Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

So what. The law stats "obvious goal scoring opportunit", The obvious is important. He was going away from goal and there was a covering defender.

Also cresswell fouled, but the opportunity was still there. That dembele flopped to the ground was entirely his choice and he gave up the opportunity that he had himself.

BT commentator reckons the Dembele playing for Lyon is the one who played for Spurs... (they do have the same name, but the latter one is 34 and playing in China..)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,328 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Eventually Bt highlight that the initial mistake was by different Lyon defender

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

    Ndombele equalises!

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

Zouma was going to in the box at the same time and the angle would have been not exactly be a guaranteed goal. They changed the laws several times to make fouls and things like that punishable but not as stupidly severe. It's not a red card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,328 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

If you think that’s a covering defender good for you but the ref’s assessor will stick that down as a good decision.

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

Ah a still. Good one. That doesnt show Dembele and the ball going to the right there amd Zouma is running straight and covering that ground and therefore closing off the angle.

It was a bad decision. He dived. A con job. It was not an Obvious goal scoring opportunity, which you don't seem to be able to grasp is the important part of that particular law (no. 12)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

    Ndombele is running the show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,023 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Zouma should have been a covering defender, but if you rewatch the video, he inexplicably starts slowing down a bit before the tackle, as if he already sees it as a lost cause. No idea what he's at, but instead of accelerating he's decelerating. Might well have been why they deciding he wasn't going to make it.

the “my opinion is more important than an actual evidence from the incident” viewpoint.

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

Not at all. The law states an obvious goal scoring opportunity. He didn't deny an obvious one. Dembele dived after the contact ended. Yes there was some obstruction, yes its a foul, but he did not deny a clear goalscoring opportunity. It was a yellow card and no more

In fact if thats an obvious goal scoring chance, Dembele is taking it on. He knows its not.

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

Maybe he also see it unfolding as if he's going out wide and it;'s not as dangerous. Maybe he's thinking about his cat

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

West Ham in a great position to pile on some pressure and one of their own fans runs on and calls the game to a halt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,328 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

When you say he didn’t deny an obvious goal scoring opportunity, that is just your opinion.

Dembele was ahead of every defender, heading into the box, and ready to straighten up and to try and beat the keeper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,023 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Ultimately I think it comes down to whether or not Dembele would've been able to get an unobstructed shot on goal away - even if from a more awkward right position - without Zouma getting there. Looks to me like he would've.

    Elsewhere, some atmosphere in Frankfurt!

Nice to see all 4 ties still very much alive after the first leg anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,328 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Maybe you’re wrong. I know it’s impossible on the discussion forums to be incorrect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Decent result for West Ham given the red card. Think there's a few twists and turns left in the tie.

All of the 2nd legs still in the balance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,286 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

Those saying Zouma would have got there watch it again he slowed right down for it. Was the correct decision, but the player was looking for it.

Antonio came across really well in a sky interview I saw yesterday, he's quite funny. It's enough for me to want West Ham to win now.

VAR got the referee to look at a handball in the box where the player jumped away from the wall at the free kick and handalled the ball. Referee stuck with his decision despite strong disagreement from the VAR official. Gotta say I thought the referee was wrong.

leicester through to the semis in the conference league, to face roma or bodo glimt (1-2 on aggregate).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Great performance by Nkunku to send Leipzig through against Atalanta. Should be one of the most highly sought after players in the summer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Rangers have already levelled their tie against Braga.

And now they're ahead. Only five minutes played. Second goal chalked off for a handball.

Wow, Barca behind to Eintracht at the Camp Nou.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Oh my goodness what a goal by Borre to give Eintracht a two goal lead. Goal of the night.

Dawson gives West Ham the lead from a corner.

That was some goal for Frankfurt. 2-0 now to them

Rice gives West Ham a 2 goal lead.

Rangers also into a 2 goal lead.

3-0 West Ham via Bowen. Hammers look like they're into the semis for a meeting with Eintracht.

Uh oh. We always fcuk it up when we go 3-0 up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Weird moment in the Barca/Eintracht game. Barca want a pen for handball and the ref goes over to look at the monitor but the screen isn't working. He has to get on to a headset to communicate with the VAR room and he's told it's not a pen. Didn't look to be a penalty so the right decision was reached. Been a very lengthy stoppage as they try to fix the technical issue.

    Kostic makes it 3-0 Eintracht!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,441 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

Dawson has turned into peak Paolo Maldini today. He has, in my opinion, been Moyes' greatest signing during this stint.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,023 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Some setback for Xavi's Barca... had looked like they were moving the right direction since he came in, and winning a Europa League would've been a big statement of their resurgence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,967 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Thing is that var incident, which I thought was a penalty, where the referee stuck with his on field decision was a huge factor in the game. If the game went 1-1 there it might have been totally different. The Leipzig penalty came when Atalanta had pushed forward to try and find an equaliser.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Great goal by Busquets. Nine minutes for them to find 2 more.

West Ham through with a great win. Rice bossed the midfield. Dawson with a huge performance. Thought Lyon, Toko Ekambi aside, were awfully disappointing. That should be the end of Peter Bosz since he needed to do well in this tournament.

West Ham must be favourites for the cup now Barca are out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,023 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

I'd guess Leipzig? They'll have a semi against Rangers or Braga, while West Ham have a tougher tie against Frankfurt.

Barca back in it via Depay's pen. Eintracht down to ten. Do they have time for another?

No! Eintracht through. Deserved win for them. Knauff with a great showing. Dortmund will be looking forward to getting him back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Rangers must be there now. Into the lead and Braga now down to 9.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,441 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

Absolute madness from Madeiros for Braga. Gets a yellow card and then decides the best course of action is to scream in the referee's face and immediately gets a second yellow to put them down to 9. Has completely ruined his teams chances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,168 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

That was braindead by the Braga player. Down to 9 players now. Rangers have had a huge amount of luck in this competition, especially with the draws they've gotten.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,023 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

    Mad looking at the semi finalists of this and the conference league... if you were blindly given the two lists of teams, it'd be very hard to pick which was the higher ranked tournament;

Leicester, Roma, Marseille, and Feyenord as opposed to Leipzig, Rangers (likely), West Ham, and Frankfurt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,508 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Crinklewood

Referee had been great in Rangers Braga match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,023 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

How Arfield hasn't put Rangers safely out of sight I've no idea! 2 incredible chances in quick succession - first one he had loads of time and just skewed it wide, then hits the crossbar. Mad stuff.
