Don’t think Ferguson has played enough senior football as of yet. His age is less of a concern.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,797 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

It's too early to be looking at Ferguson for the senior team. He's only made one senior start, and that was in the EFL Trophy which is basically an u23 competition for Premier League teams. I'd keep him in the u21's for now, he'd be able to provide needed competition for Kayoade and Whelan.

Next season could be interesting though. It's clear that he's learned all he can at u23 level for Brighton. Given that he's unlikely to get many senior starts at Brighton, I think he could benefit from a loan. He's very young still, but I think a half season loan to the likes of MK Dons or a similar club would give him some good experience of senior football at a level where he should be effective.

Would be good to see him get a loan like Kavanagh did this season. Was good to see him get 20mins but I'd say he won't be getting that very often and mightn't have got it if they weren't 2-0 down and being outplayed by Burnley.

A big shame as the page did great work covering Irish football, and think it was actually the lad behind that page which helped put the FAI in touch with Bagan about switching to Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

The FAI really are a horror show when it comes to making contact with eligible players. You look at lads like Jonjo Kenny and you'd wonder if he has been sounded out at all. Other players like Anthony Gordon are eligible. Doubtful he's switch but who knows. Should be asked anyway. You wouldn't be confident they are being approached.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,991 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

I know they were the first person to make it publicly known he was eligible and was in the process of wanting to switch. Probably putting two and two together, and forgot Mick was the manager at the time and seems Bagan does mention Mick when talking about it.

If Jonjoe Kenny wanted to play for Ireland he'd be playing for Ireland. Hasn't been eligible for the U21s for the last three years come the summer. Robinson had started the process of switching a few months after he had become overage for the U21s the year before.

Similar to Bamford I'd say one England cap would mean more to him than 50 Ireland caps. Trent Alexander was brought into the England squad while Kenny was still playing U21s as back up to Trippier. Now you also have Reece James breaking into the squad. So isn't like England would be sorry to lose him but he probably still holds out hope he can get a cap or two.

Good time for O'Shea to come back with Omobamidele being injured and Duffy probably going to be on the bench more often with Brighton using a back four now.

Could see Robinson possibly having to look for a loan. Don't think Bruce is gonna fancy him much next season. Hopefully for us he pushes for a loan if he's not seen as a starter.

Coventry with a nice assist tonight. Outside of the foot through ball for Watson. Parrot putting in another 90mins tonight. Would like to maybe see him get a shot in March up front again rather than push Robinson up into CF. Even Will Keane start over Parrott against Belgium and Parrott against Lithuania.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,991 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Better clip of Coventry's assist last night. MK Dons fans can't stop raving about him. Might have had to drop down a league but Cullen was similar when Bolton dropped him ten games into his first season in the Championship. West Ham brought him back to the club in January and didn't loan him out again until the summer to League One Charlton.

Hopefully for him and us he pushes to return to MK Dons next season to further continue his career and doesn't try to give it one more go at West Ham.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,797 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Robinson needs to leave permanently. He wasn't suited to Valerian's style, and first impressions are that he won't be suited to Bruce either. Everything at West Brom is so slow in the build-up and too predictable with all the long balls. The fact Bruce is relying on the likes of Andy Carroll tells you all you need to know. With him in the team, the transitions in play just slow to a crawl, the exact opposite of what Robinson thrives on. Quite frankly amazed that West Brom sacked Valerian to go with a such similar manager.

It's great to see Coventry doing well, that ball he played yesterday was a peach. We know he's a solid midfielder who doesn't make mistakes and has the legs to compete, hopefully he can add some assists/goals to take him to the next level. At the same time, as we've seen all too often, the step up from League 1 to the Championship is considerable.

Yeah situation at West Brom is a strange one. Didn't back Valerian in the summer with money but left him spend 8m on a new player a couple of weeks before sacking him. Was surprised they didn't come in for Hendrick as he'd have been an upgrade on what they had in midfield though that probably would have been a no go once Bruce took over.

