Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Mad man Aurier on now. Guaranteed penalty if Diaz keeps running at him.

Diogoal would have about 6 by now. No exaggeration. He seems to always be in the right place at the right time. Let's see what he can do now!

I want 3-0 here before I feel safe to be submerged in the submarine next week.

3-0 would be great, don’t concede one is crucial.

great win. Extremely comfortable. Salah getting his usual stonewall pen turned down but shouldn’t matter hopefully.

Job done for the first leg. Same again next time now.

One more goal over there and it's over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,081 ✭✭✭Fromvert

They're not really up to much and didn't create anything. If they open up even a little bit at home we'll score a few.

    Another CL final coming up!

    Mane limping there???

Good performance...really annoying that we have to go to Newcastle so early on Saturday but these lads are on a mission 👌

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,194 ✭✭✭McFly85

Could have been more, possibly should have. I’ve never seen a team fully committing to waiting to the second leg to have a go.

But 2 goal lead, and by the looks of it not much energy spent by the lads ahead of the weekend, grand job

Really solid display, great win, patience, disciplined, creative, no mistakes. Could have been 4:0, but also could have been 0:0 with the way Villarreal set up to defend. Wouldn’t say the tie is over, but I can’t see them beating us by 2 in Spain.

Comfortable enough in the end surely they won't be as defensive next week,on to the weekend another tough game at Newcastle but that's the joys of been up there challenging for top honours..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,791 ✭✭✭✭Charlie19

Well that couldn't of went much better..

Two goal lead, clean sheet and used 4 subs with Saturday in mind.

Tricky away fixture now to Newcastle with an early kickoff.

Job done tonight, which is the main thing.

Kind of took the foot off the gas in the end, conserving energy rather than chasing more goals. Can't argue against that. Controlled the game overall and didn't give Villarreal sniff at getting their own goal.

Thought the midfield was strong overall. Thiago brilliant. Fabinho I thought was off first half but second half was immense. A one man counter attack counterer if you will! Salah & Diaz very good also I thought, especially at keeping the width and stretching play before coming inside.

Fair play to Klopp and the coaches. They got the tactics spot on tonight.

Villareal had 1 shot at goal and 0 on target up to the 82nd minute.

The lads pressed and hounded them souch for 93 mins they couldn't even spring a real counter attack.

Rinse and repeat for the second leg.

2-0 up at half time in a CL final and no injuries. You can't have any complaints with that.

Will Bobby be back for the weekend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,741 ✭✭✭giveitholly

I wonder is Bobby's injury more serious than they are saying when Origi is after coming in from the cold the last two games and got minutes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,928 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

These last couple of games this season is where Thiago will be a big bonus in the dressing being a serial winner year in year out and knowing that pressure.

Yes most of the players have now won a title a champions league but Thiago knows how to win multiple titles in a season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,480 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

We're so consistent, the expectation to win is there always, and delivered upon so often that it's becoming more stimulating to the heart and mind to lose.

One thing on squad rotation etc. Klopp is using it a lot more now, naturally enough but some little thoughts I had tonight.

First half especially but while Diaz was on the pitch, I thought that Robbo was not as swashbuckling as much as he can be. It was more that he let Diaz do the hard sprinting wide on that wing and Robbo backed him up when needed. Diaz worked hard for the 70 odd mins and was even chasing back etc before a fresh Jota got a run at the defender then. But also Robbo had that extra bit in the tank to up his level then and it keeps him that bit fresher for Saturday too where it may be more of a swashbuckling game for Robbo with Jota or Mane ahead of him this time cutting inside.

On the opposite flank, Trent did a lot of running up and down and inside and so that is why he came off for a bit of a rest. Salah only really stayed wide and cut in. Salah didn't go chasing back at all. He conserved his energy and can be fresher to go running more Saturday now also while Trent might be that bit deeper again and more reserved with Matip coming in beside him.

Well probably see Keita start that game now and have 90 in his legs too. Maybe give Thiago a break now.

Going back to an earlier conversation about Hendo, I thought passing was more fluid on that side before Keita came on and defensively it was a little more ragged when he left. Keita offers huge benefits driving forward but if the other team has a good player on that side, he doesn’t offer the same protection when TAA goes forward by tucking in to cover at RB. Hendo has to play as much as possible from now til end of season against any team with a descent left winger/full back.

It was more faith than performance, it feels like the final beckons. Same in league, faith will play it's part, either way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,480 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

We went away to City and played a highline, nearly lost the match in first 30 minutes, but it's what we do, and it was a one off game, and we wanted to win it.

So how do we play away to Villarreal, we're 2-0 up, it's a two legged tie, and we don't need to win there.Continue to play a high line, and concede many chances, and look to var to confirm, '' off side by the hair on his chin''

Shirley we'll see a different approach considering what is at stake, Villarreal have score 38 goals at home, more than Real Madrid, Barca, Atletico , and anyone else in La Liga. It's a tough place to go, fans are so passionate, only 2 defeats at home.

But in saying all that, I know it will be 4-3-3, and business as usual. Are we a one trick pony.......but what an amazing trick, going for a quad.

737 passes to 272, domination of a champions league semi final, obviously not over yet but the result flatters villarreal

Although the goals have dried up a bit for Salah since he's come back from AFCON he's been adding onto the assist numbers.

    44 games - 30 goals and 14 assists (3644 minutes).

    And our other front men.

    Mane - 44 games - 20 goals and 3 assists (3302 minutes).

    Jota - 47 games - 21 goals and 5 assists (3061 minutes).

    Diaz - 19 games - 4 goals and 3 assists (1142 minutes).

    Bobby - 31 games - 11 goals and 4 assists (1665 minutes).

    Lord Origi - 17 games - 6 goals and 3 assists (572 minutes).

    Taki - 23 games - 9 goals and 1 assist (917 minutes).

81 goals combined is good going I think.
