Is it worth bothering ticking the box for permission?

Just give the same reason I gave the FO when I ticked the box on my last rifle application. "I don't really need one but it'd look rather Gucci on the end of the barrel" 🤐😝🤐

Do the humane deer dispatch course when IDS offer it again.Would give you a good reason for one possibly.😉

Are you allowed to license a .22 pistol for humane dispatch?

    No

I would "argue" yes, you can.

Licensing a pistol only requires that you are a member of an authorised range. The law, afaik, says nothing about only using it on a range and if you tick hunting/vermin/other on the FCA1 and it goes through then you're entitled to use it as you wish.

.22 has dropped enough farmyard animals over the years for slaughter or disabled. You are up close & personal dispatching an animal not hitting it from over 100 meters.A .22 or a 9mm at less than 10 feet is going to do the same job to a deers skull and brain.

The only current reason you can licence a .22lr pistol in Rep of Ireland is for the sole purpose of target shooting on an authorised section 4 range.

You could apply for a suitable captive bolt or single shot pistol for the purpose of humane dispatch, these firearms are not granted with moderators and fire a single shot.

A .22lr cartridge will not meet the minimum energy requirements to humanley dispatch a deer in accordance with current legislation.

A shovel will also do the same job...whats the point here...??

    Where is that written?

Doesn't have to. You can dispatch a wounded or injured Deer by any means. Also doesn't apply solely to Deer.

The requirements you're referring to aren't for humane dispatch, they're for hunting. There's no minimum calibre or fps requirements for humane dispatch. In the Commissioner's guidelines, they recommend a .32 ACP Cashman pistol and it is not legal to hunt with that calibre as it falls under the fps requirements ergo .22lr being a legal dispatch round.

Perhaps this is a little bit of a tangent from the initial post, but how would a license or authorisation be issued for a .32 pistol for humane dispatch? Surely they would be restricted short firearms, and hence not able to be licensed. Is this just another case of AGS playing legislature again or is there a legal exemption for these pistols?

Not to mind them being described as"single-shot revolvers" as described in the guidelines.🙄 Again, poorly written descriptions of firearms. "Converted to" added to such a description would be a great help. I'd guess there are/were maybe a few of such guns with some vets here. So this was a cover for those out there? But most vets I think nowadays use lethal injection,or maybe a captive bolt killer, which is still a risky deal as they need contact with the animal's skull and can still rear up or charge. Having a firearm still gives you standoff distance. Don't think trying to dispatch a stag with a captive bolt killer would be a good plan.

Also, it does mention that silencers could be used by vets working at racecourses, so the concept of "humane dispatch" with the GP within a certain area with a silencer doesn't seem to be alien to them as a good reason.

The powers that be must think its a given that a bullet will dispatch cleanly every time? You'd look well if an animal flinched as you pulled the trigger and took its jaw. It would then be in attack mode while your fumbling around looking to reload another round into you single shot revolver.. Its decided that the person with you is fair game and they'd be gored before you could say "ticked boo"

Yes I have the S on my handgun licence But the barrel isn't threaded, so I can't use one.

Where would ye get. 32 ACP pistol or a revolver ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,023 ✭✭✭✭Grizzly 45

In a collectors gunshop more than likely these days. Becomeing an obscure calibre that has been succeeded by 9mm and 380 even, in compact pistols.

That's why I feel the guidelines were written in a broad sense on this point and named this particular type of gun[?]as there might have been or are still a few of them around? The fact that you can get in the UK any pistol or revolver of any calibre converted to a humane dispatcher of two shots, and licensed to you if you have the justifiable need for it as a professional, was missed here.
