Cheers! Last time I played was August and it wasn't qualifying and the reason they gave was the temp green.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,631 ✭✭✭willabur

They moved the green close enough to original green to qualify

Played in the Portmarnock winter series yesterday. Golf wasn't great but course in amazing condition. We played off the very back which was long but there wasn't much wind. I struggled with my putting but was very impressed with the course. The bunkering is incredible. Highly recommended it and for €55 is a bargain.

Willabur - how is the general feeling on how the course is doing out there at present - improving or same or going down ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,631 ✭✭✭willabur

In terms of the conditioning of the course it has never been better, I think that is as much to do with less traffic over what has been a very mild winter so far. Not hearing as much whinging about the timesheet these days. I can be flexible enough with regard to who I play with and what time I play on a sunday so it has been fine by me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,591 ✭✭✭blue note

I literally sent a motion into the AGM moaning about the timesheet last week :) I don't mind not getting to play when I don't have my name down early and the timesheet is full. Except when you see the results published and the number who played is nothing like a full timesheet! I sent the motion in on the Friday and then got up on the Saturday morning to play with 3 people I didn't know. The weather was awful driving out, I suspected people would drop out. When I was due to go out, the 3 people I was down to play with were noshows. But it was okay because there was a no show in the group ahead, so I was able to slot in with them.

I'd love to know the rate of people that actually show up for their tee time. I suspect it's shocking. I'm regularly out on a Sunday in less than a fourball because someone didn't show up. Maybe my perception is off, but there were 80 in the competition last week. At fourballs starting at 8:00, if everyone showed up the last group would have teed off at 11:10. The timesheet was full for the morning, maybe one or two took their names off the night before, maybe a few played but not in the comp. But there are definitely a lot of no shows in the club.

I'm usually trying to get out early or get my name down with the brothers in law and if we don't book it when the timesheet goes up we haven't a hope. Even though if people took their names off and we kept an eye on the timesheet we'd definitely get a slot for at least 2 if we kept an eye on the timesheet. I can't imagine my motion will go anywhere, but I wouldn't mind it being mentioned that it's an issue.

The course is in great nick though. An advantage of all the no shows I suppose!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,639 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

That's were the BRS purse comes into play I guess. If it no show in our place the comp fee is taken from your purse. Have to take yourself out by 4pm day before at latest in my place. Stops people just booking and no-showing. Not perfect, but helps

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,631 ✭✭✭willabur

I take it back, there is some whinging going on ;)

5-6 feet of dunes lost to the sea at strand hill last week- between that and rosses point 2 great links at risk

Playing all 3 in Rosapenna next month. Which would people consider the 'worst' of the three.

Looking forward to the St Patricks, will want a fresh head for it.

At least you put worst in inverted commas. It's like asking which member of the Dutch women's hockey team is the ugliest.

🤣 off now to Google the Dutch womens hockey team

Does anyone know if the fairways are back in play in Waterville?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 863 ✭✭✭thewobbler

OTM is the least eye catching of the 3 as the front 9 in particular is set in lower dunes and away from the sea. But it’s a fine golf course and the back 9 is superb. it’s the shortest and easiest walk.

Sandy Hills is a beautiful brute. Apart from the stunning 6th and 3rd, it mostly rolls into each other and you won’t find yourself remembering individual holes. But it’s rhythm is sensational and it’s a great course for letting it rip off the tee then climb a dune to look for your ball.

St Patricks is the star of the show, an absolutely extraordinary golf course, which has a series of brilliant reveals and memorable holes. Its conditioning won’t yet match the more established pair but you won’t mind, trust me.

    ——-

Mine is a drinking man’s society and for fun and hangover friendliness, if we had to pick 2 it would probably be OTM and St Patrick’s. Sandy Hills shouldn’t be relegated by anyone at anytime, but it battered us into submission last July.

