Probably the best "Covid is Yesterday" piece comes from Gergal Bowers in todays Irish Indo. It's a well crafted piece,in which you can sense almost a great sigh of.........well,not quite relief...but rather a sad prolonged au revoir to an old accquaintance...One can feel his reluctance to part company with the mask, representing,as it does the badge of compliance, decency & concern.

It is almost as if Fergal sees the return of ordinary Life as something to be suspicious of.....🤔

Sadly,Fergal writes for so many people in Ireland & elsewhere, who have become comfortable with a Soviet style governance.

Fergal, being foremost a wordsmith, slips the shiv silently into Irelands corpus.....

People will continue to wear masks even where it is not required, to protect themselves and also to protect others. In particular, on public transport it will still be advised and it will be required in healthcare settings.

I have had many communications this week from people who are anxious about the decision to end mask wearing requirements and who do not see the logic at this point.

Did Fergal ask these anxious people,if not at this point....then when ? ...at what point will their anxiousness become liveable with ? will their Covid bug EVER be at a level commensurate with normal human co-existance ?

That is a question, which needs to be increasingly asked as the 28th Feburary 2022 draws inwards upon us all.....

Let it,and your communicants,go Fergal...they will soon be restored to the true levels of Faith in Humanity they deserve, and in time, will slip the piece of cotton & elastic or the box/s of medical grade covers into a bottom drawer someplace.

The real, concrete and obvious threat to Human health and wellbeing is currently growing bolder by the day,and none of our Masks,Vaccines or Lockdowns matters a whit to it.

Fergal,if you want another end-of-days scenario to start documenting in a new diary then simply pull the curtains and look to the East !! 😲

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

    Charles Mackay (1812-1889)

I wouldn't read anything by Fergal Bowers, he has been wallowing in misery since all this started.

    It's finally here!

Just stuck on the headlines and while the situation in Ukraine rightly dominates the news, there was that much awaited mention that masks are no longer mandatory from today.

It's finally over - domestically anyway!

Hopefully the EU likewise realises there's far more important things to worry about now than Covid passports and masks on flights.

    I don't even care that it's Monday! 😊

Isn't today the last day and it's effective tomorrow?

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,860 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

That's what I thought as well but according to the headlines it's effective from this morning.

Oh lovely! I wonder do we still need the locator forms to fly into the country?

I'll be very curious to hear people's experiences on the first day

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,860 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

One of my team just called me to let me know he'll be late as he's on a train that's delayed due to "operational difficulties", but he says most are still wearing masks this morning. I think it'll take day or two for it to sink in for most.

He also mentioned that PCR tests aren't free anymore and cost up to 90 quid now? I think that'll accelerate the end as well as we won't be seeing big case numbers if people have to shell out that sort of cash.

As you don't read him, how would you know? Actually he's been pretty good in that weekly column of his. Not much of it falls under that blanket label of yours but he has been one of the more reflective commentators on it. That said I'm glad we are done with all of that.

Nearly 2 years to the day since the first lockdown. It's crazy how quick and how slow it went at the same time.

I lived nearly 25% of my post college life in Covid which I find mad because I feel like I've been out of college for ages and ages.

I have no idea what happened to IR during covid but it's worse now than ever.

Every single occasion over the last few months that I've had reason to take the dart or commuter service, it's been delayed and significantly so.

Really is hard to fathom how public transport in Ireland isn't a real electoral issue

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,860 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

It's because public transport is still seen (and run) as the option for those with no better alternatives I think.

You're right though.. it especially doesn't make sense that it's not bigger issue with more and more people living further away from work/college because of the housing and rental crisis, but the Greens seem to think that everyone can just cycle everywhere so that doesn't help the bulk of current commuters.

PCR tests are still free, they've just changed the criteria to get one.

If someone wants a private test which they've been able to get throughout then it varies from 60-90 quid depending where you go.

Ah OK, ta!.. is that the thing about free testing now being limited to over 50s or did I imagine hearing that somewhere?

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,264 ✭✭✭✭stephenjmcd

    Yeah it's been fairly limited

    • are 55 years of age or older and have not had a COVID-19 vaccine booster dose
    • have a high-risk medical condition
    • have a weak immune system (immunocompromised)
    • live in the same household as a person who is immunocompromised
    • provide support or care to a person who is immunocompromised
    • are pregnant
    • are a healthcare worker

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,860 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

Thanks for that. Seems about right and makes sense given where we are now IMO.

just back from week in spain, was glorious for the weather.

stayed in hotel and they were strill strict about wearting masks walking around, even though the policy at the moment in that region is where social distancing cannot be done (hotel wasnt busy).

was nice to get away, weas nice to get back and see people not wearing masks in the shopping centre yesterday, id say it was about 50/50.

school this morning, two parents from about 60 had them on, thought more would.

    its done now, #openthepubs

Ah it wouldn't be a weekday without Pat Kenny's regular worry/hand-wringing (washing) slot.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,604 ✭✭✭Amadan Dubh

What is he trying to moan about now? Is he not able to jump on the anti-Russia bandwagon like all the other misery merchants?

He did devote the first half hour to Ukraine, but then it was over to a School Principal who is maintaining some of the measures around primarily hand washing as far as I could tell. Pat seemed a bit deflated that there wasn't a push on masks in the school. Seems to be left up to people to decide themselves (as it should be)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,604 ✭✭✭Amadan Dubh

The big question is what Mr Kenny will talk about next? Obviously he can't go near the housing crisis given his own contribution to it; and Ukraine discussions don't really go anywhere as we're all on the same page with it.

As the masks get discarded into the bin and pretty much the final restrictions have eased from today, I wish to bow out of following and posting the odd time on this thread.

Thank you for your company over the last few years. Many will not have agreed with my view that from May last year that we should have been in the same place as we are now today with the responsibility passed onto individuals and not dictated to by the State. That certs and passes were a huge over reach etc. but nevertheless here we are at last today.

I am glad to see, to my surprise, that Ireland is in the leading pack to officially ease all the restrictions in Europe. Enjoy life, enjoy people, enjoy the smiles and enjoy the beautiful country that we have.

Pat would love to get the republican socialists who have been sympathetic towards Russia on.

We all remember how he almost suffered an aneurysm when excoriating the shinners over water charges.

It was so good to get on the bus this morning and not have to wear a mask! First time in 2 years. Then to walk into work and actually see my colleagues faces, 2 who only started in December and honestly hadn't seen them without a mask! Its a good day...thank feck, goodbye masks

Why would anyone have a problem with basic hand hygiene (which is what it essentially is). Even pre-covid many workplaces were (having to) push this - most offices I was in had the signs up/ instructions before Covid was a thing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,242 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

He has his regular anti-cycling stuff to fall back on in an emergency.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,137 ✭✭✭323

Indeed, Slán leat, if only common sense had prevailed mid last year. How many SME's would have survived. Vax/booster certs still being pushed as a work requirement by industries in UK, EU and elsewhere so currently closing my business and layed off all.

Interesting one with Iceland. Canceling the Covid narrative completely with their health authorities advising the Icelanders that “as many people as possible need to be infected with the virus as the vaccines are not enough.” They are going with herd immunity derived from natural infection.

“Follow the trend lines, not the headlines,”

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,851 ✭✭✭✭average_runner

You cant get herd immunity though, The virus is similar to the flu, there is no herd immunity.

People have picked up covid twice in the last 6 weeks

It's more like a cold virus, about 30% of those are caused by coronaviruses, those who get reinfected tend to be less sick as well so herd immunity is possible

Lidl today was about 50/50... Well more like about 45/45, about 10% of people were wearing masks as chin warmers, what category would they fall into?
