All of that is for the benefit of the IRFU, that’s before they become paid professional rugby players, so call those initiatives the IRFU player pathway and it solves the identity issue.

The important step is where players join an academy and that can be evenly distributed. It will never happen of course, the IRFU wants each province to stand alone based on their own resources, and that’s fine until Leinster fans start pontificating to other provinces about how they should be developing their own players in comparison to Leinster, by any metric that is a nonsensical argument.

Rugby is a niche sport in connacht. Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon combined only have 2 clubs. Additional connacht schools rugby does not have the same tradition or numbers as leinster. Connacht rugby will always behind the other provinces due to playing numbers not population. Maybe a draft system would work, but it would have to be done at leaving cert stage due to most top players in leinster only playing schools rugby. Sorry for being so negative in my last few posts but I was so dishearten by the performance last night.

We were beaten by a team that would beat all but a couple of international sides so there was no shame in this defeat. Having said that, we tend to be bullied up front by the better teams- Leinster’s scrum and lineout maul was truly dominant and they were very effective at slowing down our ruck ball in contrast to the really quick ruck ball that they generated. We really can’t expect our backline to create significant openings if our pack is being dominated. I think that we need to booster our front-row and back-row resources if we want to compete at Champions Cup level. However, we should be quite competitive in the Challenge Cup next season.

An academy draft system requires 18 year old kids to be sent to somewhere they don't want to go. It's never going to work.

But even the basic premise that all the provinces "should" be equal is flawed. When was that ever a policy?

Exactly, results have to be viewed according to resources.

    Budget and playing population.

Connacht doing a lot to expand the game though. Sligo has 2 clubs if you take into account South Sligo which fields minis only for now. hopefully Youths soon. Where you getting just 2 clubs alone in Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon...

Connacht schools dont and wont ever have same numbers as Leinster. Well connacht will always be behind the others due to population which affects playing numbers. A full draft system wont ever happen.

Imagine there were posters calling for the likes of TOH and Farrell to be internationals not so long ago. Connacht have a problem with playing population and with the coaching. Friend is useless, imo.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,341 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

There hasn't been calls for TOH to get international caps in years. He was a fine player in his day but his best days look behind him now. He is 31 I suppose. Farrell was arguably the form centre for the 12 months prior to his last serious injury. And has picked up a few other niggling injuries since. Hasn't got back to same levels since.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,099 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Friend isnt useless but its time for change. 4 seasons in charge and time to move on

You say Connacht have problem with playing population but you do know theyre always going to be big losers compared to other provinces when looking at playing population and are doing exceptional work with resource they have.

Central contracts bring leinster to double the salary of the English teams and easily treble next year. How can people expect Connacht to compete with that?

Ya Back in 2016 when the won the pro12. Youre living in the past mate

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,952 ✭✭✭TRC10

    Nobody is expecting them to.

Sport isn't and has never been a perfect level playing field. The playing numbers and cultural prominence of rugby in Dublin will always be bigger than in Connacht

  • Registered Users Posts: 882 ✭✭✭Lsdrugbyfan

no it doesnt, stop reading welsh rugby twitter

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,554 ✭✭✭RichieRich_89

Connacht should be disbanded and all their best players should be moved to Munster. They're all Munster fans over there anyway except for a few die-hard Buccaneers. That's why they sing The Fields.

Not quite. Munster should be split in two: Munster West (including Connacht and based in Limerick with some home games in Galway) and Munster East, based in Cork. After all, if the Galway/Connacht hurlers can play in the Leinster Championship, then why can't Connacht play in Munster West?

That way all the nonsense about improving the N20 between Cork and Limerick would stop for good!

Who produced the players? Where are the players from? Where do they want to play?

The model works for Ireland. What you want is charity.

  • Registered Users Posts: 101 ✭✭tvpc

English clubs are reducing the salary cap next year so Leinster who have a salary of between 11-12 million excluding central contracts will easily have a salary 3 times the top spending English team.

  • Registered Users Posts: 220 ✭✭AccidentallyOnside

Odd that what proports to be the Connacht rugby thread is largely populated by fans of other provinces rubbing our noses in a defeat.

    Stay classy guys 👌

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,361 ✭✭✭✭salmocab

Nobody was rubbing noses in anything that’s just paranoia.

south sligo rfc lasted for about 3 years and is gone almost 10 years ago. 1 club sligo, 1 club leitrim, 0 clubs roscommon, creggs is a few 100 meters inside the galway border. It does of course pull from both counties but its in galway.

Creggs is very much a roscommon. Saying zero clubs in roscommon is nonsense. try tell that to the Creggs members.

  • Registered Users Posts: 265 ✭✭Strand1970

OK, I am regularly in creggs a few times a year and I have always been told the club is physically in Galway but its postal address is roscommon

  • Registered Users Posts: 101 ✭✭tvpc

Creggs is in Galway. I think they wear Galway colours too

  • Registered Users Posts: 453 ✭✭Former Coach

We also ran the Premiership leaders close in both the home and away matches so not far away from being a very competitive side with a few strategic additions.

  • Registered Users Posts: 595 ✭✭✭jimdemp

There is a reason the IRFU wont release the figures. At least the GAA showed the public the financial doping of Dublin GAA but the IRFU will never show the financial doping of Leinster.

  • Registered Users Posts: 595 ✭✭✭jimdemp

Think some people are expecting too much. Connacht are building a squad and have come a long way. Europe has been great experience, 2 good games against England's best, 2 against the urc best and 2 good games against a physical French team but missing props in one game. Competitive in all bar 1 with Leicester probably being closest to Connacht in Salary spend.

GAA is king in Connacht 60% of the football teams are in div 1 leinster have 0% of teams in div 1. The fact a GAA stronghold is outperforming the welsh regions is amazing

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,224 ✭✭✭ClanofLams

Posters unhappy with Friend don’t expect to beat Leinster or run them close even.

They expect a level of consistency, not to be hammered by Dragons at home, not to concede 50 plus to Edinburgh second team twice in three seasons, not to repeatedly lose games when two scores or more up in the last quarter etc etc

Thats a level that can be delivered with the current squad. Friend has had four years and this season has been a shambles.

  • Registered Users Posts: 595 ✭✭✭jimdemp

The Dragons result was bad but no team wins all the games they are expected to. I think Friends comments after the leinster game was challenging the mental side of the squad. For many its easier to push your body then push yourself mentally. To stay alert and concentrate and keep control of a game is much harder then playing off the cuff rugby. When kieran keane challenged the standards he was thrown out for been unrealistic, Friend has to be more diplomatic and slowly change things so people in the squad believe the standards achievable and want to work to achieve them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,773 ✭✭✭connemara man

Connacht lost a mental skills coach over the summer and never replaced

And TBH it can be seen

Roscommon technically has no club but most of Roscommon plays in Creggs. Creggs is over 80% Roscommon players and coaches. Buccaneers while located in Co. Westmeath is also a Roscommon club and part of Connacht.

There are areas where players go to Longford but it's not that many.
