Rotary phone issues

We have bought a northern telecom rotary phone, saying on the bottom 82, which I presume is 1982. When connecting it to our phone line, we get a dialling tone, initially, which changes to an engaged tone when continuing to dial a number. The rotary phone does not ring, when receiving a call, however when I made a call indoors, from my mobile although there was no sound evidence, we were able to hear each other, using each phone, in different rooms. Husband has limited knowledge of phone workings , can anyone shed some light on how to rectify these issues, if at all possible , we both grew up with rotary phones so would like to be able to experience the nostalgia. Many thanks in advance.

Hi. This is not the forum to get such answers. Try asking in our Nets & Comms forum below and hopefully someone like @Spear can help.

Start a thread on the Net & Comms forum, and it'll be discussed there.

2 questions: how is the cord connected inside the phone, are spade connectors used or are wires soldered(prewired) onto a circuit board? Have you got other line jacks in the house with other phones connected or just the one phone in the main jack? The connectors might need to be re-arranged or the prewired cord you got with the phone could be faulty or the jack itself could be faulty.Usually 3 connectors are needed on the cord for the phone to ring. You'll prob see 4 wires in the cable(sometimes 6!)-looking at the connectors ends.Red or green can be for incoming speech path(the person calling you).Green or red can be be outgoing speech path(you calingl them). These can be swopped around.the bell wire will be yellow or black. If the cord you got with the phone is prewired i.e.just plugs into the base of phone you could try another cord.If you have other jacks in the house try disconnecting them-keep the main jack(near your front door)connected and see if phone rings. Then reconnect each jack to see which one is stopping the ring. The same colours need to follow thru on each jack for ring to work. That's a short run thru!!

And it's the same for you, take it over Net&Comms where Florence has a thread open now.

Thankyou for your detailed response. Unfortunately, phones are not his thing, give him an old car and he will sort out what's wrong, having been a mechanic and ncd tester with own garage, in UK, for almost 50 years. Would you or anyone know of a reputable repair person who specialises in these rotary phones, in Waterford County, please. Think at 76 it is a bit beyond his area of expertise!.
