    124 km/h gust at Mace Head. 3pm.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Just walked down to mother and the wind is ferocious. Its only 200 metres down the road but I was nearly knocked off my feet twice in the gusts. And this is only the start of it. I'd say the NW could see their worst storm tonight all winter. Sea is getting wild.

That squall line that left Ireland had got seriously active over the UK as I type.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,993 ✭✭✭Storm 10

Unreal squalls in Galway especially during showers

Gusting 88.5kmh at my station in Arklow

    10min average 47kmh WNW

As I commented above, this is far nastier than Eunice here in Bantry Bay. The whole house is shaking when we get regular huge gusts.

    Fastnet Lighthouse twitter at 15.32: Avg Wind:62kts (115kph), Gust:79kts (146 kph), Wind Dir:328 °(NW), 15:32:00

I'm a big fan of Met Eireann, but this worse than yellow.

Much worse in this neck of the woods than the last 2 named storms.

    Co. Leitrim.

Temp has dropped like a stone.

Gust of 101.4kmh just now in Arklow Westerly

Upgraded warnings are probably required as the gradient is predicted to increase considerably overnight and even so, widespread gusts in the 100-120 km/hr range now. For example on the GFS the gradient from 00z to 03z is almost 50% stronger across parts of the northwest. Perhaps that linear extrapolation can be partly cancelled out by time of day and momentum transfer behind the squall line feature that developed with the cold front. However, I would say possible red alert conditions incoming for parts of Donegal and Connacht and more widespread orange level alert conditions than currently operational.

Will be upgrading my own forecast shortly.

It has calmed down somewhat here in Meath since the rain cleared and we are avoiding all the showers. Lots of showers to the north and south of me, but I seem to be in a dry lane stretching from Meath to Castlebar.

Was hoping we wouldn't be heading for upgraded warnings. It's fairly wild already here in Mayo so going into red would be scary.

Storm Franklin vs Storm Eunice for wind gusts and mean wind speeds as of 1600. Franklin is definitely windier on a national scale than Eunice was. Mace Head had red sustained winds the past hour with 83 km/h.

Midnight before the strongest winds come so by morning that chart will favour Franklin even more, donegal is definitely a red warning.

Galway high tide is 19.50, Lahinch 20.30, both near the 5m mark, so both may well see some over topping

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,811 ✭✭✭Dazler97

Oh wow didn't know this was here just went into trending and here I am, I'm preparing for this storm, my estate is flooded can't leave unless in welly boots

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,993 ✭✭✭Storm 10

Hit 96km during a vicious shower in Galway City Rescue 115 unable to land at UHG due wind and landed at the football pitches in the Claddagh was on a tasking from Aran Islands great life saving work.

  • Registered Users Posts: 442 ✭✭Donegal Ken

I am surprised that they haven't upgraded the Marine warning at least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,679 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

Maybe more like an emphatic orange than red but touching on red in a few exposed locations, anyway, wind direction will veer slightly from current, like 270-280 to 300-310 deg. That may change local results too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,601 ✭✭✭corsav6

I'm more exposed from the SW but still 4 miles from the coast and 55m ASL.

Last few gusts really packed a punch there, not looking forward to the night.

Thanks for all the updates MT.

Showers are packing a punch, gust of 98km/h recently at Waterford Airport.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,618 ✭✭✭✭road_high

Very gusty here in Kilkenny. Feels stronger than last Fridays storm especially in the gusts

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,696 ✭✭✭SleetAndSnow

Quite a few planes being diverted from cork airport due to the winds

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,053 ✭✭✭redsteveireland

Glad I got off the motorway in Galway before that last shower, just in the door and a big gust sent the 2 bins down the garden and is testing my bike shed build skills.

Seems wilder today in West Dublin compared to Eunice, but not so according to @sryanbruen table (which is much appreciated btw - I always love your tables and charts).

For Dublin the yellow warning will be gone by 9am Monday but marine warning remains until 2pm.

Is that likely too windy for a walk out to Poolbeg lighthouse around midday on Monday? Genuine question as I've only ever been out in calm weather, and would enjoy a blustery walk, but at the same time have no intention of doing anything foolish or risky.

Any coastal area needs to be treated with extreme caution in weather like today tbh

A bit surprised how strong the winds are with this one, and "only" a yellow warning. A falling tree has hit a car in Cork City.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,570 ✭✭✭Tyrone212

Gusts getting close to red category

    Mace head 126kmh

    Knock Airport 124kmh

  • Registered Users Posts: 88 ✭✭Condor24

This is like the storms I used to know and love as a kid. It's quite quiet in between showers but once they hit you can hear the wind coming from half a mile away very strong, with sleety snow hitting in sheets between squalls. Classic set up. Then ten minutes or so later, all quiet again.

Looking rather stormy tonight, my orange warning in in effect from 7pm till 7am

Same here in Newport, a bit of a calm and then you can hear the rumble coming from a distance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,075 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

    Nothing much in Cork

Yellow about right, obviously looks much worse in the Northwest though I still think high end orange is sufficient

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,233 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

That's another clear upgrade from AROME, very strong winds here in Kerry, starting to howl now.

Very strong winds across the country overnight, treat it like an Orange warning and even though the NW is an Orange I would think treat it like a red, wont be much difference, top end Orange at least. Definetly Red along the coasts.

Could easily make the whole country Orange level .

Every time there's a vicious shower of hail the wind is gusting over 100kph in Sligo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,245 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Just has had a light hail and sleet shower with a few snowflakes in North Dub.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88,574 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

Take Care, I hope all goes well

West and North West looks to be getting hit the worse

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,570 ✭✭✭Tyrone212

It's worth remembering to check in on elderly neighbours in this weather. I just popped in to to check on my neighbour, she's 87 and lives alone. I asked her did she need any shopping done, she did. So I handed her my shopping list as well. No point the both of us going out in that.

Cant understand there problem updating warnings and leaving it last minute. Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim warrent a red for layer and probably will see stronger winds recorded that the southwest on Friday morning.

    Very nasty gusts out already

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 244 ✭✭Thepillowman

Calmed down a good bit now in East Clare but it was one rough day ,windiest of all the last 3 storms.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,601 ✭✭✭corsav6

Hopefully it stays relatively calm for you for the eve. No real let up here in Mayo. A few scary gusts but hopefully the wind direction shelters us a bit.

    Max gust in Arklow 101.8

Two gusts in quick succession above 101kmh at 343pm and 344pm

    Gust of 90kmh last hour

And we are on the East Coast!

  • Registered Users Posts: 287 ✭✭ascophyllum

Doubt we'll see red now after the 6pm news, doesn't change much as anyone that's out and about for the evening is out now probably.

Very surprising there isn't even a red marine warning, the swell/wind combo doesn't get redder than this! And it also has the effect of letting people in coastal areas know they're basically in a red zone.

    Mace head 68 knots!!

Ya, bad gusts here in Sligo town. Nearly as bad as storm Barra back in December.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,570 ✭✭✭Tyrone212

    Newport and Finner both 119kmh.

  • Registered Users Posts: 88 ✭✭Condor24

I will say this is an inland phenomenon. By the coast it will be a constant gale. Gone quiet now but more showers packing in so it could be an interesting night.