For Molumby's sake I hope his transfer isn't made permanent because he'll slide further down the pecking order next season. Similar it would be nice to see some teams show interest in O'Shea come the summer once he's back up to speed and hopefully impressing again.

Step up to Championship is a big step for some players and clubs. Best second tier league around and it's hard to judge but would rank high amongst some first tier leagues. If MK Dons get promoted Coventry could find the move easier already playing in a team he's settled with. Similar to Cullen and his time with Charlton compared to his loan with Bolton after impressing with Bradford for a season and half.

Festy, Knight, and Cashin start tonight for Derby while McNamara starts for Millwall.

Hendrick keeps his place in the QPR midfielder while Dunne starts as usual.

Egan makes his 150th appearance for Sheffield United while Hourihane remains on the bench since Fleck has returned from injury. Darragh Lenihan starts as usual.

McGuinness and Bagan start for Cardiff. Kioso remains on the bench for Luton.

    Jimmy dunne!!!!

    Cap the chap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,991 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Would like to see Dunne brought into the squad in March. Another option to play in the centre of the three if Duffy is unavailable rather than having to push Egan back in there.

Festy taken off at half time. Hopefully it's not injury related and just tactical.

    Matt Doherty scores for Spurs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,991 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Gets an assist for Spurs second but that goal was all Kulusevski's brilliance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,991 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Should have made it 3-0 and after the game tweeted needing to improve his end product. Has really pulled his socks up the last two months after losing his place just before the last international break.

Was the most fouled player, won 8/11 duels, and had 31/38 passes on target. Should hopefully see game time during the next international break.

The fans have been raving about him after the second or third game. Talking about he's a type of midfielder that they didn't have in awhile and talking about how they hope they could hang onto next season.

Think it's safe to assume he won't be a starter for West Ham. Would be great if MK Dons are promoted and he returns again next season either on loan or full time. Hopefully he keeps in touch with Cullen as a move abroad could suit him if options are limited whenever he does leave West Ham.

He's more suited to a team that tries to play ball. While there's options at the top of the championship it becomes more agricultural towards the bottom. A couple of seasons abroad before returning back to the UK, something I think Cullen will do this summer or next summer.

Didn't watch him today, but I am very impressed with Parrott with regard to his work ethic and professionalism. Even when things weren't going well for him at Ipswich and he had that fraud of a manager Paul Cook hanging him out to dry in the press, he never went missing. Thankfully he's in a better team now and is having a big impact, even if we don't see it in terms of goals. I was saying it a while back, but I really do get a McGoldrick vibe from him. Like McGoldrick, he's not prolific in front of goal, but he also has the same ability on the ball to find space, to put himself about the pitch, to willingly get on the ball and make things happen. He's still young enough that the finishing aspect of his game can improve.

Ben Brereton has had his breakthrough season this year at 22 after a few years of playing well but not being prolific. Not saying Parrott can be as good as him, merely highlighting that sometimes it takes time for a striker to develop their finishing and composure in front of goal.

Doherty brilliant today. Great to see.

Following the likes of Connolly and Parrott since they were playing underage or PL2 with their clubs just shows the huge gulf in standard between that and real adult football.

Both were prolific at that level and it's probably why expectations were so crazy high for them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,991 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Kenny said it himself when he named his first squad and he called up Parrott when McGoldrick was carrying an injury. He got more stick when he ignored Obafemi for Parrott but said he called Parrott into the squad because he was the closest player we had with the same characteristics as McGoldrick.

Good to see Kelleher starting the cup final. Barring injuries or suspensions could be his final game of the season for Liverpool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,991 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Forgot about the FA Cup, but he's technically not the designated keeper for that competition though so could be a chance Allison starts. Though it being Norwich and the return leg against Inter next week should see him start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,359 ✭✭✭henke

Fair play to Kelleher. Some nerve to stick the last penalty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,991 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Probably the only player to play in two Kennedy Cup tournaments, once as a striker and then as a goalkeeper.

