NCT - expired Tax

I've an NCT on Tuesday and have just noticed that my tax is out of date.

I've renewed tax online but will they do an NCT on a car with expired tax cert ?

Yes they will do test whether tax or insurance are displayed.

Ah. Thanks for that. I don't think the car would pass first time anyway, but do you think they'd do the full test regardless of tax being out ?

Makes no difference to nct if the car hasn’t had a valid disc of any type in 20 years

Yes it could be out for 20 years, they will still fully test it.

If it's a diesel and the engine management light is on they won't test it and also if it's like a complete shed inside likely to be a danger to the person testing or to result in contamination of other cars to be tested they won't test it, for example lots of dog hair.

You sure they won’t test a diesel with an engine light on? I think its just a reason for failure no?

But they’ll test a petrol car with the engine light on 🤔?

Either way, is there a way to just pull the fuse for the engine light?

Yes that was the case.

If you pull the fuse out the tester will notice there's no light visible when they turn the engine to on before it starts up.

You if you drive a diesel you have to sign a disclaimer to say your car is fit to be tested. For petrol you don’t have to sign anything.

You can take the bulb out behind the dash but it will most likely fail and is a terrible idea regardless of NCT

I understood that since they now plug in cars at the NCT to check for any OBD faults, the days of petrols passing the NCT with the engine light on are over.

Under the previous ruled, petrols only passed the NCT with the light on provided it wasn't a fault that caused the car to fail on emissions. And let's face it, most of the time the light comes on is to do with an emissions related issue.
