Any tool around for making hollow points out of round nosed bullets.

If your talking about 22lr then push a philips screw driver into the lead nose.

I should have said round nosed .22 LR. Read somewhere that hollow points are more aerodynamic than solid bullets.

The thought of pushing a phillips screwdriver on to the tip of a .22 LR to make it more aerodynamic does not appeal to me.

Watch Death Wish series of films starring Charles Bronson, to get ideas about hollow-points

A drill press and a very thin drill bit would be in order. But don't expect match accuracy out of them,as you are removing material to the weight of the powder charge. Doubt anyone makes a tool to do this, as most folks would just go and buy HP .22 rounds in the 1st place.

The bullet I am using is not made in hollow point. So I need to improvise.

Maybe for a reason. Usually production is based on optimum size/weight/shape for a given charge.

Yes I appreciate that. So I am going to improvise and make hollow points to see how I fare.

If it's for dispatching mink in a trap where accuracy over distance isn't an issue you might try making dumdums by carefully cutting a cross in the nose of the bullet. You can also buy fragmented hollow points which have the same effect.

Would you want something like a jewellers hacksaw for it to cut a thin enough track ?

An ordinary hacksaw would not leave you too much meat left to mushroom

Lead solids, you could just use a knife!

I am using CCI Quiet ammo. They only come in solid round nose. They are extremely quiet. Quieter than an air rifle maybe. Good accuracy out to 40 yds. I am hoping to make hollow points to improve their killing power.

Try filing the round nose semi-flat,like the old Remmy Yellow Jacket round. As it isn't for accuracy that should be enough to mushroom in the mink body.Or have a look about for Flobert BB round. It's just a single BB round ball sitting on a rimfire primer. With some guns its a PITH to load as a single shot, but they are quiet to the point of air-rifle.Originally developed for so-called "salon shooting" [indoor living room]in the 19th century. They might suit your work too?

I am using them for smallish rodent sized vermin at night. So accuracy is important. I use the .22 shot for dispatching mink. Using anything other than very small shot could be lethal to the dispatcher.

There is also other hand/hammer operated units but hitting any live bullet in an enclosed steel sleeve is not up my street..

Good suggestions out there. Yes, hitting any part of a rimfire bullet wouldn't be the best. Especially in an enclosed sleeve. So ideally what I need to do is drill a hole in the bullet so as to aid the deformation of the bullet and retain accuracy.

I would imagine the bullet is going so slow in to a small rodent it will pass through without expansion even if you make a hollow point.I used to shoot fox in the head with 22lr with hollow points and they would pass through.

I would of thought hitting a rodent with 40gr round nose would kill them no matter where they were hit.I also used to dispatch mink with 22 shorts to the head or just behind their front leg,now I've no 22lr I just put cage 30yrds away and shoot it with no7 cartridge and cages are never damaged. Also I think this topic came up before and was said that changing or altering ammunition was illegal though I could be incorrect

A 40 grain bullet will kill them but some will do a runner. So I am hoping to reduce the number of runners.

The tool in the attached has a fitting for making hollow points. There's a jig setup on youtube as well:

RWS subs are very quiet, IMHO. Norma subs are also another contender.

I think the PTB when after a man for seating his own bullets or pulling heads for one and reseating on a modified charge but as he didn’t have powder or primers as a separate component he walked..

Correctamundo! It was a case ASFIK up in Donegal or them parts, the mid to late 80s.DC case if I remember. The judge decided that he was modifying the ammo with a heavier or more effective bullet, not reloading it from fresh materials in a spent case on a 22/250.

CCI Quiets come in a hollow point too. Specifically a segmented HP that splits in impact. I’d say it’s exactly what your looking for.

I’m not sure who would have them. Might be worth ringing a few of the larger dealers. A poster mentioned he got them before, but a few years ago now.

If you cannot find CCI Quiet's, try these.

Not HP's but should do the trick.
