    Werewolves Within (2021)

A teensy bit too cutesy and knowing in its dialogue, yet a much better Edgar Wright film than Edgar Wright's actual, most recent release. A horror-comedy that somewhat lacked much of the former - with few definitive moments of terror, though lots of fakeout jumps - the comedy held up mind you; the humour mostly landing through its asides and energetic, enthusiastic cast, lead by the usually excellent Sam Richardson. The small budget was compensated by lots of clever and pleasing uses of the camera: whether it was working around the lack of any FX money; or just various funny visual punchlines - all following that crash-cut spirit of those early Edgar Wright flicks (or his TV sitcom, Spaced). The paranoia of the cast was often worked well through smart blocking of its characters, or constant bickering and crowded dialogue just the right side of chaotic.

All told, impressive enough that I'll be keeping an eye on Josh Ruben's next gig for sure; while even if it's faint praise to say it, this is far and away the best video-game adaptation seen in cinema. I doubt it'll make many people's best-of lists but the journey was funny, tense and it all looked great.

Ya, I know what you mean. I was in a very easy going mood last night. Kinda enjoying this, but then it just got a bit too outrageous - the fighting scene between the 2 main characters, and then in bed together. No recovery from that for me.

Chungking Express - 15-odd years after I first watched it, I'm definitely increasingly of the view that Wong Kar Wai's masterpiece is maybe the defining film of the 1990s. A film whose remarkable style grabs me from the first frame and then goes some incredible places over 100 minutes. It's all so loose and freewheeling in the best possible way, as gritty and mundane as it is swooningly romantic. Wong drops 'California Dreamin'' like seven or eight times and every single one feels like the needle drop cinema was made for.

What's Up Doc / Targets - Hadn't seen these two before, so Bogdanovich's passing proved the catalyst needed to watch them. Two remarkable films in very different ways. What's Up Doc is my favourite type of cinematic comedy - the jokes are woven into the very visual design and editing of the film. The whole thing is basically an elaborate gag setup and release: every piece being put into place steadily until everything spirals into complete chaos across several anarchic setpieces. A delight to watch.

Targets, in contrast, slow burns in a much more ominous way: two separate narratives building to the most surprising of releases, where the magic of one cinematic era clashes with the brutal, casual, wanton violence of 1960s reality. Bogdanovich was quite the filmmaker in those remarkable early years of his career.

Maeve - a landmark in Irish and British and feminist film, and one that has deservedly been properly restored. Few films engage with the politics of the Troubles so deeply and provocatively.

The Mauritanian (2021) - Important film elevated by a standout performance from Tahar Rahim in the lead role. It shows what Mohamedou Slahi was subjected to at Guantanamo Bay after being held there without charge. Uncomfortable viewing at times due to the subject matter. 8/10.

    Edge of Darkness (2010)

2000's type thriller movie with nothing exceptional in it but it's not bad either. Mel Gibson is the protagonist up against bad corporate and bad politics. Ray Winstone supports as a sort ambivalent spook fixer. Worth a watch I think if you are in the mood for this type of thing and if like me this one went under the radar at the time.

6.1/10 (working off an IMDB type film scale here as usual)

Cheers for the tip! That was a great movie, just watched this evening and had never heard of it. Crazy how it had fallen completely under the the radar.

Thought Angela was great, funny how some young actors show so much promise and then fade away.

    RED ROCKET

A washed-up porn star clashes with his estranged wife after returning to his hometown in Texas.

From Sean Baker who brought us the Florida Project.

Similar Backdrop , dysfunctional Americana , Pink shopping Malls amongst suburban wasteland , lowlife neon strip bars and opioids.

This one however is a dark comedy rather than a socially commenting Drama.

I laughed a lot. Its a bit shocking. great character study.

    Ray Donovan The Movie

Ray Ray is back for the finale of this epic epic series that for me stands up against almost anything ever produced for TV. The arc of this show from its inception was just a beautiful curve, with the brilliance captured in that there are so many characters that go through so many changes of life, ultimately all dictated by their childhood, with all the trauma's of old Ireland in their upbringing in Boston. If you never watched Ray Donovan, you have many hours of entertainment ahead of you.

Jon Voight now 84 running around like a spring chicken is something else, but Shreiber steals it with another fantastic performance that brings the show to a fitting climax. And it really is a climax, the pieces just fall into place and it all makes sense, it is a really brilliant culmination of every season gluing it all together. Shreiber who was nominated for Golden Globes for this portrayal of Ray for something like 6 years in a row without a win has been a character only second to maybe Tony Soprano in the annals of TV. Just under appreciated.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) - Comic crime caper starring Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer and Michelle Monaghan. Downey Jr. reckons it's one of his best films. I'm not a big fan of him but I did enjoy him in this and Kilmer is fun playing a gay private investigator. I was entertained by it and there were several moments that made me laugh out loud. I'd give this an 8/10.

