Just looking at some of the EI routes Emerald Air are running. The punctuality stats seem shocking. Often fairly long delays.

Anyone know what the issue seems to be with them ?

I wonder will the new A320neos come with WiFi or seatback screens.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,231 ✭✭✭kevinandrew

They’ve continually suffered some serious delays since the recent ramp up in their flying schedule. Not sure what’s behind it but heard stories from some passengers which suggest internal communication is an issue and airside bus availability is slowing things down.

WiFi, probably. Seat back screens? No chance.

Stobart wasn't exactly great either back in the day either

At the time the airline stated that the repaint would take 2 years. This was to minimise unnecessary costs.

    Then Covid kicked in.

Why paint aircraft that you may not need to fly ever again?

so being 1 year behind schedule after a 2 year pandemic isn’t too bad.

The delay to the repainting schedule also means we’re closer to a natural fleet replacement cycle, evidenced with the recent A320neo order. This means some aircraft in old livery will never need to be repainted as they’ll now be earmarked for retirement.

As for the rebrand itself, Aer Lingus did most of it overnight, the rest of basics followed within a month. Excluding the livery, some traces of the old brand remain on airport equipment, miscellaneous items like table cloths and sugar packets, and on partner airline websites who have yet to update their graphics.

Agean had a much slower rebrand, it announced the new look and then seemingly forgot about it. The website, app, signage etc. stayed in the old branding for almost a year after the reveal. They’ve started to catch up now.

With Flybe recently commencing operations from Belfast City is EI likely to remain there with Flybe planning on operating flight to almost every destination that Aer Lingus is.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,231 ✭✭✭kevinandrew

Emerald & Aer Lingus were likely well aware Flybe intended to return to Belfast City long before it was announced, pretty much everyone knew their plans which is probably why Emerald got in there first. Emerald will have expected and prepared itself for a fight so not sure why they'd go running now.

Flybe will face many of the same problems they did before; same brand, same reputation, same aircraft and many of the same routes but this time with an even tougher operating environment and much bigger competition.

Emerald needs to get its house in order for the summer but it's got good backing and is supported by a healthy brand.

Flybe, bailed out, still failed and before Covid. Now restarting the same thing expecting it to be profitable is a big stretch.

I for one know who I would choose given the choice…

Thinking back to when EI-GEY needed a business class refit, I seem to remember the delay was due to the manufacturer experiencing high demand and dealing with a considerable backlog of orders. It was eventually completed just before the pandemic shut everything down.

EI-GEY then went into long term storage where it currently remains. Now Aer Lingus finds itself in a similar position with two more A330s needing a refit.

It’s obviously too late to refit them for this year but I’m wondering if they’ll have to place a new order with the manufacturer and wait on them to be delivered or if the airline has them already in their inventory from the likes of EI-LAX which was fully owned and was readily available for spares before being sold and scrapped.

Any talk of upgrading the on board internet offering ?

I see Starlink on aircraft will be a thing 'real soon now'

If certified for 320 would certification carry over to 321 ?

How come EI-EIL never seems to see transatlantic service, (I heard a rumours she isn’t able to) I think once it did ORD since her arrival.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,184 ✭✭✭goingnowhere

It doesn't have the normal EI business class interior for one.

lol. That wouldnt stop it going across the Atlantic. GEY/EIK was/are the same

Aer Lingus have gone back twice daily from Cork to Amsterdam and KLM prices are though the roof a the moment. 180 return Monday-Wednesday for Monday week with EI and 450 with KLM. Its a no brainer really and even the business passengers will move back at that price. And to be fair, its only a sandwich and a bottle of water in the difference in service.

  • Registered Users Posts: 34,862 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

No but might be a reason to keep it as a "spare" for now until demand gets higher.

The Dublin Airport cap is damaging the economy of Ireland as a whole, and must be scrapped forthwith.

Seems reasonable enough to assume it’s being limited to short haul until it’s required later in the summer when the remaining transatlantic services restart. Even though EI-EIK does transatlantic, it appears restricted to Chicago only.

This might be giving EI too much credit but they may be doing this to ensure some kind of product consistency until the aircraft can be retrofitted.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,500 ✭✭✭Jack1985

EI will keep EIK/EIL to ORD services to protect brand until refit.

  • Registered Users Posts: 397 ✭✭sherology

Why ORD? Is that low yield in the pointy end?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,184 ✭✭✭goingnowhere

    ORD is Chicago

No competition, strange then don't go with MCO

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,231 ✭✭✭kevinandrew

The frequency? MCO is only daily so you'll still end up sending one aircraft on another route which defeats the object of minimising product inconsistency. With ORD up to twice daily in peak summer, both aircraft can be assigned the route without sending them elsewhere too often.

According to Jethro's site, Aer Lingus are now getting 4x A320neo aircraft which were destined for Russian carrier SmartAvia but unsurprisingly were not taken up.

What will happen with the extra 4 320 NEO? Will they replace older 320 or add capacity? Could Cork get its extra a/c back?

    (apologises if mentioned before)

Hi all, is the JetBlue Aer Lingus relationship dead? It does not seem to allow what, on the face of it, looks like a good connection in JFK. Maybe not all Jet Blue routes are covered? If so, that is annoying.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,231 ✭✭✭kevinandrew

I believe it depends on the route. The partnership is otherwise still very much alive, in fact it was expanded again earlier this year.

    Very much still alive.

It all depends on the MCT and the destination, possibly not all are loaded into the system.
