an absolute gentleman , in the modern era of hurling in this county he is probably the best hurler not to win an all ireland , to auction probably the closest thing to a celtic cross sums up the man , id go so far to say that if he did win an all ireland that would be on auction as well ,

Heard Lillis was dropped for tomorrow for discipline issue.

  • Registered Users Posts: 584 ✭✭✭Treble double

    Pearse gone from the panel??

That is not good, a hugely important player for us.

Can't afford to lose players like that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,077 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

he will be back hopefully before the limerick game , lets just say he has been dropped before for the same issue in the past , just collins's way of making him work hard to get back in the panel and stick to the squad rules

we need him back because he has been excellent this year in every game he played even the derry game , he is a colossus of a footballer for us we cant afford to lose him long term

he hurled so bloody well for ballyea last year that he must have been in brian lohans radar , hes the most 100% player i have seen in years ,

rumor knocking around tonight that joe McGann is back on the panel and Tristian O'Callaghan is starting in goals , both spa men would make a huge difference to the side tomorrow in tuam

Too much chopping and changing going on for my liking suggests mood cant be great in the camp. Ryan is a decent keeper, his only issue is he hasn't a massive kick and can't belt it over a press. What kind of a kickout has this lad got? McGann is very hot and cold doesn't offer anything better than we already have.

    Galway 2-08 Clare 1-05

As poor a performance in front of goal as i have seen from this clare team , kicked 10 wides some of which incredibly poor epically in the second half , we dominated possession for most of the game but distribution was poor at the best of times , and any time a clare man was turned over galway punished us with a score

galway never had any really long spells of the game with possession , they didnt need to with the efficiency of heaney and comer , they kicked some excellent scores on the break paul conroy and kerian Malloy with the best scores of the game , malloy was man of the match for galway and drove them on all day as did his club mates dylan mchugh and liam silke , but this was a lesson in efficiency and one we really need to learn from

    Clare scorers

    Cillian Rouine 1-0,

    Eoin Cleary 0-2 (0-1f),

    David Tubridy 0-1 (0-1m),

    Keelan Sexton 0-1 (0-1f),

    Jamie Malone 0-1.

The game was anyones untill Clare handed a goal to Galway from a short kickout. It was game over then, they had worked so hard to curtail a multi talented Galway attack, particularly ODea and Brennan who I felt did well on Walsh and Comer. After all that work to just gift Galway a goal is the losing of the game. I'm not going to blame the young keeper who had a reasonable debut but this is the second game in a row where the game has been taken from them with a goal from a misplaced kickout. There has been too much chopping and changing of goalies over the last few years and who ever has responsibility for it needs questioning.

Clare made too many errors when in possession and didn't seem to have any great plan on how to open up the Galway defence. In saying that the Galway tackling was really hard and disciplined, Division 1 level and they swallowed any unfortunate Clare man caught in possession.

Tuam is some shambles of a ground and Clare had practically no support. In fairness to Collins and the footballers I don't know how they keep going. The effort that is needed to survive at this level is massive and the support they get for their efforts is embarrassing.

The Gaa don't help playing these games at this time of the year.

starting with the goalkeeper situation , going back to joe hayes we have had serious issues with kick outs , there was a championship game against kerry a few years back in killarney where we actually played well but we gifted them 2-01 from stupid short kick outs in the first ten minutes , we probably out scored them for the rest of the game but lost by that margin of 0-7 points

a game in armagh in the qualifiers where we were in control and were reduced to our 3rd keeper that day and lost it in the last 5 minutes from stray kick outs

the problem is everyone is happy enough with us picking up 5 or 6 points every year in division 2 and avoiding relegation , if the same issues happened next week in salthill in a dead rubber match brian lohan would be getting it from all angles before he reaches the team bus

collins has done excellent ,believe it or not hes a big nfl man and sets up accordingly , he hires in a coach to implement his game plan , some very impressive names like mick bohan and cian o neill in the last few years , he brings in a forwards coach and backs coach and oversees everything like a head coach in the nfl , the person to blame on the kick outs is diarmuid o'keeffe  , its his recommendations collins goes on in picking a keeper , its him that works on the kick outs and its no surprise that every keeper that has played for us has made mistakes , thats where the change should come

our fitness levels are fine , our defensive structure is fine , today manus doherty had a superb game on shane walsh top class , as was cian o'dea but we were toothless in attack and that has to change ,

Tuam stadium ain't great, though no pitch was good this weekend, but wait until you go to Salthill next Sunday. Add on 2 extra hours travel time absolute minimum.

if you can get to the car quick enough at full time get across devon park across presentation road and on to Eyre square in a 5 minute time line your laughing , otherwise your screwed ,

tuam is an excellent location straight off the motorway and loads of side roads to leave the town , plus its hardly 20 miles from the likes of athenry , if it was to be properly developed it would be a great spot , very unlikely though

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,093 ✭✭✭PeggyShippen

You could get the train to Galway and walk out to Salthill. I know Salthill is a disaster but Clare supporters have a reputation of running from matches. No pleasure in that. We don't seem to soak in an atmosphere lime the Limerick and Cork supporters. It's the big rush to the car

A large amount of the working population in this county are working up and down the country , things have changed massively since 2008 here

Clare people are like the nordies or the likes of Donegal/mayo people you could meet them at any corner of the country at any time,

I have been at several games in thurles where some of the lads with us are even heading back to Heathrow after a game

I left the 2018 all Ireland semi final against Galway and barely made my night shift for 12 o clock that night times have changed

The train station in Ennis used to resemble something you would see in New Delhi on the morning if a Clare game 20 years ago but not now

Fair play to the cork ( brilliant supporters) and Limerick people for keeping up the old tradition of staying and having the craic for hours after no matter the result but times have changed

Peter Duggan named to start this weekend, which is interesting. But maybe too little too late, always felt he’d need the whole league to get back to his best after so long out.

no SOD at all in the league so I guess we won’t be seeing him this year unfortunately.

    ditto Aidan McCarthy

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,315 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

Did anyone hear anything further on Rodgers’ injury ?

