Russian build up along Ukraine

Mixed reports that Russia hasn’t achieved all of its day 1 objectives, the special forces/airborne assault on the airport at Kiev was overrun after heavy fighting and is back in Ukrainian hands as of tonight, reports Russian forces have withdrawn from their attack on Sumy and will resume attacks tomorrow. But strong gains in the South out of Crimea and they are moving through Chernobyl which is only a short distance from the capital (side news reports at least some damage was done to waste storage during the battle). Suggestions that Ukraine has lost control of the air, be interesting to see if that shows itself tomorrow. Russia has taken military losses in pushing this, but given their size can take them as the main forces haven’t moved in strength yet.

Bit of news for Romania, one of the Ukrainian islands only 30km from their coast has fallen after resistance from its squad of Ukrainians, long term as its close to a NATO member, I’d imagine that will be fortified and used against Romania.

Edit: And the Russians just admitted to “misfiring” a missile at a Turkish ship in the Black Sea.

The javelins etc? Far better fired in open Country, not ideal at all for urban combat, you could just as easy blow up a house.

Reports tonight that a Russian IL-76 with a company of Paratroopers was shot down by Ukrainian SAMs around Kyiv, heavy losses for them if true.

AP is now citing US sources to say 2 IL-76's were shot down overnight, that's a heavy blow to the Russian elite military.

Statements after the fact from Moscow that Putin ordered the suspension of advance yesterday to open the window for negotiations.

Absolute horse manure as usual from the Kremlin, they are being badly held up by Western anti-armour and anti-air weaponry employed to defend Kiev and they don't like it.

The West need to funnel as much heavy gear as can be mustered through corridors from Poland, Slovakia and Romania, giving the Ukrainians an endless supply located in the Western third of their territory to be able to deploy to any conflict zone. And it should no longer be defensive weapons either.

As the Russians are beginning to occupy strategic locations, Ukraine need rockets and artillery to bombard them out of existence and both kill the Russians and remove the strategic site. At this stage they should be bombing all their own Airports in the North and East to prevent air bridges being formed.

I think Ireland should send some anti tank missiles to Ukraine...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,465 ✭✭✭sparky42

Wouldn't disagree with that along with the RBS 70s, I'm sure if we got them to Poland they would be happy to drive them over the border. Wonder how many we have in stores?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,799 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

I'd happily send them the lot, but we aren't going to do that.

There has been a big donor conference organised by the Brits, hopefully we have committed as much non-lethal and medical aid as possible.

Besides, whatever we could ship over wouldn't hold a candle to the NATO supplies already on hand in the eastern member States.

Every little helps, and the Javelin is pretty good.

Every single anti tank weapon All our mortars and 105s along with every single missile and round we have for them should be shipped out to poland estonia or romania asap. We dont need them tomorrow like ukraine and we can always buy more

Lads as much as we may emotionally desire to give them all the help we can, exporting free weapons en masse is not consistent with neutrality (which I know is a nebulous concept at the best of times).

While I acknowledge the Government could act on it tomorrow and be in violation of nothing in particular, I just don't see it even remotely likely.

And to be fair, if anything, it only adds to the urgent need for a serious and no-holds-barred public debate on the Defence policy of this State, to reflect the sense of justice of the people, rather than that of just two parties who have made a murky and undefined neutrality their custom and practice for the last 85 years.

Meanwhile Russian strategic nuclear forces have been placed on combat alert.

    Which is nice.

Ireland's nominal and notional military neutrality ended today, 27th Feb 2022.

    End of debate.

If we are interested in preserving our way of life how can we be neutral when the likes of Putin are out there. I think we should be part of an EU Army.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,507 ✭✭✭AyeGer

I’m aware there is no EU Army Dohvolle, which is why I referred to an EU Army and not the EU Army. It would probably be a better option for a small country like Ireland though if we do move on from neutrality.

EU High Rep Borrell reports the EU intention to give fighter jets to Ukraine.

Presumably that means ex-soviet stock from Poland, Hungary etc as there is no possible way the Ukrainians could be worked up on Western types from scratch.

Either way, we are absolutely not in Kansas anymore.

Technically we aren't involved in the arms part, we are contributing to the non lethal package while "constructively Abstaining" from the Lethal package.

It's always the Crisis moments that the EU moves so quickly. And yeah it will be the Eastern European jets that will be sent, ironically Russians have in some cases been the ones keeping them flying up till now.

The Government are still polishing the Neutrality cup by making our contribution to the non-lethal side of the EU package to Ukraine. We are donating for support items like medical aid and body armour. While today, at Dublin Airport, young Ukrainians left wives and family to fight for their Country. It's possibly the Mil budget that keeps us holding the coats at the big match. We need to look at the Map, we are a huge chunk of the approaches to EUROPE.

Since we arent giving any anti tank weapons we should at least give the ukrainians that are returning home training on the javelins so they can train there fellow country men and women

Us not being neutral won't stop a Nuclear device wiping us out.

I think the DF only fire one of these a year as the cost about 170,000 dollars a pop.

Anybody knows what site to donate?, I went to Irish Red Cross but there is no option to donate to Ukraine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 243 ✭✭ancientmariner

Prices may vary depending on strategic need. Some quote Rounds at 80,000 usd each. The Ukrainians bought 37 launchers and 210 rounds a couple of years ago. There are anti-tanks available at 5000 USD and rounds as cheap as a Dollar. RPG launchers 200 USD and grenades 20USD.

The latest 500 javelins won't cost UKRAINE anything upfront and may have a use or return deal. The spare Fighter Jets will probably need nationalising and accompanied armed with volunteer pilots.

Talking about Nuclear fallout. Check that you have the pack of medicine issued by DOH to cover the requirements for The National Emergency Plan for Nuclear Accidents. There is a pack for each family member. I think it's an Iodine product and Putin is accident prone? They were issued nationwide some years ago.
