very dangerous path if it was..

Since they could not access their bank account at all, I assume both.

It isn't illegal for Canadians to receive donations from Americans. Also the protests are because they have been forced from their jobs, so they're surviving on handouts (including food from locals).

CAB can not seize assets from protestors because they don't like the political stance of the protest. They go after violent gangsters.

Feels weird to be on the same side of a discussion as the op, but freezing Bank accounts for people taking part in protests - of whatever type - seems kinda f*cked up to me.

you don't negotiate with violent fascists, and that is what trudo has decided will happen, he will not negotiate with violent fascists and is going to stop them spreading their poison and using funds to engage in violence and spreading anti-vax mumbo jumbo.

would there be a better way then taking assets, possibly but trudo's intent and the reasons behind it are quite right and understandable.

the canadians have been more then accommodating to them and now they have had enough, and have decided it's time for them to go home.

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

Most of the donations to the cause were from abroad.

So? Canada borders a culturally similar country to its south which has roughly ten times its population.

The Irish government don't seize donations to Sinn Feiners which originated in Boston, New York and London.

So you would have supported a confiscation of funds of BLM protestors, water charge protestors etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,009 ✭✭✭✭Danzy

Regardless of the protestors beliefs but seizing assets, locking bank accounts etc like this is straight out of apartheid South Africa.

That's because the water charges were going to affect the cradle to the grave social welfare families.

But on topic no the protesters should not have their assets seized for protesting. Any criminal damage they do should of course be prosecuted in the criminal courts.

Bertie was miles ahead of those protestors

If assets would be used to facilitate protests that’s fair enough or indeed any illegal activity associated with it.

if it’s just to piss off protesters, not a good look.