Jungle Cruise (2021) - I thought for sure I would enjoy this as I'm a fan of The Rock and I like Emily Blunt, although I hadn't realised Jack Whitehall was in it (ugh), but it's just not very good. I didn't find it funny, the villains are poor fare, and the plot, even for a film like this, is nonsense. It's a jungle snooze sadly. 5/10.

    Ron's Gone Wrong (2021)

Enjoyable and light-hearted, the titular robot creating the most laughs with the "fish out of water" inspired, innocent chaos. The light sprinkling of social commentary - specific to our increasingly social-media obsessed children - was welcome but given it was a children's movie, maybe it should have leaned further into the message that Social Media is Evil. Instead, the film tried to have it both ways. Literally: with 2 tech CEOs, one comically evil, the other more conscientious, only trying to make the world better with his invention. Felt like a fluffier version of The Mitchells vs. The Machines, to its detriment - but still created enough chuckles and entertainment to get it over the line.

    Encanto

Disney Musical Animation. One of the best looking animations I have seen. Very colorful and easy on the eye.

However whole thing is let down by lack of standout songs and comic relief characters, The plot is also very confusing and muddled. Hard even for an adult to follow.

    6/10

Snowpiercer (2013) - Never seen this film before and it was better than I thought it would be. The concept of it taking place on a train hadn't appealed to me but it turned out to be intriguing. 8/10.

This is the complete opposite of the feeling for Encanto in my house. Since Christmas, my kids have watched it 20+ times and the soundtrack is on a permanent rotation. The best Disney movie in years imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,027 ✭✭✭homerun_homer

I'd be in agreement on this. At Christmas we stuck it on (three adults, and three kids) and none of us were wowed by it bar the gorgeous animation. I struggled to stay awake during it if I'm honest. I went to wiki after to make sure I didn't miss something vital to the plot cause it was seemed like nonsense, but no, it is just nonsense. I know some of the songs have gained popularity this month, I am sorta dumbfounded by it. I said at the time "would it hurt to have a catchy song like Under the Sea?"

    Clean (2021)

Adrian Brody self-funded thriller. Must be chancing his arm in dreams of putting himself forward to become the next Liam Neeson so as to rake in a couple of hundred million like he did but don't see it happening. Pretty short and inconsequential thing really. Just about worth the watch.

    House of Gucci

The accents in this are a little awful. Maybe now Italians will know what its like when Irish people have to deal with Tom Cruise style Irish Hollywood Brogues as in Far and Away. It's easy enough to get over this though. The Plot loses Momentum a lot and it feels like it meanders but the Star power carries it through(Lady GaGA, Al Pacino, Adam Driver , Jared Leto. Not bad auld fare , little pedestrian in parts , gammy accents but worth a watch.

A Hidden Life. Malik teases the viewer with glimmers traditional film structure throughout a 3 hour run time but never delivers. Frustrating because this could have been a great movie with trimming and proper dialog exchanges.

The Salton Sea as mentioned above is an excellent show.

Meet The Parents still as entertaining as ever . Great comedy

I am planning to watch Titane soon so I decided to watch it's film spirit guide "Crash" (Cronenberg one, not racism one). Before going in I was expecting bumper to bumper (pun intended) scenes of car crashes and a few eyebrow raising sex scenes. I got the complete opposite. A lot of naughty bits and a few fender benders (ooh arr missus). The highlight for me was the Howard Shore score. Just paints a picture of twisted metal. A film I'd recommend if you're in the mood for watching an auteur perfect his craft but expect every character to have sex with every other character at some point.

    Confessions (2010)

V/H/S 94 (Shudder) - recovering somewhat from the nosedive that was Viral, this is still an uneven anthology film. I found it a bit frustrating that, having opted for a specific period setting, some shorts decided to pursue the relevant video presentation and aesthetic properly, while others just slapped a default filter on and called it a day. Which, well, why bother? The Jakarta-set short was probably the best of the bunch, though the framing-device story felt like it could have been better if it was given more space to breathe.

Guns Akimbo (Amazon Prime) - I stuck this on with a "let's give it 15 minutes" attitude, but it was better than expected and kept my attention throughout. Narratively it's like Free Guy crossed with Crank, telling the story of Miles, a shluh who accidentally gets himself roped into a duel run by a streaming snuff platform. There's not a lot of flab on it, the humour is dark enough to match the premise (and most of the jokes land, which helps) and the visual style has a fair bit of flair (it does a much better job of the style Suicide Squad 2016 had, but still falls a bit short of Edgar Wright, the current maestro of such presentation). The main downsides are the use of several bloody awful nu-metal covers of good songs during action scenes, and the use of post-production visual effects for things like blood spatter (the effects aren't awful, but they're not quite seamlessly done either). Samara Weaving does a good job of a more plausible version of Harley Quinn, and Radcliffe acquits himself well as a too-inoffensive-for-his-own-good guy caught up in increasingly deranged circumstances.

