Anyway of sorting out a car where the Irish reg doesn't work at the motor factors

I can bring up the parts I think using the UK reg on the UK sites but the Irish reg doesnt work here online or instore

It's a pith cos theres a good few different models of astra

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,454 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Get part numbers off the uk sites

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,724 ✭✭✭zg3409

No. I attempted to fix the problem of the wrong parts coming up for a car. It was impossible to give feedback to the suppliers of the data. Local motor factors and some Irish websites use a reg look.up service offered by one or more providers. In some cases they get official from manufacturer information, but for many cars they seem to just suggest parts that likely fit that model and won't 100% guarantee to fit. Some suggest 3 or 4 different size size filters for the same reg car, indicating they are not sure.

Often parts are relatively cheap from main dealers, now I tend to walk into motor factors with air filter in hand so they give me right size, for oil filters I keep a record of model number so I can get right one next year. I find micks garage quite bad at suggesting correct parts based on reg. It's not an easy task as manufacturers during build often switch parts when they run out of stock and then may switch back later in the same year. There are often low power and high power variants of same size engine for same year.

I got one of those throttle boosters a pedal booster to be exact and they work by reducing lag from accelerator. It has a few different modes so sport sport+ and race. They work on drive by wire cars which I'd say every new car these days is done.

I was a bit sceptical but the device actually works. All you do is tap the accelerator like you drive normally but it registers as if you floored it. The only down sides I found is it drinks fuel which I suppose would be correct if every time you pulled off you floored it.

I actually got better 0-100km/h times too since installing the device.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,657 ✭✭✭CIP4

But would it not make the accelerator very on/off as opposed to gradual making the car hard to drive normally or can you easily turn it off for normal driving ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

Not really you just release the pedal more. There are actually four modes city, sport, race and plus. You can switch it off as well. I was driving around in sport mode and decided to switch it off at a set of traffic lights and all I was thinking was after switching it off is the car felt heavy. Just the lag making me think that after driving around till that point in sport mode.

The ancient lexus IS250 passed it's NCT not too long ago. Red battery light still displayed constantly since I replace the alternator over a year ago. Just keeping it on the road really, doesn't move all that much these days. Although it did need an O2 sensor recently, but it was very handy to swap out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,454 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Are you anywhere as attached to it as you were to the 325ci?

Any comparisons to draw, both similar in that they’re 2.5 RWD 6 pots.

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

Not in the slightest, I loved the BMW, and glad to have owned it for as long as I did. It was a perfect car for my 20's, but had to move on. The IS is grand and comfortable, I reckon it's a bit quicker than the 325Ci too. The Lexus was probably the wrong choice of car when I got it, but sure it's what I have now.

We have an Octavia 1.0 tsi auto as the main car and Lexus is mine in case I need it. But really I don't have much use for it, I've pondered just getting rid of the Lexus altogether but I think for now it makes some sense to hold onto it. Not a particularly good time to try and replace it with something else given the market. It has new tyres and fresh NCT, getting ready to tax it now, so it's probably good for another year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

And it passed the NCT with the battery light on. Did the tester say anything about it to you?

    @Alanstrainor

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

Second NCT with the red battery light on now. I say it to them before they take the car in, and they say it has no bearing on the test. I mention it now more to let them know it's not about to die on the ramp!

Any good vw specialist in Dublin? My current one is out of workspace and car needs few bits done.

    Thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

That auto hold is a nightmare. I was at a round about with a slight hill and my car enables auto hold automatically and I was pulling out what I thought would be quickly and the car slumps. I thought I was in third gear and stopped a bit into the roundabout. Highly dangerous checked which gear I was in and it was first and then pulled out.

I mean I was thinking I will shoot out before that car comes around the roundabout but car said no.(damn auto hold highly dangerous).

I mean I noticed it in the past but it's still fresh in my mind now so i said I will mention it here.

    What car is that?

is it where it holds the brakes for a few seconds after you stop, or is it electric handbrake?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

Dacia Sandero. It must have a sensor to detect you are on a slope and automatically engages a brake some where front or rear(I'm not sure which, but I'm pretty sure it's on the rear) It hasn't an electric handbrake just a old fashioned lever/handle style.

As I said it engages automatically even without me engaging the handbrake. It's annoying though as it stalls the car a bit on take off. Enough to slow down a quick maneuverer like I was trying to pull in my post above.

Edit: Just to add it doesn't engage all the time just on a slope.

Oh yeah, I’ve the same thing on my (non-Dacia) car, can’t say it’s ever been a problem though. I know I can turn it off via coding. Maybe drive another and see if it dies the same thing.

I just re-read you post colm it a feature to stop you rolling backwards on a hill on take off.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,454 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Yep, same thing as on the Octavia (and probably most cars I guess) so. Does it release after 3 or 4 seconds?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

It does yea but I wanted to shoot out in front of a car coming around the roundabout before they got to me and those few seconds are time I didn't have. I suppose driving carefully is what they want and not to be shooting around roundabouts.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,454 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I’d still raise it with the dealer.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

I won't bother it works properly just doesn't go with my style of driving out in front of people.(not directly in front but when there is a few seconds of a gap) I also was in eco mode and didn't floor it either so there is that too.

For anyone not following Mad4motors on YouTube, he just posted another great video in the last few days. A camper conversion. Even if you're not into campers, it's still worth a watch.

See some awful conversions for sale on Donedeal, 'did it myself during lockdown'. No sh1t, Sherlock.

Night and day compared to this guy.

I have that hill assist thing on the Fiesta, can't say I've had any issue using it. Actually find it handy enough, especially when the car behind decides to park on your bumper when you're on a hill. Happens a fair bit on Fishamble street in Dublin.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,657 ✭✭✭CIP4

I’d imagine having it in Eco mode is at least part of the problem. As it basically just makes the accelerator less sensitive to save fuel. So your trying to take of in a hurry letting the clutch out quickly and the car is just bogging down as it’s not getting enough power. Any car I had with Eco mode when on it made it dead enough to drive unless you floored it.

I heard good things about these

I wanted a DSG oil change but in the end I just went to main dealer. They were around same price (main dealers pricing varies between every garage) and their location and lack of interest. They actually said they were very busy and said for automatic gearbox to contact someone else:

"Pat Cassidy his number is 014299944  that's all he does is auto transmission as i will be tied up for the next month"

All good garages seem to be crazy busy these days.

If you are a bit clearer on car, what needs done, exactly where you live etc someone might be able to direct you better. Some garages specialise in diesel engines, others fault repairs, others routine maintenance. Some are cheap, others good ...

Just wondering what people think about this. My wife had her Toyota Yaris hybrid serviced in the main dealers last week. Today it had the NCT and it failed on the rear brake disks. Only 180 miles was done since the service. Toyota are supposed to check the brakes as part of the service and it obviously wasn't done or wasn't done properly. Now it needs a re-test (28 quid), and to organise the repairs. This is a pain in the back side with work and then not having access to the car. We're not going back to the dealers for the repairs but would ye be getting on to them with a complaint anyway? Getting a service there was a massive inconvenience in the end.