Delighted for Kelleher. Brilliant stuff. Incredible to think he is possibly our 3rd choice keeper and just won a major trophy. Some competition between himself, travers.

I would have him second. He would probably be our number 1 only he was missing through injury when Bazanu got his chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,701 ✭✭✭Gusser09

I'm not sure. I think it's really hard to overlook one of the most in from keepers currently in the UK. Bazunu and Travers both playing 40+ games a season will stand to them.

A number of the FA's such as the English, Swiss, Danish etc have announced that they intend to not play Russia in any Games.

How long before he FAI hop on board?

The FAI are more likely to offer Lansdowne as a neutral venue to the Russians and try and rename it the Gazprom Arena. They are not known for their moral courage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,991 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Yup, he looks more suited to how Kenny wants the goalkeeper to play than Travers. If he hadn't missed March's games he'd be our No1.

Signs for Northampton Town until 2023 who are currently 2nd in League Two. Has been training with Northampton the last few weeks and manager says could be loaned out in the coming weeks to gain first team football.

Christ, I hate FAI as much as next man, but what in God's name do you expect them to do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,645 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

It's interesting to contrast Kelleher and Travers, and how they progress over time.

They are different, from what I've seen and heard Travers is a good traditional catch and save goalie, not great with the ball at his feet, while Kelleher is a brilliant footballer, but imho (and this includes yesterday) isn't a great shot stopper. Bazunu is probably a better balance of both sides. Be interesting to see how they get on over time.

Lovely to have two areas (GK and CB) we don't have to worry about for a long time anyway - gives us a good strong base long term to build from.

Goal for Christie, looked the best of the Irish lads tonight and deserved his goal.

What the hell happened to WBA, couldn't believe when I saw they were mid table. I remember them being top at some point when the table settled.. they must have barely won a game in two/three months now.

Good article here on Odubeko. Looks like he is starting to mature a little so that's good. Hopefully the loan move to Doncaster pushes him on a bit too. Playing games can only help.

Yeh sure young lads are impressionable at that age. He jas cleared it up now. Hopefully he can forge a career at Championship or in a european league. Lets see.

Watched the 5 Irish lads in action tonight in the Cardiff/Derby game.

McGuinness started a bit shakey but definitely grew into the game as time went on. Very little got by him and he was hardly troubled in the second half. He's not the most convincing on the ball, but he's a very good defender and was mostly dominant tonight.

Bagan had a tough time up against Ebosele who had the beating of him at will, could nearly say Ebosele had "Bagan on toast" 😂 Luckily for Bagan, Ebosele didn't have the end product to punish him. Bagan is definitely throwing off vibes of being a player who's better going forward than defending.

Knight was deployed on the wing again for Derby and worked his socks off as usual. Unfortunately the wide position just doesn't look natural to him. He has no pace to beat a defender, which means he always needs to take a touch and tuck in, which blunts the attack. Would really prefer to see him played more central.

Cashin had a really good game in central defence for Derby. He's not the biggest, but he looks to be a bit more composed than say the likes of McGuinness. He had the most amount of touches of any player on the pitch tonight, which highlights just how comfortable he is with the ball at feet. Did very well tonight and was at no fault for the goal.

Ebosele had a decent game. As I said earlier, he had the beating of Bagan, but his end product was often poor. With that said, he did set up the best chance Derby had when he crossed in for one of their lads who was very unlucky to be denied. If this lad can just improve his composure, he's going to be some player.

Cashin would narrowly have been my pick of the bunch, they all did well though.

McClean scored again tonight, but will make headlines for this. Madness, he's going to miss 3 games because of this straight red with Wigan in the driving seat to get automatic promotion.

Is Aaron Connolly injured tonight? Not in the squad and came on against United so not cup tied.
