I draw an occupational pension, and about every other year the administrators write to ask for proof of life. At least it's some attempt at checks and balances. Is it beyond the wit of government to do something similar?

Someone other then the claimant can collect the payment for maybe a fortnight in an emergency. Then the claimant has to appoint an agent. If the claimant is unable to sign the form then a GP gets involved.

Theres also a temporary agent form which can only be got in the PO.

Can you imagine the uproar when some auld one had their money cut off cos they didn't understand that they had to fill in the form?

The form works for an occupational pension, because everyone who held down a job which is flash enough to have one can read. The general population is quite different.

Assuming you are a citizen of this Republic, he and his father before him put their hands into YOUR pocket and stole YOUR money. You are part of the state.

Amazing the amount of comments supporting this guy, I don't agree with a lot of Government policies but thats no reason to praise welfare fraud.

But I suspect a lot of the fine upstanding citizens over on FB who think this is a good thing would the the roll out of bed at midday to get the dole crew who are too thick and stupid to realise its working people who fund the welfare system here.

82% of deaths occur in the over 65s, and the vast majority of those would be receiving a pension from the DSP. On top of that if you die before 65 there's a greater chance of you having being in receipt of some form of benefits be it Disability, Jobseekers etc.

So it makes complete sense for the DSP to be informed of all deaths when over 90% of people dying will have been receiving something from them.

Either paid work on some sort of State-sponsored scheme.

Or else, if it's clear that they are not seeking work, move them off JSA.

I know of a postmaster was caught in the early 1990s claiming pensions for people who had died. At least 5 people and one had died 14 years previously. A pillar of the community to boot.

Regarding checks/visits, much easier to have a proper death registration system. Have one and check it regualarly!

    No time-limit on JSA.
