    Yes Mr Lavrov, of course.

Cant believe the dickheads still here both sides'ing this.

The mentality that prides itself for being contrarian for the sake of it is beyond belief. This delusional sense that taking the opposite opinion somehow validates them as being some sort of independent thinker, when it just exposes a blind adherence to to their narrative as they are too wedded to their contrarian persona to actually think for themselves and develop a rational worldview based on reality.

Residents against the changing of the name of the road.

Do people realise this is the southside of Dublin in one of the most affluent areas of the country?

Not a chance they're having their road name as Independent Ukraine Road.

The moral calculation has to be as follows.

If the west is to continue to supply weapons to Ukraine, which it must - anything else is morally indefensible - it has to be clear about what the end goal is. The end goal has to be Ukrainian victory, the utter routing of the Russian army and a restoration of full Ukrainian territorial integrity, which obviously means Crimea and Donbas.

Providing enough weapons to merely keep the Russians "bogged down" is not good enough, and is morally indefensible. That way the war will continue indefinitely. This war has to be won.

Regime change in Russia - and preferably the entire regime spending the rest of their lives in cells in The Hague - is a natural follow on from Ukrainian victory.

I came into this thread railing against MICs (and I still hold to that in principle), but that has changed. Events make it clear that Europe needs to boost its military so that it can defend its own interests with minimal interference from east or west. (Not sure about NATO. I would prefer Europe create miltary alliances uncontaminated by superpowers.. not that the superpowers will let that happen, but it's what we should aim for.)

Suggestions for Orwell Road name change due to Russian Invasion? Mine is "1984 Road" for many reasons as it feels like a dystopian novel we are living in and it also feels like 1984

Give Taiwan some nuclear weapons, and that solves that problem. This is the genie Putin let out of the bottle; stark proof that without a nuclear deterent, any country is vulnerable to the territorial aspirations of a communist or dictator lead state.

Sure just go with George Orwell Road... that might be acceptable to the Ross O'Carroll-Kellys out there.

A situation report from the perspective of Ukraine:

Operational information of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as of 06.00, 10.03.2022

The fifteenth day of the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people against the russian military invasion has begun.

Ukraine's defense forces continue to hold back the offensive of the russian Armed Forces in Donetsk, Slobozhansky and parts of the Tavriya operational areas. Defend the Ukrainian cities of Kharkiv and Okhtyrka. The main efforts are focused on preventing the enemy from advancing in the south-eastern direction. The circular defense of the city of Mariupol continues.

At the same time, the state border with the Republic of Belarus continues to be covered.

In the Siverskyi region, Ukrainian defenders are defending the city of Chernihiv. Measures are being taken to deter the enemy from advancing in the direction of Kyiv.

The group of forces and means of defense of the city of Kyiv is constantly ready to repel the enemy's offensive, inflicts fire damage on the offensive group of occupiers and maintains certain defensive lines.

In the southern direction, the enemy is held back in the directions of the cities of Kryvyi Rih, Mykolayiv, Voznesensk and the settlement of Novovorontsovka (Kherson region).

In other areas, groups of troops are conducting a stabilization operation and performing territorial defense tasks.

Units of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine repel missile and bomb strikes and destroy enemy air strikes, provide air cover for important objects of Ukraine and groups of troops.

Over the past two days, fighter jets and anti-aircraft missile units have destroyed four Su-25 attack aircraft and two enemy helicopters.

The enemy reduced the pace of the offensive, its personnel demoralized. The number of cases of desertion and looting has significantly increased.

We believe in the Armed Forces and other Ukrainian defenders!

    Glory to Ukraine!

The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either – but right through every human heart…even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained. And even in the best of all hearts, there remains…an uprooted small corner of evil.

Thanks to ideology the twentieth century was fated to experience evildoing calculated on a scale in the millions. Alas, all the evil of the twentieth century is possible everywhere on earth. Yet, I have not given up all hope that human beings and nations may be able, in spite of all, to learn from the experience of other people without having to go through it personally.

Perhaps Putin wants a much bigger war so that he can simply do whatever he likes and expand Russian controlled territory.

His problem is that he can't win any war conventionally so has to rely on the nuclear threat or it's actual use.

How is any side supposed to know whether the other will escalate in steps or immediately strike multiple cities.

We know that Russia has more nuclear warheads but that advantage may be negated by US capability to intercept incoming missiles.

I'm guessing that there's a lot of chatter happening via back channels right now and that implicit approval may soon be given to the "West" to rattle Putin without fear of reprisal orders being followed. I'm hoping this is happening round about now. The Russians might then be in a position to remove Putin from the equation. One hopes.

Its isn't genius. It turns Rathgar into a canvass for trolling and the name is quite clunky. It freezes a part of Dublin in an eastern European territorial dispute on a whim.

I don't see anyone on this thread both sides-ing this conflict. Everyone knows Russia overstepped the line. What is happening is that people are imagining support for Putin whenever they imagine they have detected even the slightest deviation from their moral absolutism.

I was both sidesing bigoted Irish that get all het up about Trump and Biden. They are fools and barely worth commenting on. They are fook all use to Ireland or the US.

Conformity can be just as empty and dangerous as contrariness. And both can be good, depending on context.

It was the contrary ones that railed against the dominance of the Catholic Church in Ireland (while the conformists sneered). It was contrary ones that rebelled in 1916 (while the conformists spat on them in the street, literally). It will be the conformists that hold these advances together over time. So the categories of conformist, both sideism, and contrarian are pretty meaningingless in themselves.
