Got a message on public jobs this morning for stage 1, says it’ll be mid/late April for stage 1 testing. Best of luck to everyone!

Got a text today to check my publicjobs account. Stage one assessments start next month!

How are people getting on training?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2 bluelou47

Was thinking about buying that career services stage 1 course. Not sure tho, what’s everyone else thinking?

For some balance, I personally do not feel I could go back to frontline policing, I would consider going back for something in the background!

I left as the demands placed on you are pressures I have personally never felt in any job. I think the regular unit is unfairly given absolutely everything thrown at it and remember some of these members are only in the door and given fairly serious workloads off the bat. I took stock of what was around me, did I think firstly the workload match the renumeration, I didn't think it really did (yes there is OT but as someone mentioned, that on your time and in some cases it can be directed, which means if your have AL booked, forget about it) along with some other things I decided to walk from a job I fought tooth and nail to get into.

You need a combination of things to go right for you, a good station, a good/supportive unit that are happy to help you fully and your own moral not to be heavily burned with a heavy workload.

In a way I am glad members are walking away from the job, its the only way it will ever change for the better. I do encourage people to go for it, but seriously chat with people in the job, its a commitment going over the process/training/ongoing training after appoinment.

Appreciate the insight, my own partner is in the job coming up to 3 years and has similar views to yours. I’m surprised my partner is still in the job to be honest cause if i’m honest it sounds like it has more cons than pros. Still dying to go for it myself though as I feel if i dont, i’ll always regret it. Ps. I’m currently 7 years into a good secure job with a decent salary and in a job where i’ve had 4 promotions. So I’m taking 1 hell of a gamble myself

  • Registered Users Posts: 88 ✭✭Physeter

    Thanks for your insight.

I'm sure a lot of people in this thread would love the opportunity to pick your brain about your experience in AGS and I hope you stick around and impart what you can. I've been in a similar position before where I had to abandon a certain career path, and I echo what you're saying in that it's likely one of the hardest things you could experience in your life. So well done to you and I hope things are going better for you these days.

If I may ask, would you be able to elaborate further on the types of demands that a typical member would find challenging? A great draw to the role is the dynamic nature of the work but I can imagine some might be blindsided by certain responsibilities as they progress into real work.

Hard shout, I was similar situation to yourself, I suppose I was lucky in a sense too that I had an industry I could go back into quite easily. I still do not regret trying it out, in fact I think I am glad I did do it. Also from what you are saying, I think you would either get back in with your company or be employable again in that industry. I suppose it is time you do not get back if it does not work out.

Like the regular has defiently more cons going for it than pros! However, if you make tracks to get off the regular unit into something else, you could end up with a nice job, but there are no timelines for getting off the regular, some get off it quickly, some are 10 years on it, some entire careers. Like, not all days are bad either you can have a grand day on the regular or you could have what one lad on my unit had, I think he was on public office duty for about 5/6 tours in a row, you could see the stress in the lads face on tour number 4. For people not fimilar in small/medium size stations, there might be one member doing public office, which includes public counter, radio, telephone, logging calls on C&C, looking after custody records/prisioners and taking complaints if members of the public report at counter (might have missed a few other jobs).

  • Registered Users Posts: 469 ✭✭Willie Stroker 1976

Glad it worked out for you though and you we’re able to get back doing what you done prior to joining. Yeah, have heard about working in the public office alright, sometimes not even getting time to go to the bathroom. 4-5 days on it in a row sounds horrendous, my partners place they do 1 shift a week each covering it, godbless that chap getting 4-5 days on it, heard you’ll get the crappy enough ones reported over the counter too adding to your workload. I’m hoping i’ll try it and love it, my company now has new contracts for people hired so I couldn’t see myself returning for that reason if it didn’t work out. Heres hoping it does.

  • Registered Users Posts: 685 ✭✭✭TallGlass2

I suppose you'd nearly be better to have a chat with a member if you know any, each member will have different options. My intention with my post is not to turn people off joining. I just want to say to people have a good understanding about all the aspects of the job before commiting to it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 685 ✭✭✭TallGlass2

Thanks! I'd say go try it, however always be prepared to walk. Seriously, there's nearly a shame of walking away from it, you've told everyone etc.. I tell you from myself leaving, no one could care. Yeah it was unusal now in fairness not sure how it ended up that way, but usually its one tour and come the last hour your nearly be hunting down the member from the next unit to take over!

    Hi lads how’s it going.

I was just doing a bit of study there and read that the numerical test is to be done with the calculator on the laptop.

That you’re not allowed to use a handheld one or roughwork paper.

Can anybody confirm this for me?

Its going to change my study approach now because I was using both a hand held calculator and a notepad for the material that I have.

    That’s correct

She also highlighted a strong interest in the latest Garda recruitment campaign, with over 10,000 applications received.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15 GDA hopeful

    Thanks.

I suppose now is the time to be practicing it anyway couple of weeks and we’ll all be handy at doing the tests that way.

    Cheers.

  • Registered Users Posts: 945 ✭✭✭WhiteWalls

Was the deadline date extended for applications?

