Anyone know if Thailand are due to relax their pre and post testing anytime soon.

Want to book and can live with an antigen before boarding but the thought of testing positive in a foreign country and having to isolate for the holiday puts me off.

What’s putting me off is the prices of everything. Is everyone else seeing this? Airbnb’s and hotels all over are substantially more expensive than before Covid….it will be literally impossible to travel as much as I did before the pandemic. I just cannot believe that the prices we are seeing now all over Europe and the states (don’t know about SE Asia) are sustainable in any way whatsoever

This is day 10 of my LA trip. The prices are steep in the states this time for sure. Cheese cake factory restaurants are about 75% higher than Dublin prices on comparable eateries. Same with TGI Fridays. Petrol is running at half our prices however it’s still the most expensive I’ve ever paid in the states for car fuel.

Thankfully I’ve an Airbnb 3 bed villa hired from the same Scandinavian host I’ve used for the last 20 years and he was very fair. $1500 for 10 nights. Woodland Hills area so it’s very competitive price.

Can balance things out by purchasing designer clothes as they’re running a major savings here.

The travel industry is trying to push for further relaxation. I feel the same as you do on testing positive somewhere particularly with this variant.

I’m very much looking forward to Thailand getting back to normal as I’ve family based there.

It’s getting easier to gain entry now with only antigen required preflight however you’ve still to stay at a sha ++ hotel for 1st night to await your PCR test taken post arrival to chosen Thailand airport.

Additionally you’ve a very large amount of forms to fill out pre departure along with insurance requirements.

I’ve heard of tourists being potentially infected while on public transport (someone on board has tested positive) and they get pinged on their mandatory Thai travel app to go straight to hospital and hit with crazy overnight bills (regardless of test results …. Just assumed to be infected)

Its all a business over in Thailand since this started. Example,,,,, you face a €100 fine if your medical mask is not fitted properly walking on the outside streets.

I find this guy the best source of Thailand info. He’s an Irish guy from co Meath who is living near Phuket. Always updates on covid rules daily.

That is really helpful. Thailand is firmly off the travel list until it goes back to normality. That sounds like a stress machine and the antithesis of having a relaxing holiday in the sun.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 6,744 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sheep Shagger

    Yep very helpful info.

Definitely not booking until things are relaxed. As someone else said there isn't a lot of value in Europe or US this year as I think demand is so high as people are dying for holidays.

Makes you cry when you compare to the likes of Thailand.....of only for the bloody testing restrictions. If they ended today I'd be booking something there tonight.

Going on my stag tomorrow after two years of waiting, i'v been absolutely **** it all week that I'd catch covid this week and have to miss it,

24 hours out and felling great fingers crossed its the same in the morning,

Unfortunately 2 lads already victims of the red line since Monday ,

I had it in February and am hoping that me done but even if i do catch it while away enjoying myself i don't care , its time for life to move on ,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,464 ✭✭✭dalyboy

Only hope of Thailand returning to normal is their competitors reopening and “living” with covid , eg Vietnam , Philippines , Cambodia, Bali etc ….. unfortunately they all seem to be hindered with an unreal / over the top reaction to covid. . It would be a very clinical holiday experience to go to any of them atm.

That is wise advice. But will need to think of where in Europe for this year and book something.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 6,744 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sheep Shagger

Yep, wouldn't normally do packages in Europe but buying flights and accommodation separately is looking pricey. Plenty of great deals in April and May presumably to drive demand but come June onwards its a sky rocket.

Looking at Cassidy Travel who have a semi decent search engine. Ussd them before for further afar.

I've friends out in Thailand at the moment, their first stop before travelling around the rest of Asia.

They're loving it, its been pretty normal bar mask wearing in some places for them. Good weather and plenty of tourists around they say.

They were a little worried about what it was going to be like before going given the reports of restrictions etc but they're saying on the ground its not as bad as its being made out to be.

I'll probably head out to them in July for a while.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 14,233 Mod ✭✭✭✭pc7

I find Tui good for packages, especially if you search by dates of their own flights. As it gets nearer they need to fill the plane regardless. Used them last Summer.

Got lucky this year and booked flights in January now 3 times the price for same flights. moving around during the two weeks so was able to pick up some decent accommodation at a good rate too.