Playing Murvagh next week, 2 open comps on the bank Holiday days, 35 quid for entry so can't go wrong there

    Murvagh is brilliant

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 863 ✭✭✭thewobbler

Just back from a weekend in Murvagh.

the course isn’t quite in the best of shapes. Greens were pole forked recently, which should be sorted by the time you arrive…. but they’re generally patchy and look like they’ve had a tough winter. There’s bits of GUR on most holes and 5-6 bunkers under reconstruction - though you’d expect that surely this time of year.

Still an enjoyable course, a good but fair test (rough is generally manageable), and the warmest of welcomes from all staff. But you won’t be getting the links greens you’ve been dreaming off over the winter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Cheers for that heads up. Luckily I've played it before so I've experienced it at its peak. Would be nice to have it in proper condition but I won't complain too much. With how my game is, the less bunkers possible the better. First game since September so could be grim

Mourne GC have open week from 8th May to end if week, so that cover Royal County Down

This right here is an astute and accurate snapshot of Rosapenna's three courses. Sandy Hills has been made a lot easier... or perhaps 'accessible'... in recent years. It was the toughest course in Ireland (IMO) but fairways have been widened and some tee boxes and bunkers relocated. Personally, I thought the condition of St Patrick's was magnificent but a lot of people are suggesting it needs to settle in... so anyone visiting can judge for themselves. I certainly wouldn't want to see the course over-manicured - that's not its vibe.

You’re right there Kevin. St Patrick’s wasn’t designed to be over-manicured. It’s natural golf. I guess what I mean in terms of conditioning is that when I played (first weekend open to public tbf!) there were a few sparse patches here and there, and I’d guess that over time there will become a clearer definition between green and fairway (which there’s really no need for).

Ballyliffin (played in Nov) enjoys a similar kind of disparity between its course “style” rather than conditioning. The Old feels more natural. Some would describe that feeling as “rougher round the edges”. Whereas I think most people without any information at all would be able to pick out Glashedy and Sandy Hills as having the same designer. There’s a clear symmetry in polished presentation between those too.

I'm booked into Rosapenna St Pats and Old Tom in June. I'm very excited about this! We went to Donegal two years ago and had three incredible courses in Narin, Portsalon and Cruit island. Narin is the best course I've ever play and Cruit the most picturesque. I have it in my head that St Pats is going to replace Narin for me. But I'm pretty sure no place will ever take my breath away like Cruit island. Spectacular.

Have Carne, Enniscrone and Rosses Point booked in for mid July, so looking forward to that.

The par 3 over the cliffs in Cruit is absolutely stunning.

  • Registered Users Posts: 83 ✭✭CorkBoyInDub

Might be up in Donegal in July, and staying near Narin and Portnoo. Opens on Wednesdays and Saturdays for €50/€65. Has anyone here played there before? Looks amazing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,591 ✭✭✭blue note

Literally two posts above I said it was the best course I've ever played!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 503 ✭✭✭swededmonkey

Murvagh is about 40 minutes from Portnoo and run open comps on Wednesdays for €35. Highly recommended

Played it a few times as wife is from that neck of the woods so it's close by. Lovely spot, although haven't played it since it's been done up. Supposed to be a better course now for it.

On the area as a whole, the beach is amazing there. Ardara is lovely spot with some nice pubs (Nancy's, Corner House). Best County for golf and holidaying

Played there last year and the condition was close to perfect. So have to disagree strongly with that

  • Registered Users Posts: 33 sean.ocall

Played both courses at Ballybunion over the weekend. This was my first time on a links course so I have nothing to compare it to, but I was totally blown away. I'm still buzzing from it. I can remember every single hole from the 36 in detail. Looking forward to exploring a bit further over the Summer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 503 ✭✭✭swededmonkey

Haven't played there since July last year, but can't say it stood out for being in poor condition IMO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,827 ✭✭✭fred funk }{

I've played it every August for the last 3 years and it's has progressively gotten worse. Now, it could be just that time of year but greens very slow and knarly. General condition of the course hasn't been great.

