Would you be happy to have it served up on a plate and told its a meal ?

they serve meals, they are one if the more expensive places. It’s was meant to be €18.

id expect something of their menu

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,589 ✭✭✭✭ted1

My expectations are what is as per description, it was labelled as a meal, it was not a meal.

they serve meals, they gave me something that isn’t a meal.

My mistake, apologies. I hadn’t seen that distinction on my orders. I’m wondering if it was a typo on their part? Did you complain to them?

The purpose is not purely to reduce food waste - if that was the idea, then the food wood be handed out for free.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,182 ✭✭✭Roberto_gas

Have stopped using this long time back…this concept was to reduce waste rather than offload use by date food and shops are using this to make bucks ! There would be few good deals but misses most of the time

just on bread loaves that arent fresh, you can revive the freshness by replacing the lost moisture in the bread. Pour or spray a small bit water all over the crust and then wrap in foil and put it in the oven at around 160c for 10-15 minutes. It will come out like it is freshly baked and the effect lasts for a few hours, enough time to eat it. It can also be microwaved in slices but the oven method delivers a better result.

@ted1 I still don't think you should be "raging". It's always going to be a gamble. I certainly wouldn't be planning my evening around what I might get in a surprise bag

More establishments in Cork seem to be joining the app - which is good. However, I'm not sure that most are sticking true to the concept? Most places seem to be releasing offers 24 hours in advance (i.e. reserve today, collect tomorrow).

Perhaps I'm wrong, but if the goal was to reduce food waste, I would have expected a shorter lead-in (collection at 1 or 2 hours notice). It seems to me that instead it's veering more towards the goodie bag/blind bag model.

I've been watching the Cork rollout and its ridiculous. 50+ places, never ANY availability or things sold out within 10 minutes. All thats available is Applegreens.

Places do offers 24hrs in advance but as I found in London you can order a bag and then if they don't have anything available they cancel.

Got a big bag of bread and rolls from Tartine Bakery out in Baldoyle the other week. Sliced and froze it on the day, we are still eating it today. Sourdough particularly yummy.

On a side note, was in Spain week before last and hit the app icon by mistake - lo and behold a load of Spanish places came up, so TooGoodToGo is in operation there too.

Id forgotten the app is in use across several countries in Europe. Cant wait for the food porn from Boardsies on their summer holidays tracking down 3.99 bargains in France and Spain 😂

The app seems to be well established in the UK where there are several supermarkets listed on the app including Morrisons. I hope it's something that catches on here too although most of the supermarkets seem to be able to manage waste well with their own discounting as items approach their Best Before dates.

Got these three sugared muffins and a slice of fruit cake from the Tram cafe in St . Patrick's.Park, D8 for 3.99.

Word of warning- there are two Tram cafes in Dublin, the other one is over in Jervis which is where I went first on a fools errand. I never knew there is two of them and just assumed it was the one at Jervis without looking at the address on the app

For those looking for more reviews, there's a thread on Reddit which has a good few reviews of places in Dublin -

That's a fair question. Yo Sushi sell their bags 24 hours ahead. If you know you're going to have excess product 24 hours ahead, surely you should be taking less out of the freezer or ordering less or whatever.

Yeah, it's frustrating in Cork. I've been refreshing constantly today out of curiosity and all there is is 3 Applegreens, including one with a rating of 2.1. Everything decent seems to sell out literally in seconds, which suggests there's only 1 or 2 bags put up.

That said, I've gotten two bags so far.

One from The Gourmet Grocer, a new deli-style place in Riverstick. €4.99 got me two fairly stale almond croissants, 1 medium slice of a Victoria Sponge (I think, tasted a bit different so could have been gluten free maybe?) and a small pot of curried parsnip soup (serves 1, in reality). The cake was nice, the croissants would have been nice if they'd been fresher and the soup was watery and bland. Good value in the context of the app, but not overly to my tastes so I'd be slow to order again.

I got another from Fly Coffee on Lapps Quay for €3.99. I had never been there before, but the picture was of pastries and it's a coffee shop so I expected sandwiches or pastries. Instead, I got a HUGE box of Middle Eastern mezze/cold salads. The staff were unbelievably nice, the amount of food was huge (I tried having it for lunch and got halfway through, at best) and it was all very tasty. It wasn't what I was expecting though, and I'm not a massive fan of that type of cold food so it was an instance where I wished there had been slightly more transparency about what I was ordering.

Okay, no sooner did I post that last comment did I win the TGTG motherload!

The Grumpy Baker in Cork city. I’d never heard of it, but it has a 5.0 rating. Managed to grab a bag for €3.99 and holy moly!

I got a full huge loaf of sour dough, a big chunk of focaccia, two savoury pastries (a slightly curried pumpkin filling, I think), a chocolate and pistachio danish, a cinnamon roll, an almond croissant, an apple turnover and a raspberry (I think) cronut.

It’s an insane amount of food for an insanely good price, and bloody delicious to boot from what I’ve tried!

Fair play, thats really good. Still no good for me! In Dublin and London there are plenty of past 7pm pickups, suitable for work, but theres nothing at all that late in Cork apart from that one Applegreen with a 2.1 rating.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 30,657 Mod ✭✭✭✭Faith

I've seen a couple of places in the Marina Market (Hansum and Soul Food, I think), and Dashi Sushi has very late pickups (like 9.30).

Traditional Asian Cake Dublin (€4.99): Have gotten two bags here so far and they’ve both been fantastic. Two large cakes (€11 each normally) in each bag. Also received a few small cupcakes/tarts. Overall value is probably around €28 - €30 per bag.

Veganic Dublin (€3.99): Have also gotten some bags from here. They give you a very handy reusable jute bag with a little detachable pouch inside to carry the items. In addition to the food, in one bag I received a glass box with a bamboo lid which can be microwaved, frozen, put in the oven etc. It had a small discolouration on part of the lid, but it’s purely cosmetic - the box is still fully useable and functional. The food selection was okay; in one bag I received two chocolate bars, two packets of frozen spaghetti/meal, a big vegan roast/meat substitute, another type of meat substitute and a box of smoothie blends. When looking at the prices on their website their stuff is generally quite expensive with the chocolate bars being almost €5 a go and the roast coming in at €16.50. The bag was worth between €25-€30 based on the prices on their website.

Haha Ffs Ted if you love your wife make her a dinner or maybe buy her a nice take away. Don't rely on a 6 quid lucky dip on her having a nice meal after a 12 hour shift.

I've done a few of these over the past few weeks:

Butlers Pantry - 1st one was brilliant, 2nd not so good

Tiger Pizza in Rathmines - 1st time I got a large pizza that was really nice, 2nd time I called in they said both TGTG had already been collected so I had to apply for a refund

Gallagher's Boxty - Both Times got Irish Stew with Mash Potato and Two slices of Brown Bread, both times lovely.

Square Ball - We got loaded Fries, they were nice, couldn't finish them.

Pizza Truck HQ - Got a large pizza and seasoned chips, it was lovely

Fresh Grand Canal - Got a sandwich, a cake, a big curry for two and some other bits

Hole in the Wall - Got a sandwich and soup and a pastry. Bit disappointing as it's from Dash beside them so I'd rather they just advertised them all as dash.

Appatizers Bistro Cafe - got a vegetable curry with chips, rice and a Brownie, they waited back for me as I was running late.

Appatizers and Gallagher's have been the best so far IMO