The Boys in Company C (1978) Came across this Vietnam war film and not a bad watch at all, if not great. There's nothing new about it, guys get drafted and go through training and are sent out to war. There's a a slight comedic element to it, which makes it not as heavy hitting as a lot of the other war films about this period, and they don't go into the details the likes of full metal jacket and platoon go into. Its actually a true story where the goal of the captain is to play the local Vietnamese team in a soccer match, and then the players and the company won't have to go into battle again, they can play soccer instead. Word of warning, Pele and Aediles weren't choreographing the football this time.

    CODA

Film about deaf family and one daughter who could hear.

Wasnt expecting much with this. Thought it might be bit draggy. But wow. Absolutely loved it. Wasn't too over the top with sentimentality. A perfect Sunday night film for me. I'd give it a 9 out of 10. Don't have any reason really for docking a point. Maybe just been a bit measly. Great performances all round too.

Child's Play (1988) - I've watched shows and movies about creepy dolls that come to life but never seen this film before. It does what you expect and isn't too long that it wears out its welcome. The explanation for what's going on is pretty silly but the kid and mother are easy to root for. 7/10.

    Censor (2021)

There's probably a good film to be made about the moral panic over "video nasties" in 1980s Britain - but this ain't it, unfortunately. It never really quite decided what it wanted to do with the setting, its lead, the Inciting Incident - or indeed the obvious cinematic influences occasionally recreated within. 2012's Berberian Sound Studio did a much better job with that; specifically that slow unpeeling of the main character's sanity, as they became increasingly steeped in the "corruption" of Giallo Cinema. So while that older film became more gloriously unhinged, Censor just ... kinda sulked for most of its running time; that eventual swing into madness feeling more like a script unsure how to bring it all home. The last act felt both sudden and very arbitrary, to the point that I'm not sure it made a lick of sense. That it was a stylistic, 4th wall breaking flourish made the sake of it.

    A Cure For wellness (2016)

Far-from-perfect but interesting-at-times mystery / horror melange with some good Lovecraftian vibes and decent body-horror elements. Worth a watch if you like that sort of tone and setting. A bit too long and the ending is imo, as is often the case, one of the weaker elements.

    6.1 / 10 on the IMDB scale.

Underwater. Good enough that I watched it twice. Set design is top notch and Stewart runs around in underpants which is a plus.

Also on disney plus, Firestorm. A decent Die Hard in a type.... actioner. For example :

Die Hard on a bus- Speed

Due Hard on the rocky mountains- Cliffhanger.

Firestorm is Die Hard in a forest.. William Foersythe plays the villain

    Dead Ringers (1988)

Cronenbergs follow up to his remake of The Fly, its one that moves into a more cerebral space in comparison to the heavy body horror elements of his previous works. It stars Jeremy Irons as twin gynecologists that share everything, from their medical practice to their home to the women in their lives. The wheels start to come off when one of the twins falls for a patient that his brother had previously seduced and we begin a spiral into drug addiction and paranoia. Like alot of Cronenbergs work, this is a challenging watch. Irons I thought was excellent in the dual roles, one a confident and gregarious borderline sociopath, the other, more introverted and obviously under coercive control. As you would expect, scenes of body horror are evident but they are certainly not the star of the show. Not one Id be in any huge rush to rewatch but nevertheless, a good entry in a very strong catalogue.

    7/10

In Search of Darkness II (2020)

A mammoth, 4.5 hour long deep dive into 80s horror, this is a must watch for genre fans. The first one heavily focused on the big three franchises, but didnt really show anything that hadn't been seen in franchise specific docs like Never Sleep Again, Crystal Lake Memories or His Name Was Jason. Part II on the other hand casts the net wide in terms of what it covers off. Essentially, it goes through a list of horror movies for every year from 1980 to 1989 and has a bunch of talking heads (cast, directors, journalists) talking about the movies. There are more widely known movies from the likes of Argento, Fulci and Craven to more obscure features like Humanoids from the Deep, Cellar Dweller, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Night Beast or Dead & Buried. Very enjoyable to be reminded of some random trash and to add more to the watch list. Part III is in production currently. For those interested, Parts I & II are both available to watch in full on Shudder and you can sign up for a one week free trial. Shudder UK is weak enough in terms of content but the US version using a VPN is excellent.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City (2021)

Takes some effort to produce something worse than Paul WS Anderson's original, and inexplicably successful, take on the video game franchise - but here we are. This reboot was almost irredeemably bad: an absolute trash-fire that would surely baffle those ignorant of the series - but also changed enough from the games that it would annoy fans as well.

