"Separated from Kyiv control for years". So you are saying you're OK with this for areas previously carved out by Russia? So you will be OK with the death and destruction this leads to right? You would be OK with talking to the family of the people who loose their lives in this as "you were separated from Kyiv control for years so it's not an issue".

Imagine if Canada or Mexico allowed a Russian-led/funded coalition of forces to be based in their territory.

Did Russia veto Ukraine's request for peacekeepers to those areas previously?

Ah cool. So you will be the mouthpiece for the great new USSR. No, NATO, an alliance to try and prevent wars is the bad one. They've annexed "nothing", so they are truly the aggressors here.

If any shells land in DNR zones that should be the trigger to take Mariupol. Eventually moving to Odessa. Closing off Ukraine to the Black sea will be of strategic importance to Russia even after Putin is gone.

Just been looking at episode 2 of The Rise of the Nazis on BBC2 to-night. It centered on Stalingrad, not all that far from Ukraine. But what really stood out was the weakness of Dictators, who just won't listen to professional advice and are architects of their own downfall. Quite an eerie feeling watching it to-night.

Imagine how paranoid and lonely you must feel. No wonder dictators go off their rocker.

amazing how putin never mentioned russian peace keepers in his speech tonight.....

wonder as one previous poster mentionned what russian people make of all this from their 20+ year benevolent dictator..

Feel so sorry for the people of Ukraine.

Suppose what were all wondering is whether they will stick to the current front lines as the border or secure the whole region.

A lot of posters here claimed Putin would not do anything like this. They should hang their hands in shame.

I was one of those; I didn't think an invasion in any part was likely.

    I was completely wrong.

    .

Most of us though Ukraine would say they don't want to join NATO. They didn't, Russia said it was a red line.

92.3% of people voted for Ukrainian independence.

    Russia are a disgrace.

We should send in German troops as peacekeepers for rest of Ukraine

Looking at the US Sanctions on Donetsk and Luhansk, they seem to be aimed at anyone who would aid and abet the two renegade regimes. So Russian firms or Western firms with connections to Russian firms should watch out. Also this is just a very preliminary measure aimed specifically at what happened to-day. It is not remotely the full measure of sanctions which are very likely if Putin continues on his present path.

It might look weak at first sight, but it minimises the scope for Russia to play the part of innocent victim of US and NATO aggression.

No sanctions now or in the future will work. Russians have become accustomed to going without, for a long, long time. And Putin and his cronies likely have billions salted away so they couldn't give a shite.

Of course the huge danger here is the West arming Ukraine to the teeth, Putin's massive army then becomes entrenched - after the initial weeks of the conflict - in a war that will likely descend into guerilla warfare and go on for years. Massive casualties on both sides, soldiers and civilians alike.

Except... I don't see Putin ever accepting defeat, backing down or enduring the wrath of his own people when tens of thousands of sons are killed. He's the milder, devious form of madman, as opposed to Hitler's in your face kind of madman. His itchy trigger finger will be engaged quicker than a toilet after you've had a vindaloo, and he will seek his place in history as the lunatic who launched nuclear armageddon on the world. Biden had best make sure his key is readily to hand. So should every other nuclear country.

Now where was I?..... oh yes ..... googling nuclear fallout shelters.

English translation is: Klimov said that the Russian Federation recognizes the LNR and the DNR within the borders actually established now

So, this could be some sort of good news I suppose. Russia says (if you can believe a word they say, its dubious) but that they recognise the border as it is today. But would not be surprised if they launch an offensive to sieze the southern city of Mariupol

I expect a piecemeal approach, but who really knows. The logic would be that you weather one outrage before moving on to the next. That's the great thing about the international news cycle from Russia's perspective. Attention spans are short. People move on to other things pretty quickly. The DNR and LNR situations become, if not accepted, 'normalised'. Just not that big of a deal to the international community, just like Crimea. No one does much of real consequence about it. Western leaders make some speeches about sanctions. Some people on Facebook put Ukraine flag overlays on a picture of themselves drinking with the lads. Same old, same old.

I have no issue at all, these regions joining Russia if that’s what the people there desire. Ukraine and the West have problem with it.

Other parts of the country wish to have nothing to do with Russia. Russia occupies all the way to Kyiv this is a bit different since the people are not friendly to Russia.

Military offensive is an actual war. . I understand Russia's mindset that Nato is a hostile alliance and have to take defensive measures here. I hope Putin respects the rest of the territory is hostile and stops here. Invasion of unfriendly Ukraine will only make the world an unsafe place, nobody wants that.

Bolshevik policy was to kill everyone who challenged them, disagreed or was even possibly a threat.

In the context of the Ukraine it was especially murderous from Day one.

In this he is probably complaining that the Ukraine wasn't set up then as a region of Russia, not as it's own entity in the USSR.

How are these old people with nothing to loose given such power???

They literally have nothing to loose as they could die any day.

They want to be remembered in the history books.

When a State orders in its troops against the will of another sovereign nation, it's typically referred to as an invasion.

amazing that putin with a country that is four times geographically the size of the EU and with 7000 nuclear war heads should feel threatened.... and want to grab even more land for mother russia ... when he is really going to stop.... surely everyone in eastern europe must be asking themselves that now..

putins assertion that ukraine is not really a proper country is most worrying at present..
