The poster said they "I asked an old lady why she was wearing it"

Why you chose to defend this I have no idea and in such a strange imaginary way.

You shouldn't be asking elderly women why they're wearing masks. Equally, you shouldn't be asking 6'4" well muscled men why they're wearing masks, but I have a feeling you're the type that will stick to asking elderly women.

Was sitting in the dentist office having a chat

Said the masks are gone in shops today today

She said she'll wear hers there's a lot of it around

Post was a bit of a windup but point stands a lot of people only think they know why they're wearing them anyway

Still have to say I could never have forseen them gone by march

MM is another absolute clown giving his opinion

Thanks I am glad to have an imagination. I was clearly taking the piss. Kirk had said it was a general conversation, which you are allow to have, even more so in a dentists waiting room.

You make it sound like people are delusional to want to keep wearing the mask, or that they're doing it out of terror.

My family know the score. We've done our reading online about the virus, know a few people who have gotten it, etc. We're not freaked out about it, or believe that it's the end of the world.

However, we can see that as a precaution, it isn't much hassle to do (wearing the mask). I don't really get the hate for the masks here, or the need to feel contempt towards people who wear them. Covid causes problems for people with underlying conditions. That's a simple fact. You might not have any such conditions, and neither do I.. however, my parents have a variety of such conditions due to their age. It is irresponsible to ignore the problems and possible damage that covid could do to them... and so, wearing the mask makes sense.

Considering the numbers of elderly in this country, it makes sense for many people who do spent time with such people to be a little careful. Such as wearing the mask, washing their hands, and keeping distance from other people (whether they're wearing the mask or not). It makes sense for that kind of situation. And it doesn't cost much effort to do, and becomes something of habit once you stop thinking about it.

For you, perhaps it doesn't. Grand. Bully for you. However, it's worth showing a tiny bit of respect for those people that covid is relevant for. It doesn't cost you anything not to be dismissive of their concerns.

    Yes in all situations.

I was in a shopping centre in Northern Ireland today and way more than half still wearing masks which surprised me. I was expecting a lot less masks. People still keeping their distance too. In fairness in my town south of the border most people are still wearing the masks in shops too. Less than it was a few weeks ago. I think it will become less and less as the weeks pass by.

I'll continue to wear mine due to a family situation. Nobody has commented to me though for wearing one, I'm not sure how ill react if someone does comment though. I'll probably just say because i want to wear it. I wont be giving a complete stranger a breakdown of my families health status.

It's over, Tony won't let you sit at the front of the church during mass and call you out for a special thanks in his sermons.

I would like if people continued to wash their hands properly more than the masks, as was the case throughout COVID. And also respect the benefits of ventilation. These aren't COVID specific points going forward, I just think people should continue with leaving windows open and washing their hands thoroughly going forward.

What an idiotic comment. Again more bs from the pedestal occupiers judging others for maybe wearing a mask. Seriously what is it with the hard man additude on this thread?

If someone is wearing a mask they chose to do so for personal reasons whether family or medical. You don't get a free pass to throw snide remarks at people you don't know because of your own basic ignorance. If you don't want to wear a mask fine. No one is going to make you.

There are and have been plenty of snide comments thrown at people not wearing masks (or wearing them properly) on this forum over the last 2 years, and even in the last 24 hours.

The difference is that those now happily moving on without masks have generally always been pro-choice, whereas the mask advocates are generally authoritarian and want everyone else to not just respect their choice, but make the same choice as well.

If people want others to respect their choice to wear a mask (a reasonable expectation), the flip side is that they need to equally respect that others have the same right not to.

I was replying to one particular snide comment about Tony and Altars and being thanked for wearing one.

And with all due respect the comments here in the last couple of weeks have been overrun with insults and innuendo like that one against anyone saying that those choosing to wear a mask should be able to do so without that type of attitude

You say "The difference is that those now happily moving on without masks have generally always been pro-choice, whereas the mask advocates are generally authoritarian and want everyone else to not just respect their choice, but make the same choice as well"

Well frankly that's bull. Take a read of this thread and the other threads for evidence which shows any notion that those virulentely against masks are in any way pro choice.