Live in Singapore, going to the Rosewood Phuket for Easter had become a bit of a family tradition. So delighted to be going back this year. Not phased by any of the travel requirements, even with travelling with 3 munchkins under age 5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,464 ✭✭✭dalyboy

Hi Stephen. I’ve a brother in Thailand atm too. His reports ally with your friends experience. My bro tells me that there is an air of unknown in the air at all times. As if restrictions could be reimposed at any moment and bars etc told to shut in a moments notice. He’s been there a couple of months. He does reckon July / August the entire country looks likely to be back to almost normal in his opinion.

Could be a safe bet location at that stage and certainly a very affordable and fun holiday in comparison to US or European rip off countries

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,344 ✭✭✭✭stephenjmcd

Oh absolutely, can't believe what they've spent so far in 2 weeks, so cheap

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 6,744 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sheep Shagger

As a matter of interest are you not worried about testing positive over there once you land? I can live with the testing in Ireland pre flight but uts over there and testing positive that puts me off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38 Shiok

I could be very unlucky but we haven’t caught it yet so have to hope for the best!

The flight is less than 2 hrs. My door to door travel time is less than 5 hrs.

From my perspective, I don’t feel any pressure that it would end up being a wasted trip. The country is so easy and cheap for me to get to from here that I have been lucky to travel there several times a year for the past 10yrs that I have lived in Asia. Would have been normal to hop on a flight Friday afternoon pre-kids for a long weekend, did our fair share of island hopping, my hen weekend was in Bangkok etc etc

I will pass through Patong Beach on way to hotel, reminisce with hubby that that used to be us, content now to be having a very low key break were the highlight will be seeing an Easter egg hunt & a lot of the spa.

The alternative is we stay at home (haven’t we all done too much of that) as don’t want to travel too far & all our other short-haul neighbours have similar if not stricter restrictions, so have to take a little bit of risk..

Fingers crossed I haven’t completely jinxed myself with my overzealous previous post, just spotted I said phased instead of fazed!

Good call on Tui, never travelled with them before but we booked the family holiday yesterday.

Obviously not as good value as the likes of Thailand but that will have to wait given their testing requirements.

€3.4k for two adults, two kids covering direct charter flight, 14 nights hotel with a kids club and free access to a massive water park, checked bags and transfers in Tenerife during school holidays.

Can't wait now its booked :)

Aw delighted SS, I found them great nice to have something to look forward too. Siam is amazing! One of the best water parks I’ve ever been too.

Seems Thailand have just scrapped the pre flight PCR but you still need to take a test and quarantine for one day on arrival.

I was in Belgrade in March. Went there with Lufthansa, Dublin-Frankfurt-Belgrade. I uploaded my vaccination certificate to the Lufthansa website before flying and they issued my boarding pass. Immigration at Nikola Tesla didn't look for it all.

Our flight back from Belgrade landed at 9.01 am in Frankfurt. Our flight to Dublin was boarding at 9.05 am. A representative from Lufthansa met us coming off the plane and put us on a bus to another gate. The rep then put us to the top of the queue for security screening and walked us to the gate. It was an efficient rush job by Lufthansa. Ireland had dropped all Covid related entry requirements a day or two before the flight so no messing around with documentation.

That's great up to date news Nigel, Thanks,

When I was booking my flights last year, I used travelgenio, as I had used them in the past, and found them OK. Never again though,,,, but I seem to remember seeing an ad from Lufthansa where they guaranteed making the connections, when all flights booked with them directly. Is this arrangement you had booked with them? So even if I was flying Lufthansa, I had booked via Travelgenio, so all connections are at your own risk. But great to hear that all you had to do covid-wise, was up-load your covid certs direct to Lufthansa, and no one even looked for any covid documentation in Belgrade airport...great news!!! That was sure a headache last September. Did you enjoy your visit? Much snow?

  • Moderators, Regional Abroad Moderators Posts: 2,322 Mod ✭✭✭✭Nigel Fairservice

I found the flights on Skyscanner but I booked them directly with Lufthansa. When you book directly with the airline I think they will sort you out if you miss a connecting flight due to your other flight being late. In fairness they really made it their business to see to it that we got our connecting flight to Dublin on the way home.

The only Covid thing we had to do was upload our vaccination certs to Lufthansa when checking in for the flight. I was half worried because the Serbian authorities required a negative Covid test to enter the country up to recently. I kept thinking I hadn't read the requirements properly and I'd be turned away for not having a Covid test!