I will say that it's a superb course and a real test but not in the condition that I'd expect and most from our group that travel, agree.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,887 ✭✭✭DuckSlice

Booked in for May for the 3 courses. Cant wait.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,591 ✭✭✭blue note

Lots seem to be going to rosapenna. I think we're right to do it now before the American tours start going there in greater volumes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,887 ✭✭✭DuckSlice

4 of us do an annual trip away and we normally do 3 different courses. But this involves a lot of travelling. Last year we done Portmarnock, RCD and Ardglass. Rosapenna is perfect for 3 days golf and only having to travel 5 minutes between rounds. And they are doing the 3 course pass for €195, serious value.

  • Registered Users Posts: 402 ✭✭Shank Williams

What’s the hotel like in Rosapenna for leaving the missus to her own devices while out golfing

like to go to a place with a spa etc for that reason but Rosapenna looks a bit old school and sparse facilities wise for the money v likes o

Booking opened today for this according to the flyer, anyone get on?

they only had a answerphone message most of the day, sent an email too but heard nowt back

They just tweeted saying phones going all day, working through all requests

  • Registered Users Posts: 408 ✭✭IAmTitleist

    Sounds like nonsense.

I rang all day and majority of times it went straight to "user busy". The few times it did actually ring out nobody ever answered.

Probably another case of an Open Week in name only. I'd be shocked too many actual visitors get to play in these competitions.

  • Registered Users Posts: 92 ✭✭The Aul Switcharoo

I got in. I rang 88 times over the course of the day and persistence paid off. They said on the phone they were flat out alright. Not enough staff. Got my tee time anyway!

Playing the Old Course in Lahinch next week for the first time. Beyond excited!

    Any tips? Haha

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 863 ✭✭✭thewobbler

    So cynical.

i’d say the average conversation for booking one of these slots is 10 mins.

    “looking for Monday”

”we’ve only a few slots left, about 4pm”

    ”too late. what about Thirsday”

”yes that’s stroke play, plenty of availability”

”stroke play…. No, we couldn’t do that. One of the lads would quit forever if it was a five hour round. How’s Wednesday looking?”

”it’s the Annesley and there’s room still”

    ”what’s the Annesley?”

cue 2 mins of humming and haaing.

“Monday at 4 will do well. We want the big course. Can I book for 4 players”.

”that’ll be £280. Can I get your credit card details?”

”what, you’ve to pay up front? I’m not sure if two of them will go! Can I leave a deposit instead?”

    ”thats not how it works”.

    ”okay I’ll call you back”.

They could just use an automated online booking service like every other club in the country. They seem like a very amateur outfit. Mad to believe they get to play on one of the best courses around.

  • Registered Users Posts: 696 ✭✭✭fungie

They also aren't answering emails even though it specifically says you can book using it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 863 ✭✭✭thewobbler

They’re taking bookings for courses they don’t own.

I’m sure it’s entirely possible. And I’m sure it wouldn’t be difficult to set up.

i’d expect they discuss doing it every year too.

But I expect that when they balance up paying for it, getting it set up and getting staff trained up, for one week a year…. going back to pen and paper has more benefits.

  • Registered Users Posts: 696 ✭✭✭fungie

I would've thought the members would benefit from a booking system all year.

I'm just baffled by how shambolic it is.

  • Registered Users Posts: 408 ✭✭IAmTitleist

I did eventually get through after 150+ calls.

Literally sat for an hour and as soon as it came up user busy i immediately rang again.

Coulnd't get booked in for the Friday team comp unfortunately so playing the singles on Monday.

I've played the course about 5/6 times so wouldn't be arsed with this booking malarkey in future.

  • Registered Users Posts: 696 ✭✭✭fungie

I've probably rang more. It's not even busy this morning, it's just ringing through.
