Possibly because they wanted Ukraine as an 'intact prize'.

Yes, I read that a smaller rescue vessel also sank when it tried to come alongside the Moskva (caught up in the explosions and fire).

Just look at the test firing results, they would have been pretty confident, otherwise it wouldn't have been put in service.

Note how incredibly low it comes in at, probably causing damage that extends below the waterline - glug, glug.

Only if your hitting targets that isn't covered by air defenses ,the Americans won't fly b52s over contested airspace and live air defenses .

If the Ukrainians have s300s and or other systems flying Large bombers over cities is a bad idea ,

Chances are they took a very high altitude bomb run , but sooner or later they will get intercepted

Plus they expected the people left in Ukraine after the military build up on the borders for weeks/months would be subservient to Russia and not fight back. Any that had other views of Russia, having left west for Europe before the invasion as fearing the army. Plus again Russia is an aging demography. They needed those Ukrainian young children to be the next generation of fighters for Russia and the generation after again. There's a racist element as well and Russia value those white Ukrainians to be white Russians and probably white Siberians. Crudely breeding stock for the military.

A real indication of the amount of Combat air patrols being conducted at the moment ( tonight) is the number of KC-135's in the air. There are currently 4 air-refuelling aircraft operating (3 over Poland, 1 over Romania). That's an incredible amount of Avgas.

Kinda nutty when ya think about not Putin or the military elites, but there's a whole bureaucracy in Russia that are carrying out things we find almost unthinkable but for them it's apparently something they can set themselves up for. Deporting people to shitholes they no links to, allowing the abduction of children and then the people who sign those forms to authorise it.

Latest clip from the Russian talk shows. Interesting to watch the changing narrative - they admit the Moskva was sunk by Ukraine, but intriguingly, are starting to concede for the first time that Russia is up against it now and even that it has a big battle on its hands. This guy appears to hint the Ukrainian army are better equipped than the Russians :

Still a risk, though. If it's the paper I am thinking of, I believe one of the authors admitted that gas is the big issue. The banana skin, if you will. They are not entirely sure how that would pan out. Coal and oil can be replaced easily enough by imports from other countries. Things are ok there. But replacing gas is a trickier proposition and it will take time. According to another one of the authors of that paper he believes the German economy can adapt to the shortages, much like the American economy during WW2. Those were, however, different times.

Maybe the German economy would rebound, maybe it wouldn't. But it would be a leap of faith. I don't see Scholz bringing that upon himself willingly.

What did they expect attacking and invading another sovereign state,

They are not fighting Nato , Ukrainians but not Nato ,

    Yet !

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,422 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

They didn't see it as a sovereign state. So they expected to seize it in a coup d'etat type assault. So I think all the expectations gone wrong flows from that initial view.

And the idea that NATO is their "equal" is laughable. All the indications are that the Russian armed forces are second rate, poorly led and not very disciplined. You'd wonder when the penny is going to drop that they are probably going to lose this war.

I think one of the main reasons Biden upped the ante with arms to Ukraine this week is that he sussed that the Russians were no great shakes (despite their size) and could be beaten.

Agree with this- it’s the irrational hysterical rush to ditch long used alternatives like nuclear, coal and even peat that have exasperated this issue- energy security = national security. Time there was a big fcukin wake up call with regards to this in particular.

  • I suspect alot of those children wont forget. And this is the information age so this will be replayed over and over again

That depends on whether or not you're a WW2 historian. Apparently his books are reasonably good, but he seems to have fallen victim to the requirement of the Almighty Youtube Algorithm to put stuff out regardless of how questionable it is. Books don't have an algorithm, he can take his time and do the reasearch. The problem is that if you're not a subject matter expert, you won't know it.

For example, if you're not a subject matter expert in WW2 tanks, you may not have caught his commentary which resulted in a rather angry post from the PanzerMuseum. https://daspanzermuseum.de/regarding-mark-feltons-king-tiger-still-in-lake-video/

Similarly, I may not be an aviation expert and may not have noted the flaws in Felton's Lancaster/A-Bomb video, but Greg's Airplanes is and did. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKB-oqdoduw

Basically, you're better off listening to the specialists. If you want naval stuff, go listen to Alex Clarke or Drachinifel. If you want tanks, listen to Panzermuseum, Tank Museum or Chieftain (me). If you want a researched strategic level overview, World War Two channel. General information, also from a qualified historian, Military History Visualised. For aircraft, Greg's Airplanes or Military Aviation history.

I'm on 'treat with caution' mode for him. He's good for prompting interest in subjects.

Nuclear is a weird one. Was popular back in the 50/60's's then interest was lost, then the oil crisis in the 70's renewed it, then 3 mile island happened it lost interest. Every time it was looked at as an alternative (mainly due to an oil crisis or more recently climate change and even more recent the Russian war) and when the cheap oil flows/US fracking or Chernobyl/Fukushima happen, there's no public appetite for it.

Zelensky said that Ukrainian officials think about 2,500 to 3,000 Ukrainian troops have died in the war, comparing the figure to what he said are Russia's casualty numbers of 19,000 to 20,000 (Russia has acknowledged 1,351 military casualties). Zelensky added there are about 10,000 Ukrainian troops who have been injured and that it's "hard to say how many will survive."

I have to say that figure is far far below what I would have guessed at this stage of the war; although it's still 2,500 to 3,000 too many. It's also not clear if that includes TDF and volunteer battalions and so on.

Since most of the figures released by Ukraine have seemed to have at least some basis in fact I don't see any reason this figure wouldn't be the same.

Only thing the Russkies have is their bully-boy Nuclear threats. Otherwise they are a pathetic shambles.

Probably underestimating troop cut off in isolated or Russian occupied areas like Mariupol.

And not gonna happen - he could have easily dropped a tactical nuclear warhead on Kyiv when things started to look bad for Russia, leading to a retreat, but then he would lose his only friend China, which would isolate the country from the rest of the world

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,804 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

Have the Russians even mentioned how many Ukrainian soldiers they have killed or civilians they have murdered?

It's highly strange they Russian don't release those figures even for propaganda

"In Russia stops production of new tanks due to financial problems and the lack of imported components

▫️At the Russian "Uralvagonzavod" are trying to overcome the crisis arising from the imposed sanctions. "Uralvogonzavod" (Nizhny Tagil) is a Russian manufacturer of armored vehicles, primarily the main tank of the Russian Federation "T-72".

▫️Despite the well-publicized "import substitution", The Russian Federation is not able to independently continue the production of high-tech weapons without continuing the supply of imported components.

▫️Therefore, the plant is forced to look for a solution to financial problems, including requiring a 100% subscription under government contracts. Production of new equipment, including T-90 and T-14 (Armata) tanks, is halting.

▫️The created "operational headquarters" the main direction of work was the repair of military equipment damaged in the war with Ukraine.". https://t.me/s/operativnoZSU

That's a shame, no more tanks for the horde.

Would I be right in guessing that there's numerous allied drones flying and bombing over ukraine without any identifiable parts if downed.
