Cork 1 down with 10 to go. standard not great, some poor wides from both sides

We need to show some signs of an improvement, with regards to our tactics, defensive organization, and ability to do the nitty gritty stuff in our remaining games in the Munster championship. Unless we buck up our ideas, it's going to be an early championship exit. With the way the modern game is gone, money is very important. It's no coincidence, that the two must successful counties in hurling and football these last few years, Limerick and Dublin are the two most financially funded and financially well off counties in the country. Dublin have their government grants and the AIG sponsorship, while Limerick hurling is funded by a man of JP McManus's wealth.

That's not me trying to take way from the success of those counties, i'm just acknowledging that to win in modern day gaelic games at the elite level, a county needs to have some serious cash pumped into it. It's blatantly obvious that while we continue to pay off the Páirc Uí Chaoimh debt, that we will continue to find it a struggle, to fund the preparation of our senior intercounty teams, to the same extent that our rivals and competitors are doing. Hurling and football at elite senior intercounty level, is professional in all but name nowadays.

Great to see Ben O'Connor back. He was away with the Irish U20 Rugby so there could be a tug of war there in the future. He looks a really good player. Also good to see Daire O'Leary back from injury

Strange post posters here are well aware that this team has problems. Are management optimizing the playing resources? I don't think so. I'm not saying that Cork are going to make a sudden transformation into all Ireland winners, but with better management and tactics, Cork would have given a better account of themselves in the all Ireland final last year, and league final this year.

When did a Cork team win a Munster Club Championship last. In the 70s'80 and 90 they would have won about 50% of all these titles.

Money is a part of it but you need talented players as well. I am a Limerick and we had an U21, that won three All Irelandis on a row, but despite the fact that McManus was sponsoring them then as well they never got anywhere. I just think team are an exceptionally talented team, like the ones we had back in the twenties, thirties and early forties of the last Century and they would have won a lot, even If McManus was never there.

I have no issues with that at all. That's the way modern day intercounty hurling and football is now. You need a panel of players with the right blend of skill fitness and physicality, and Limerick for sure tick all the boxes there. Of course the backroom team is nearly as big as the playing panel nowadays, with all the people involved in the coaching and physical preparation of an intercounty team, and the dietitians and all that. Serious money is needed to fund all that. With all that said though, a bag of money isn't the reason why a Cork player, isn't able to fight compete for and win a dirty ball to save his life.

An interesting question. Maybe one of the Limerick posters can answer it. As long as we continue to pay for the Pairc Ui Chaoimh redevelopment, then we'll obviously continue to struggle the match the likes of Dublin and Limerick, when it comes to spending on the preparation of our intercounty teams.
