What was the scandal about Trudeau when he was a teacher? Something about a girl and an NDA? Heard it alluded to a few times on the live streams.

You misunderstand. This is exactly how the Emergencies Act works. The Government are allowed to invoke certain powers, in the meantime there is a debate and a vote to pass the invoking of the Act. It essentially realises that immediate action is required in some cases and waiting for a vote to pass would take too long. Parliament was suspended on Friday with the agreement of all parties and on the advice of security services. They were back debating on Saturday, will be debating on Sunday with a vote scheduled for Monday at 8pm ET. Also there's a mandatory review of the invoking of the Act to review whether it was justified or not and all parties in parliament will have representation.

Liberals got 32.62% of the vote in the last election. Conservatives got 33.74% of the vote but Liberals got 160 seats vs 119 seats for Conservatives. Liberals are currently ruling with a minority government as they are allowed to do. They would fall if the Finance Bill or Crown Speech did not pass.

The Canadian/US decision here is of those choices during COVID that really had alternatives. Like others, including the shambolic UK who were on par with the US at times, we chose not to go that way. Would they and others do it again? Very probably as it's a more popular instant response than the slow drip approach of a please vaccinate campaign. Ultimately these protests attracted those with very different ideas but that really can't be avoided in modern life.

Here they are threatening to break the window to get into the cafe and arrest the owners.

Their crime? Serving food and drink to people involved in a protest against mandates that no longer apply here, in a country with a higher vaccination rate and a lower case rate.

Worth noting that while the government "suggested" that businesses close for the duration of the protest (and later pointed to the closure of businesses "by protests" as a reason to invoke emergency powers), there was no legal order in place that prevented business owners from operating in Ottawa.

These emergency powers should be subject to cross-party agreement before invocation.

    This is tyranny.

And now they are suggesting selling off the trucks they towed away. Stealing property from citizens and taking away their livelihoods. All for exercising their right to protest. The Canadian government has completely lost their minds. What next? Send the protesters off to the gulag?

Listen to the last hour of the latest podcast with Joe Rogan and Maajid Nawaz....it will scare the bejaysus out of you and if it doesn't, you still have some time to wake up, but not much. There are dark days ahead.

I personally believe that all western countries are going to follow Canada's lead if they are successful in suppressing the dissent there at the moment...it'll be every country's playbook at some point...thank god Ireland is a little backwater hanging off the edge of europe so we may be one of the last it reaches...hopefully...

    But it's coming

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,587 ✭✭✭circular flexing

Canada is not suppressing dissent, there's still plenty of protests happening with little to no arrests

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/bc-vaccine-mandate-protests-feb-19-1.6358397

    etc...

The biggest different is these protests are not turning into an occupation like the one in Ottawa.

I mean, if you were told multiple times over the course of a couple of days that your truck was illegally parked and to clear the area or you would be arrested and then instead of moving it you allow yourself to be arrested, what would expect to happen?

I've not heard the podcast and while I don't agree with the protesters, the crackdown especially regarding the banking is pretty scary and more worryingly has legitimatized such tactics going forward because when a liberal nation like Canada does such a thing, why should't a ring wing type authoritarian do similar with Extinction Rebellion etc?

I'd expect to pay the fee and retrieve my vehicle. I wouldn't expect the government to seize and sell my property without due process but maybe that's just me

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,124 ✭✭✭✭JRant

Many won't even be able to pay the fine now as their accounts are frozen. It's a lovely little trap JT has set. Freeze the accounts and then the vehicles making it near impossible for them to get them back. That article in the WashPo 8 years ago about JT looks almost prophetic.

It was pathetic. You can see the police outside debating on whether they could smash in the glass.

All their number badges covered up too.

They are back tomorrow, presumably with a warrant, according to the dialogue.

Remaining vehicles finally removed. Several hundred arrests in total. The world will definitely mourn the 0.2% of Canadian truckers who took part in illegal activities to protest free vaccines and minor inconveniences

Heartening to see the large protests continuing in support all over Canada.

Also glad to see the residents and business owners filing class action lawsuit against these morons.

Would appear they are enjoying the same level of support they received in Ottawa.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,124 ✭✭✭✭JRant

Damn straight, they should sue the local government for the mess they've made of this thing.

In January 2021 Nawaz signed an open letter to the FBI and other Western intelligence agencies asking them to investigate the possibility that COVID-19 lockdowns were a "global fraud" promulgated by the Chinese Communist Party intended to "impoverish the nations" that implemented them

    I'd rather not, thanks.

These people are mostly just an extension of the anti-vaxx anti-mask anti-lockdown 5G loon crowd that have been protesting all over the world since the pandemic started. This time they had some truckers, so they could illegally block roads, piss more people off and get more coverage.

The OP is listening to 2 conspiracy theorists "scare the bejaysus" out of him and encouraging others to do similar.

I think there is quite a few people who are never going to be able to dig themselves out of the self imposed rabbit hole.

Here is the man himself (not the thumbnail) If you forward to 1:23 in the video.

I think it's a bunch of crazy decisions in both sides. If you block and bridge or cause disruption in a city centre for days on end you can't expect there won't be financial penalties . Act like jerks get trested like jerks. Conversely the government were probably going to remove the mandates soon anyway so why go overboard with the cops and freezing bank accounts.

Funny how when it comes to countries like Russia, China, Iran, Venezuela, we are taught to recognise their tyranny through the use of repressive tactics such as when dissent from establishment and orthodoxy is censored, protests against the state are outlawed and dissenters are harshly punished with no due process (freezing of bank accounts).

We denounce these tactics when applied by countries the west has an interest in disparaging but applaud when the same tactics are deployed against our political adversaries.

So putin & trudeau & the argentinian primie minister are all Wef graduates and in favour of freezing and /or taking your money in the bank . Well its not rocket science take out your own money and invest in Gold & stocks, silver is good too. **** the banks they have not been serving us for a long time cutting their branches and staff making us constantly deal with machines **** them,.

Being forced from your job isn't a minor inconvenience.

Don't know what planet some boardsies are on but having your livelihood taken away is a big deal anywhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,160 ✭✭✭✭Dohnjoe

Calm down, it's an order that's only in place for 30 days and mainly to tackle the source of the funding. Also banks provide a service, they may choose not to provide that service to certain individuals (violent/far-right/etc)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,160 ✭✭✭✭Dohnjoe

These "protesters" have demonstrated they have no problem causing other people to lose jobs.
