Nothing for me today. The €50K went to Cork, bought in 2020. And as usual there are plenty of examples of people beating the odds.

I don't know why I bother checking every Friday. I haven't had a win since winning €50 last June. And that was my only win last year. 46k (house deposit).

April count. Not included are a €500 and a €1,000 prize which these bonds won.

     Friday 01

29 million bonds AYT to AZV inclusive won 180 prizes, average per million 6.207. Highest AZS 14, lowest AZA, AZB, AZN, AZR 3 each.

     Friday 08

     30 m, AYU to AZX, 186, 6.200. AZG 10, AYX, AZN 2 each.

     Thursday 14

     29 m AYX to AZZ, 161, 5.551. AZR 11, AZA Zero.

     Friday 22

     29 m AYZ to BAB, 195, 6.724. AZT, AZZ 10 each, AZO 3.

    Friday 29

    29 m AZB to BAD, 192, 6.621, AZQ 10, AZR Zero.

146 million bonds won 914 prizes, average per million 6.260. x 52 x €50 equals €16,276.71. Divided by 62.5 to get what €100K would win in a year with the same luck equals €260.43. Nearest to 5 x €50.

    Nothing for me today.

Remind me not to add to my pbs on a Monday! 😂

Just when I was about to give up I got a €50 yesterday. Not a good 2022 for me so far.

Does anyone suspect that once your money is in a while your chances of winning goes down. I won a few times early on but have won nothing in a good while now.

Im half tempted to pull my money out and repurchase the bonds.

Each of those monthly counts which I do are all new bonds under three months old. They never get better results than average luck would give.

Nothing for me today. The number of €50 prizes in the May draws is 4,518 up from 4,488 in April. The newest bond to win on 01 April was AZW288139, newest 06 May BAF761767, sales of around €60 million.

The €50K went to Kildare, 2021 bond. 9 of the 10 €1K prizes went to Leinster, the other one to the UK.

Updating this post from 06 November 2021. Draws from 12 November 2021 to 06 May 2022 inclusive.

    03 December 2021 €50 ZH802312.

    23 December €50 ZH820205.

    07 January 2022 €50 ZH810597.

    28 January €50 ZH778415.

    11 February €50 ZH800513.

    04 March €50 ZH804012.

    16 March €50 ZH775637.

    01 April €50 ZH796680.

    08 April €50 ZH814620 and €1,000 ZH775160.

    06 May €50 ZH759379.

The bonds from ZH759379 to ZH820205 are worth €380,168.75. We don’t know if they have other bonds lower or higher in the series, or whether any of the bonds have been cashed in.

    Splitting those into 3 x €100K and 1 x €80,150

    ZH759379 to ZH775378 7 prizes. ZH775379 to ZH791378 7 prizes. ZH791379 to ZH807378 9 prizes. ZH807379 to ZH820205 4 prizes.

The 3 x €100K outperformed average luck with 23 prizes against an expected 15. The €80K got 4 which would be the expected return. Overall 27 prizes against an expected 19. The first 26 draws had 16 wins against an expected 9/10, the second 26 draws 11 against an expected 9/10. (€380,168.75 x 0.25% = €950.42, 19 x €50 prizes in a year).

Given that two of the prizes amounted to €51K there would be another calculation to be done for the percentage return achieved, but I just concentrated on the number of prizes.

A look back at the €50K and €250K prizes in the last 27 draws, 19 November 2021 to 20 May 2022.

The two €250K prizes both went to Dublin AEK bond 30 December 2021, and AMJ bond 25 March 2022.

Of the 25 €50K prizes, 10 went to Dublin, 5 to Cork and 2 to Kildare.

One each to Meath, Cavan, Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Kerry, Limerick and Tipperary.

63% of the prizes to Dublin/Cork. They get around 53% of all the prizes every week, so a bit over-represented. But it is a tiny sample, and in the first 5 draws Dublin got no prize. Population wise the two outliers are Cavan and Roscommon, and the biggest “losers” would be Donegal, Wicklow and Louth.

Nine of the prizes were two letter prefix, before mid 2015, the oldest a DE bond from around 2001. AMK and AZV prefixes both won 2 x €50K with the AMK winners being on 04 and 11 March, an unlikely event statistically.

Looks like the annual report was released last week but is not posted online yet: https://www.anpost.com/Media-Centre/News/Sales-of-Prize-Bonds-total-%E2%82%AC660-5m-in-2021-as-fund#:~:text=Key%20highlights%20of%20the%202021,2020%3A%20%E2%82%AC4.1%20billion).

Nothing mentioned in the press release about the rates although the full report will presumbaly describe the rate reduction from 0.5% to 0.35% in 2021.

This now has to be rock bottom and the only way should be up (at least in short to medium term) because ECB are projected to "take its deposit rate from minus 0.5 per cent into positive territory by the end of this year and to above 1 per cent next year".  https://www.ft.com/content/a4b63bca-252f-4a77-9415-a898975a0c81

Could the NTMA/Prize Bond company brazenly ignore rising interest rates and keep the 0.35% rate because of the apparent popularity of prize bonds regardless of the low rate?

Comments from Michael McGrath (now Minister for Public Expenditure, projected to get Finance after the December change of Taoiseach/reshuffle) in 2016 are interesting to note: “However it’s important to remember that prize bonds do not pay interest and the real value of holdings is reduced by inflation over time. Many savers will feel short changed by the massive reduction in prizes being paid out."