Divorced of whether it was a good adaptation or not (it wasn't), fundamentally it was terrible movie; the writing, directing, plotting - everything - either overcooked or just bordering on amateur; the FX revealing the apparent $25 million budget, unforgivably awful in this day age. While things like the digital grain and overused filtering made it a deeply UGLY film to watch.

There were literally two things in all the runtime that I liked: a single use of split diopter that pleased the Film Nerd in me; and Donal Logue's performance, applying the right amount of No Fúcks Given energy among the leaden TV grade cast, all playing it way too seriously. Actually, no, there was a third thing: there was a corpse prop so phenomenally fake and rubbery I laughed out loud it got into the final cut.

Having seen a good review in Sight & Sound, I took a punt on The Scary Of Sixty First on Shudder. Short version is - don't bother.

It's a first feature film about a couple of twentysomethings who luck into an apartment in Manhattan's Upper East Side at a surprisingly cheap rate, only to find out that it was owned and used by a real-life sex trafficker whose name still comes up in the news (yes, him).

Technically, it's not bad - it's set in present day but the grain and colour grade feels very much like a throwback to late 70s and early 80s horror. The acting is a bit overdone, like the cast are playing Flanders'd versions of themselves. But the script is really where the problems are. There are two strands to the story - one flatmate meets a stranger, starts "investigating" the sex trafficker (and talking methamphetamine because of course) and goes down a conspiracy rabbit hole, while the other flatmate is apparently possessed by a victim of the trafficker. We know about the latter because she starts talking in a little girl voice and collectiny memorabilia for a specific monarchic friend of the trafficker. It's as subtle as a brick, and serves no narrative function - it's just there to fill time, and mostly takes the form of scenes in which the actor frots herself with her collection of photos.

Ultimately, only the conspiracy plotline goes anywhere - but it would have been stronger had it not relied so much on repeatedly referencing the trafficker and drawing out scenes of two speed-freaks talking about the most facile elements of the news coverage, then adding 1 and 1 to get Q(Anon).

Realistically, nobody would have heard of this if it hadn't gone for the cheaply exploitative angle of overtly setting itself in the middle of a real, horrific situation about which it has nothing to say, no thoughts to offer. It's basically self-involved twenty-somethings being edgy and provocative, which is fine as long as you can offer something more once you have caught people's attention. There is nothing more to this film. I'll be making a note of the writers' names only to make sure I don't watch anything of theirs again, although based on this I don't think we need to worry about a high profile career for either of them.

    The Forgotten Battle (2020)

An unfocused ensemble WW2 tale from The Netherlands, set during the dying embers of the war; the environs of broken Dutch polders, flooded and sodden so soldiers moved with a heavy gait, punctuated a palpable weight and resignation felt throughout the film. That everyone was simply exhausted, hungry and wanting this war to be over; its combatants indifferent towards heroism, now that the Finish Line was in sight. And while there was nothing wrong with the film's ambition and sense of scale telling a story from all sides, its disparate stories just never came together in any kind of satisfying - or even cohesive - fashion. Made more jarring by a tone that bounced between gritty realism at one point, and earnest family melodrama at another.

    Blacklight (2022)

A new low for a Liam Neeson action vehicle. The story here really is dire, so uninspired and beyond cliché. Also Neeson has got to the stage where he can't convincingly break into a run anymore. Terrible.

    Nightride (2021)

A one-last-deal-before-going-straight situation with the the up-against-the-clock dynamic shot in a "real-time" presentation that just about pulls it off. Set in Belfast. Shades of Locke (2013) but not 100% constrained to a car as in that case. Worth an uncomplicated watch.

I enjoyed this. Found it fairly gripping. Ya, the comparison with Locke is first thing that springs to mind if having seen the two of them. Locke is good, but Nightride has a bit more going on in terms of tension. For me anyway.

He is in his "will sign up to any old shite stage"

The premise for this one is so paper-thin and over-done and that's what makes it so bad first-and-foremost.

Neeson will he start doing Bruce Willis 10-minute cameo jobs where he's billed as the main star in the "movie" things next I wonder?

"Locke" is the better film and Tom Hardy by far the more accomplished performance imo but "Nightride" is more of a thriller plot-by-numbers so will come across as more "gripping" in a superficial sense whereas "Locke" is a drama really.

Stars Normal peoples Daisy Edgar Jones. Its probably a good enough horror film. I can't stomach body horror stuff though nor can I understand how anyone else can so I could only watch to a certain point and was enjoying it until then. If your able to watch the likes of Cronnenbergs stuff then you might be able to enjoy it.