You say "If people want others to respect their choice to wear a mask (a reasonable expectation), the flip side is that they need to equally respect that others have the same right not to."

Again away from the screamers on these threads attributing all kinds of bizarre attributes, insults and character flaws to those who have used masks or who may continue to use them, I do not see any significant view that some people think others should be forced to wear a mask. Certainly there's been discussion around mask ware in general and even inconsistencies pointed out and like all discussion there will be disagreement.

The utter hysteria by some exhibited in this thread about mask during a pandemic is truely incredible. It remains the mask mandate has now been rescinded. People need to seriously catch a grip.

I think im just going to continue following the advice. So no, i dont need to wear the mask.

But out of respect to others, if i have any cold, sneeze, whatsoever i will wear one.

Anyway i cant believe the amount of people who believe the wearing of their own mask is to stop them catching covid.

Its to stop you spreadfing it if you have it.

Aggression begets further aggression. I take it you haven't looked over the posts of the anti-mask crowd checking for snide or outright insulting comments? And as for being pro-choice, meh.. there's very little respect being handed out by most people here about letting people choose for themselves... and that definitely includes the camp you adhere to. Go on.. stop for a moment, suspend your offended being, and evaluate the range of opinions on this thread towards those who would wear their masks.

I'm not saying that the pro-mask crowd are innocent of anything. The last two years have brought about a lot of confusion, and worry to people, in addition to the effects of being put into very limited boxes. It's quite understandable that people have thrown out their frustrations. Not excusing them in the slightest, btw.

There wasn't much respect for those who made the choice to not get vaccines. They were looked upon with a strange sense of bile. I'm vaccinated but respected the choice of those who aren't.

    Such a hypocritical post.

The mask can provide some protection against catching covid. It's not a comprehensive protection, but it does allow some small help. Personally, I can't believe the way people jump to extremes, dismissing the value of the mask, just because it's not a total protection. I view it as being no different from taking vitamins, or that of distancing... it's might help you from catching covid, but it's not any kind of absolute. I don't expect it to be. It also depends on what kind of mask you're wearing. The surgical and cloth masks are pretty much useless, but the filtered ones provide some benefit.

You talked about something completely unrelated to my post, and then claimed my post to be hypocritical.

If my post was hypocritical, then I'm sure you can find posts of mine insulting people who chose not to wear masks? Otherwise, you're talking shite and reinforcing my point about aggressive posters.

Haven't been out and about myself yet.

But himself went into a shopping centre yesterday not wearing his mask. Said it felt a little strange. He said there were a few people in the stores not wearing masks and coughing and spluttering away which made him uncomfortable so he put on a mask then. One store - a nationwide supermarket - had a sign up to say masks were required. He was chatting a shop assistant in another store who said they were told NOT to wear masks on the shop floor which they weren't entirely happy, that they wanted a choice.

Eh, people coughing and spluttering was gross in the before times too. Not wanting to catch a cold, isn't bloody "fearful". Thinking people with poor manners around coughing/ sneezing/ hand hygiene are dicks isn't the same as being "conditioned" or "fearful". They were dicks 3 years ago, they're dicks now.

When i go out I might wear a mask or I might not . It depends on how I am , if I have a cold etc or if its it crowded . I will make that decision for my situation and my families situation and will fully respect everyone else’s decisions to wear a mask or not to wear one .

He would get sick and miss work actually. Before he started getting the flu vaccine he would miss weeks of work in the winter. With that vaccine it reduced it down to a couple of days here and there. He has an underlying condition and a lowered immunity.

