Looks like Flanagan and Kyle Hayes are serious doubts for Sunday, with O'Donoghue, Gillane and Lynch also carrying knocks according to the Leader today.

Don't think any panel could afford to lose that much ability in one go, will be a disaster if that's the case tbh.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,793 ✭✭✭billyhead

We just don't have the strength in depth aswell.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,010 ✭✭✭slegs

Agreed but that said would be excited to see Cathal O'Neill and Adam English thrown into heat of battle to see how they get on. Pretty sure Cathal O'Neill is going to be a star so this could be his moment.

The defence has good cover with Mike Casey and Richie English now available. Also Colin Coughlan can cover at Half back. I agree about O'Neill getting game time but we have already lost Casey and with Flanagan romoured to have broken his hand he will be out for a while. I'm not a fan of David Reidy. His overall game isn't great. If Gillane and Lynch are also out on Sunday the pendulum will swing in favour of Cork if they have no injury concerns.

Gillane, Lynch and Hayes out would almost need a complete rethink of tactics. Were not losing them and beating Cork.

If any of Gillane,Lynch or Hayes or O Donoghue are missing then it's a Cork win for.me.

The full forward line is the real problem. I think we have good cover elsewhere. Looks certain that Flanagan is out from reports.

Looking at the players tried there during the league, David Reidy doesn't look at home as a corner forward. He's a decent sub for the half forward line. Pat Ryan hasn't progressed on from being an impact sub/cameo performer. He has all the necessary attributes, but hasn't shown the required consistency.

Darren O'Connell is excellent at club level but totally unproven at inter County. Adam English might need another year's development under his belt. He didn't have a huge impact in the U20 match last week or in the Clare match in the league, albeit scoring one lovely point that day.

Oisin O'Reilly might be an option if he can reproduce the form he showed for Kilmallock. He has a bit of spark about him. Mulcahy will likely be in line for a start also......or could they play Cian Lynch as a roving number 15?

O'Neill for me is an out and out half forward and I'd like to see him start.

Yeah, I think that's a fair call tbh. A win there is always a remote enough prospect in any event.

from what I'm hearing only Flanagan will be missing I hope it's true

Huge loss regardless. Already without Peter Casey from last year's A.I. final. Flanagan has had some fine outings V Cork. People talking about having players back for "later in the championship" need a reality check. Failure to take any points from the first 2 games could well mean the championship is over. And Limerick are not alone in this scenario, Clare, Tipp and even Waterford have players struggling to be fit. Waterford however have the strongest panel around at the moment and thus will be least effected. Cork seem to be the only team with an injury-free squad to pick from.

Agree. He will be a massive loss. Mulcahy might start but does he have the legs for 70 mins. He wouldn't match the physical presence of Flanagan aswell.

Cork supporter here. I wouldn't be putting too much emphasis on whatever player's ye have missing on Sunday. Some Cork supporters were very confident before the League Final because Austin Gleeson was out for Waterford. Didn't make any difference after.

I think it's just one of a lot of little things in your favour on Sunday. Im very nervous about the result.but still can't wait to get down and see that new stadium and for a full house too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,010 ✭✭✭lukin

It's a big game for sure but not that big when you think about it because three of the five teams in the Munster championship will qualify for the All-Ireland series. So both sides can afford to lose on Sunday and still qualify. I think Cork need to win a lot more than Limerick do because this is our only home game; we have to play Waterford in their home ground (we are obviously going to lose that game). We have to play Tipp in Thurles; never an easy assignment. We have Clare in Thurles; Clare love playing there just as much as we do. The league format of the Munster championship means more games so that is obviously something the fans welcome but the edge has been taken off some of the games as a result. Whoever finishes third faces playing the following week of the last game of group (I am fairly sure) so that is obviously not a good situation to be in but depending on who they get in the draw they could still get to the All-Ireland final.

It does seem a bit ridiculous to have all five teams playing each other with the end result of it being only two of them get knocked out.

If I had to call it now I would say Cork and Waterford to beat everyone and go through and Limerick to beat Tipp and Clare to come 3rd. Hard to call anything before the first round though so who knows

I'd agree with that.. Id see it as Cork and Waterford with Limerick getting third but to play Clare in Ennis ...thats a real tough one.

jaysus will ye manage to keep it pucked out to us on Sunday? almost as bad as Kerry now for talking down your chances. 3rd team in Munster my eye!

Team named for Sunday. Interesting that there are only four forward subs and three full back line subs. Wouldn't be surprised if Richie English starts instead of Reidy with Nash moving to 7 and Hayes to 11.

I would imagine it might by Lynch moving to corner forward with the freedom to roam and Hayes as you said moved to half forward with Dan Morrissey moved to half back and Richie or Mike Casey to full back.

Seriously short of forwards. Reidy never delivers when the chips are down. The fact he wont be taking frees also means he will not be involved in the game as much either.

  • Registered Users Posts: 817 ✭✭✭lim4ev

    c400

thats 7 how many subs do you need?

underwhelming team for most obviously the ff line in particular but would hope we'd have enough to get through this fixture. I do agree re you're suggestions of changes

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,041 ✭✭✭PeggyShippen

If that's the starting team then it's a crushing disappointment for me. When has Kiely ever named a dummy starting line up.Reidy has never delivered as a starter, not once but the manager loves him. He buzzes around lolking for loose ball which he then precedes to blast wide. He nearky lost us the Galway semi in 2020 with 4 wides on the trot. Mulcahy going on last years form wasn't good but I suppose starting him makes sense. He won't last 50mins.

It's all abit stale. Even looking forward to when this current management move on,they've not given enough debuts...or any. This whole team will age together and it ll be a decade in the wilderness afterwards. Cork will win this game with about 5 points to spare.

Kiely and Kinnerk don't owe us anything. I wouldn't be criticizing them. I would probably move Lynch to corner forward and let him roam out the field with O'Neill starting in the half forwards. I agree Reidy isn't great. We don't need him for set peices aswell.

  • Registered Users Posts: 512 ✭✭✭C4000

It's pure speculation but they would nearly always name at least 5 forward subs. In the all ireland final last year there were 6 forwards on the bench....so it's a bit unusual to only have 4 here with 5 backs, 3 of which are out and out full back line players.

They might very well play as selected, but there are options there to switch it up. Reidy didn't look great at corner forward when he was tried there in the league but hopefully he can produce something.

The only occassion in recent times that they've made changes to the named team was when Hayes was switched to wing back and Lynch to centre forward etc against Tipp in 2020.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,041 ✭✭✭PeggyShippen

I'd start Adam English and O Neill. Its sink or swim.I'd keep Morrissey in reserve ,he's been out of form but a great man. I'd have moved Kyle up aswell, moved Dan Out and Played Mike Casey

I'd think kiely and kinnerk will have a better idea of who to play and where considering they're there every night.

o Neill certainly could have started English only finding his feet at this level did you see the u20s v clare?

I'd never criticise players or management reidy wouldn't have started if we'd a full hand no doubt he might take his chance tomorrow

limerick to win with a bit to spare for me