We had a lovely time in Belgrade. It was great to see a city with so many bookshops. There was one snowy day when we were there. We ducked into the lobby of the Moscow hotel for the afternoon and had coffees watching the snow come down. It was a great place to pass a few hours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,783 ✭✭✭jmreire

I genned up on the covid requirement before I booked the tickets, and the Govt website and they said that one or two hours over the 48 hr requirement would not matter to tourists or others whose flights had been delayed. But when I arrived in the passport / covid check desk, I asked about this exception but was told in no uncertain terms " Not even 2 mins over" !!!, And yet, you just handed in your passport, and straight out the door. Hotel Moscow ( in Moscow, they have Hotel Belgrade) straight across the road from McDonalds,, LOL. So you visited Skadarlija and Kalemegdan Fortress? Did you have time to visit the Nikola Tesla museum? Enough to keep you going there for a few days !!! Lovely old city.

Does anyone have an inside line on when it will be possible to buy fastpass again? It's 'temporarily' sold out.

How long is the security queue lately for the hoi polloi in cabin class ?

Flew to Edinburgh at the weekend from Dub. nothing required either end.

Dublin airport no masks required, they were required on the plane, at Edinburgh airport I took my mask off.

I was stopped by the police and told to put it on, despite about 30% non compliance. I duly did.

I found from a mask point of view Edinburgh has not really moved on, most people wearing masks in shops pubs etc.

There are signs everywhere saying masks are mandatory. Though there is about only 70% compliance and no one seemed to mind if you were not wearing one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,520 ✭✭✭VG31

Well they are still mandatory in Scotland so that might explain why most people are still wearing them.

"No one seemed to mind if you were not wearing one"...

    ...except the police 🤣🤣

In fairness, their house their rules. If Edinburgh want to continue with a mask mandate, just like many EU countries, then visitors should respect it. At this point in the pandemic in well vaccinated countries, I dont seem much value in the mask mandate but I loathe people who dont follow the rules even more. (this isn't directed at you OP)

Does Australia require a test as well as vaccination to fly into ?

I was reading on their travel info page that you need to be vaccinated + test.

I thought it was just vaccinated.

Spain are dropping the requirement to wear masks indoors from April 19th. Public transport is an exception however.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 206 ✭✭Amenhotep

You live in Spain right ?

Did you "loath" the people not wearing masks outdoors when it was legally required ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,464 ✭✭✭dalyboy

That just leaves onboard aeroplanes as the only place where masks have an existing mandate. Hopefully that too is removed soon (if not then it brings into question the effectiveness of hepa-filters which are in 95% of all commercial airlines). Personally speaking the wearing of masks on a recent long-haul flight was a very uncomfortable experience and I felt sorry for the airline staff needing to enforce such redundant covid rules.

Think Spain removing need to fill in the health form form the 19th April for vaccinated folk, will try find link.

Yep that's correct. For EU folks anyway, The rules for Brits and non EU visitors aren't entirely clear on it yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 206 ✭✭Amenhotep

No not a stupid question, you stated you "loathe people who didn't follow the mask rules" on a previous post, and am genuinely curious how as a resident of Spain you felt about that particular ridiculous rule

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 16,663 CMod ✭✭✭✭faceman

You are in your hoop curious.

"genuinely curious how as a resident of Spain you felt about that particular ridiculous rule"

Instead, you are looking to argue or demean anyone who doesn't agree with your perspective on a matter.

Move along and focus on something more worthwhile rather than stirring crap in a thread about travel.

having just done a recent flight to the states I had no problems wearing the mask long haul and felt safer with it on. And no one else on the flight had a problem either

Is it from then as it doesn't seem to be a requirement this evening. I was looking as we are going next week but its not the same information as yesterday. So now I'm not sure. We have recovery certs for all travelling and covid certs for all adults.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 mike222

The requirement for the P. L. F. has already been removed.

You no longer need to fill in a SpTH form if you have a valid EU DCC...from what I can gather anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,280 ✭✭✭Sammy2012

Would you what is the story if kids are under 12? I assume they are exempt from everything.

It’s no longer required if you have the DCC.

Yeah, is there anywhere in the EU/UK with restrictions on entering still? How many countries still need a DCC now?