By making all of our rules legally-enforceable we didn't respect any personal responsibility; the State took that away and decided what would be best for the individual. Ireland's response to covid was based on the premise that people should not be allowed to have personal responsibility. Those that supported the restrictions seemed to condition themselves via cognitive dissonance that the restrictions were not relaxed because people could not be trusted to have personal responsibility while at the same time called for people to exercise personal responsibility, have "cop on" and "do the right thing". Now we see this attitude in its glaring hypocrisy with some of the continued mask-wearers getting upset at people not "taking personal responsibility" and continuing to wear one, as if personal responsibility existed at all in our covid response!

serious amount on crap on here..

me?.. I didn't wear my mask in the SM yday - cos I didn't feel the need.. but it felt odd.. like I was expecting a member of staff to tell me to put one on... guess i'm a bit institutionalised...

I'll play it by ear - but will probably wear one more than not..

First time in a supermarket this morning without a mask and it felt so good to be back to normal ,i was in a large Supervalu and i counted only two staff with them on and a handful of customers ,i reckon by Paddy’s day bank holidays Covid will be forgotten about and very few if any people will be wearing them anymore.

It sounds to me that your position is that you felt you were the odd (one out) more than anything else. You even admit you're a bit institutionalised at this point.

Both of those are about YOU, not anyone else around you and that's fine and all (it's not really but at least you recognise the issue - it's up to you whether you take steps to address it) but let's not pretend that it has anything to do with health.

I am going to start wearing a mask again because it seems to annoy other people who are in no way impacted by me wearing a mask.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,996 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

It's not as annoying as those who want to wear their masks but expect everyone else to do the same to make them feel better, and who seem very put out when those others don't agree.

Work away yourself, but that's all you're entitled to. Choice is a great thing and long overdue on this particular topic.

I'd say mask wearers were in the majority in my local Lidl today, probably at least 60/40 if not 70/30. None of the floor staff were wearing one, but the (only) checkout girl was wearing one.

sure for all I know I could have the virus.. but my main argument with you is this

"The difference is that those now happily moving on without masks have generally always been pro-choice, whereas the mask advocates are generally authoritarian and want everyone else to not just respect their choice, but make the same choice as well."

your words.. such bull - totally and utterly

for your info.. I wore my mask in the SM again today - cos it felt v warm in there.. today it wasn't cos I felt that staff expected me too.. and I am v pro choice..

    Yes in all situations.

Masks may not be mandatory any longer, but they are recommended in health care settings, which includes pharmacies (and I presume dentists' offices).

Seems to be causing some confusion... both for customers and staff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,996 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

    No

No, you made no suggestion of having the virus. You said you felt odd about not having a mask on and perhaps institutionalised.

As I said, neither of those are anything to do with health or anyone else, and it's equally your choice whether to follow this realisation to its conclusion and either : work through the no doubt temporary feelings of discomfort, or continue to mask up as the easier option.

However, your tone (and that of many other posters) in these responses ("such bull" indeed) validates my point - ultimately you want others to go along so that you feel more comfortable and validated in your choice. What THEY want doesn't matter.

That's the difference here. I don't care whether some continue to wear masks. I DO care about them trying to pressure me or others to do likewise, and because we have already seen how national policy and decision making has been led by such conservative and indeed selfish attitudes, hence why it's taken so long to finally emerge from some of the longest restrictions in Europe if not the world.

Covid is thankfully in the rear view mirror. Yes there were unfortunately casualties (but that was always going to be the case) and there are some who will still need to be careful, but it's now at a stage where the level of threat is even less than the generally low level it's always been. It was never the Black Death or mass killer we thought it could be in early 2020, and that is a good thing and something we should all be thankful for.

So again, it's time to move on and deal with the huge domestic issues facing the country that have been put on hold or allowed to worsen over the past 2 years - from health care to housing - not continue to obsess and fret about something that statistically is of little to no real risk to the vast majority of people that have already put up with so much.

Ciara Kelly on Newstalk put it perfectly recently when she said that the Covid measures were to address health concerns, not the anxieties of some. It was true then, it's definitely true now.

In the local shop yesterday morning getting a sandwich(wearing a mask). One of the local workers who would know all the staff came in saying "yeah no mask,no mask,no mask..uh oh mask!