  • Registered Users Posts: 469 ✭✭Willie Stroker 1976

I haven’t seen anything to support that anyway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15 GDA hopeful

No I didn’t hear anything about an extended deadline either.

I was talking to a neighbour last night though and he got his test day for the 21st of April.

Wondering has anyway else got their date?

I haven’t got my one yet.

Nothing yet in terms of dates for me just the message saying mid to late April

  • Registered Users Posts: 15 GDA hopeful

Yeah same here, well we’ll probably get a date this week considering it’s the 10th.

  • Registered Users Posts: 469 ✭✭Willie Stroker 1976

How are ya all getting on are ya’s doing any preparation stuff online for it? I’m guessing it should be any day now we will hear something

  • Registered Users Posts: 15 GDA hopeful

Yeah doing the career services course there it’s okay but tight to finish time wise.

But I’m told that’s the way it’s made.

    How are you finding it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 469 ✭✭Willie Stroker 1976

Similar, ok but the timing is the part thats worrying me, especially the ones where you have 2 minutes and 4 questions

  • Registered Users Posts: 469 ✭✭Willie Stroker 1976

    Boom, update regarding tests

  • Registered Users Posts: 25 minilad

Is anyone using the gardaip stage 1 course? Would ye recommend it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 469 ✭✭Willie Stroker 1976

Prob be handy to have that or career services atleast that or do the practice material they sent out, I’ve not used the practice material they sent out yet so no idea how good or bad it is

  • Registered Users Posts: 23 Ditser

I'm doing their course. was recommended by another lad on this thread. V good and they are happy to take calls too - rang them yesterday with a few questions

Hi everyone, I was reading the familiarisation handbook a few days ago and it stated "you are strongly advised to complete all assessments early in the assessment window", with the assessment window being Tuesday 19th at 9am to Monday 25th at 5pm. Would I be penalised for doing it say on Thursday or Friday instead of Tuesday (the earliest day) or does it make no difference at all? Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭laoisgem

It makes no difference, they advise you not to leave it until the last minute in case you run into any problems.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3 Mochua96

Hi lads, has anyone been given a specific date or time in-between the 19th-25th or is it a case of just sitting the assessment whenever suits yourself in between that time period? Thanks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 138 ✭✭Turbolounge

Thanks for the responses. It has to be done between 9am on the 19th and 5pm on the 25th. Before/after that won't be accepted.

  • Registered Users Posts: 469 ✭✭Willie Stroker 1976

Best of luck to ya all! This is the moment we’ve been waiting for.

  • Registered Users Posts: 38 Briano1996

If anyone has done the test would they mind sharing how it went, what style where the numerical question in. Similar to that on the careers services?

  • Registered Users Posts: 15 GDA hopeful

Yeah just completed the tests there.

self assessment was fine very same as career services.

verbal was fine well drilled for that too.

I found the numerical tricky now started well but it got tough nothing I could do so I threw in a few guesses and finished okay the end.

  • Registered Users Posts: 469 ✭✭Willie Stroker 1976

well done, it did say in the booklet, that it will use that adaptive technology where if your doing pretty well, it will give harder questions, so take some comfort in that , maybe you were doing too well hence it got harder

Did ya go with the onscreen calculator or a physical calculator after?

For anyone that has done the test how was the proctoring done with showing ID etc? And could yous use roughwork sheets and physical calculator? Thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 25 minilad

It's just a box for the camera that comes up and tells you to scan the room and show your desk pretty simple and only takes a minute, you also have to show your ID in the screen for a few seconds just hold it up to the camera. I used a calculator and rough work page but it says you can only take them out at the numerical stage.

  • Registered Users Posts: 469 ✭✭Willie Stroker 1976

Thanks for that, Did it make you do a 360 degree to show the room? Im using a desktop to do the test a 360 of the room will be a pain

  • Registered Users Posts: 25 minilad

I can't remember if it specifically said that but I did it anyway

  • Registered Users Posts: 26 jcoyne22

    Hi @GDA hopeful ,

Did you find the sample material any use i found it a right pain when it wouldn't give a solution for a question that i got wrong. if so were the questions much the same like mainly graphs and percentages or what

. 😯 thanks not looking forward to it at all not a big fan of maths. 😣.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15 GDA hopeful

Yeah career services was very good.

I did a couple of courses and I had Garda IP too but career services was the best.

I just said I’m going to do it and get it out of the way instead of thinking about it all week.

The maths was all graphs , percentages how much diesel cars were burning for a company all stuff we had covered but as someone pointed out there the questions get harder if you get a few right so it’s going to be different for everyone.

I was flying at the start then it got very hard.

  • Registered Users Posts: 20 hoops67

just completed mine there. it was all going well until numerical. Found it quite hard even after doing career services for the past few months.

Was it the questions that were difficult or the timing? Going to do mine tomorrow have been using GardaIP practise tests

  • Registered Users Posts: 1 tomhenryford22

I just finished the assessments. I am a bit in shock. Was it just me or was the numerical section more a logical reasoning section. Where were the actual numeric's?....I'm very disappointed tbh.

  • Registered Users Posts: 469 ✭✭Willie Stroker 1976

Was feeling more confident about the numerical part of the test than any other part but the reviews left by a few of you guys already has me nervous about it now.
