growing mushrooms in the garden

anyone ever tried this before? i have freshly felled ash logs so am going to try to inoculate them, i have just ordered spawn off a chap in kerry.

so i'll try them in the logs, but since i do a bit of woodturning i should be able to generate quicker crops using the woodshavings method. and appaently some will do well on used coffee grounds also.

it used to be that it was a couple of companies in the UK were the go-to people for spawn, but none of them ship outside the UK anymore - for obvious reasons.

There's a few places doing both the innoculants and the pre-prepared bags, I got a couple of them as a Christmas gift for someone and they were a big hit.

I know someone who is growing them in a shed. Its apparently fierce amount of bother and there was a big outlay. They have to be kept at a certain temperature and everything very clean. Though maybe you can find less fussy varieties

unfortunately i've just read that the wood we have - ash - is not great for mushroom growing.

bw, the same chap as above shows you don't need logs to do it, a simple method to do it is in a straw bed (albeit not one i'm planning); will probably try it in used coffee grounds though.

this is the crowd I ordered from, very helpful. I got the Grey Oyster and the Nameco. Both grew well but the Oyster was a big hit. I don't eat mushrooms so I don't know personally.

going as planned so far, i think; this is about three and a half weeks after i started, definitely some progress. this is on ash woodshavings.

With address pal you can have it delivered to an an post address in England and they then bring it to Ireland, very reasonable price.

Got wine cap spawn last year that I put into a woodchip bed. Hopefully I'll harvest this year

i think it depends on the substrate you're growing them on. growing on logs takes much longer than shavings or coffee grounds, but i suspect will give a higher yield albeit over a much longer period of time.