I think the team named v Galway is probably very very close to our championship 15, with hopefully Diarmuid Ryan coming back in

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,077 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

the word is he'l be back at some stage late next month , but you just dont know ,every sort of story knocking about about several players , ryan is expected to be back for mid April also

Starting with football , deaccent side , starting McMahon is long over due , pearse has served his penance for whatever he did wrong this time , very important to see jamie malone back at wing back he can cause havock from wing back , struggled as a wing forward lately was our best attacking option against galway last week

much much better performances needed from cleary ,tubridy and keelan in the forwards , keelan is our top scorer this year with 1-16 , the other two boys would really want to step up we badly need performances out of them in the next few games

Hurling , great to see duggan back and ian galvin back on the bench, 5 players playing for there lives at the moment in , mcinerney , golden, jason mccarthy david fitz and malone , this is the game they need to perform well in if they want to be starting come championship , fancy out chances up in salthill , galway have been very wasteful at times in front of goal through out the league an area we need to improve on ourselves at times but no time like the present to put it right

Some League 2022 Stats for Clare Footballers

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,077 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

the first thing that stands out there is , only 0-13 points in 5 games combined for tubs and cleary ,that has to improve , i know they are lads that owe us nothing but that has been our problem through out the league

it wont be good enough come championship , limerick are flying they won up in o'more park tonight , something we would be happy with and if we manage to get over the line we have conor sweeney and co to deal with in the semi final of munster , lose any of them games and its the tailteann cup

i am not overly worried about our status in division 2 , we nearly have enough done as it is but we could have done so much more against galway last week , our backs are fine , for example both Derry and Roscommon scored more against themselves then they did against us , the same i expect will happen tomorrow in owenbeg . and to make it worse we gifted goals to both teams from stray kickouts last two weeks

but we get one of tubridy/cleary to kick in to form and a lot of things kick into place

Cleary definitely needs to improve, should be in his prime. Clare just need to go at Meath from the start tomorrow, give them no respect. Meath have been bogey team for Clare recent. Don't think Clare haven't beaten since 1993

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,077 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

prior to a few years ago we never met much , we used to have a great record in the Kepak cup against them in the 90s , a challenge match on a yearly basis set up by sponsor and kilrush man noel keating

but yeah missed out narrowly on a super 8 place against them few years ago , they won the last two trips down here but hammered us out the gate in navan in 2018,

i cant see meath put up anything like that tomorrow but they might not have to sadly

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,373 ✭✭✭Gael85

Was a big improvement in Meath the last day. Brian Menton back is big plus for them.

Michael Dowenes (O'Currys) was captain of Meath team when Sean Boylan won first title as Meath manager- The Centenary Cup in 1984.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,077 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

it was but they went flat for a large portion of the second half , cork were poor fair enough but they were poor against us and we only drew against them , menton , o'sullivan and brian mcmahon are huge players for them and i dont think any of them played in the early rounds

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,077 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

    Clare 0-9 -0-10 Meath

Dour affair , same problems in front of goal as the galway game , poor shooting and too ponderes in attack , while cleary had a deaccent enough game tubridy and malone look like they have little confidence , backs played well again but worryingly Cillian Brennan and Manus Doherty both left the field injured , another goalkeeping error late in the game cost us again , stephen ryan had already nearly got caught in possession twice from leaving his goal and thinking he was niall morgan , lets just say he wasnt 3rd time lucky ,if thats the best goalkeeper in clare i give up.....

few positives were the introduction of connor jordan who kicked a fine score , keelan sextons lone efforts up front top class , pearse lillis cillian rouine and cian o, dea worked hard again

thankfully we don enough in the first 3 games to avoid the drop ,next year its four home games again , if Offaly stay up and Derry fail to go up to division 1 our away games will be against them 2 and meath , crucially the home games will be against the two up from division 3 and down from division 1

    clare scorers

    Eoin Cleary 0-3

    Keelan sexton 0-3

    David tubridy 0-1

    Conor Jordan 0-1

    Emmitt Mcmahon 0-1

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,077 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

any one at the hurling , listened to most of it such was the poor fair in the park , sounded like ryan taylor , and kelly had good games , more problems in the half forward line paul flanagan had another good day out by the sound of things

sounds like we are asking too much of patrick crotty just yet hes probably that bit too young just yet

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,315 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

Given the 4 Munster games will come thick and fast, we’ll need the whole squad including Crotty to play a role.

Good to see Gough and Aaron Fitzgerald playing the full 70 in the backs.

Doubt they’ll start as Hayes and Cleary are nailed on starters, but we may need them at some stage.

Also positive to see Ian Galvin playing for a half.

5 weeks now to the championship. Gives some time for the minor injuries to heal up.

Didn't make the game today but that's a poor result at home against a Meath team that were in crisis a few weeks ago.

3 defeats on the trot and playing a dull brand of football it's very hard to be excited about surviving.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,077 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

its a results business , we dont have the attacking options available at the moment so it is what it is

They are awful to watch They had a bit of pace and adventure about their attack up to a year or 2 ago, now they leave Sexton up on his own and attack slowly with minimal risk. They are keeping the score down at the other end but they are not creating enough to win games. There is plenty of pace available with Griffin, Malone, Cleary, McMahon but the no risk game isn't utilising this.

They are trying to ape the top teams but the top teams have a kicking game to give them an extra dimension. Clare don't, it's all gone very stale and they will earn it to beat Limerick in the championship.
