Why? Through law... Funnily PiS means Law and Justice party. Why thugs are always saying opposite things that they do, even naming their party...

It wouldn't be a case of a facist regime "growing" next door and the UK losing it's marbles, but the nation losing it's marbles and a facist regime "growing".

In other words not only far fetched but a "marbleless" hypothesis.

The suggestion of a comparison with Russia and Ukraine is ludicrous.

Arestovych gave an interesting and very lengthy interview during the week - says he thinks the next three weeks will be crucial, but that it will end in a major Russian defeat (he seems very knowledgeable about military matters and tactics).

Recommended podcast: Latest episode of War on The Rocks featuring a Russian military capabilities expert.

Gets into the granular and very fine detail why the Russian offensive is a busted flush, why on a battalion-level Russia is failing, and that the Donbas offensive is the last roll of the dice for Putin to avoid a strategic defeat without declaring a general mobilisation of the populace. He also gets into what a general mobilisation would mean for Russian society and why that's a defeat in and of itself.

He's not necessarily predicting a victory for Ukraine, but the calculus for Russia is bad.

Seems both sides are taking heavy loses in the last 48hrs.

All this lose of life is so pointless and sad all over one madmans ego.

A general mobilisation will surely result in a large untrained, poorly equipped, frightened army being sent against a motivated, experienced, western backed army. It would be some slaughter and surely would eventually result in a move against Putin.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,381 ✭✭✭Yurt2

That's pretty much the assessment (except the move against Putin, which he's not willing to make a prediction on as it's in the realms of palace intruige and not a defence matter).

I don't think he's mad, as in needing to be certified or anything.

What he is, is pure unadulterated evil. Adolf's twin brother if you will.

Both men knew/know no bounds when it comes to hatred towards other races and ideals, and both were/are willing to plumb the depths of depravity to achieve it. They'll both meet in hell that's for sure.

Sadly a deeper look shows Russia is winning and today was a bad day for the Ukraine army.

Where did you see that? It seems so hard to get real time info on how things are going.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,346 ✭✭✭Jinglejangle69

    Twitter, Reddit etc.

A good browse on twitter past the headline grabbing tweets shows the true situation, plus Zelensky for the first time admitting today they are taking huge losses.

Maybe UK is not official iso code for United Kingdom, but i dont think its acceptable to call ukraine UK in this thread, when UK/GB is mentioned here quite a lot. Its like calling IcEland IE and NIgeria NI in "United-Ireland" thread

Latest Russian prisoner swap tactics, and the barbaric tortures they've inflicted on civilian prisoners who they kidnapped.

    22:17

Russia attempts to trade civilians for military prisoners - Ukraine

    Joel Gunter

    Reporting from Kyiv

Moscow has attempted to trade Ukrainian civilians for Russian military prisoners, according to Ukraine’s deputy prime minister - a move forbidden by the Geneva Convention.

Iryna Vereshchuk told the BBC that her office, which is responsible for negotiating prisoner swaps, declined and instructed Russia to send back Ukrainian civilians it had taken.

There is growing evidence that Russia has forcibly deported large numbers of civilians across the border since it invaded the country in February.

Ms Vereshchuk said they were being used as hostages.“That's why they captured all these hostages - civilians, women, employees of local councils, to try and use them," she said.

“We know there are more than a thousand hostages there - including almost 500 women,” she said. “We know they are in prisons and pre-trial detention centres in Kursk, in Briansk, in Riazan, in Rostov."

She said Russia had also dragged its feet in sending back women civilians. “We are extracting women almost with pliers,” she said. “Now we refuse to hold an exchange with no women in the list. That is how we try to somehow rescue our women and civilians.”

In the most recent exchange, nine civilians were sent back with severe injuries, including amputations performed in Russia.

“There were badly injured people in this exchange - amputated limbs, sepsis, other severe injuries," Ms Vereshchuk said.

“There were clear signs of torture," she said. "The stories they told us are terrible."

Its long since time, that nato stopped sitting on its hands and give them ukraines their no-fly zone

    These sanctions simply arent working,

they sat on hands for years during balkens, looking on at war crimes being committed, nothing was learned from that

Nobody knows the true loses of course but I still think Putin has the numbers especially as he doesn't care about his own soldiers and will keep sending them in .I would love to see them pushed back and out but that is still an outside bet I think.I would think Putin could still go for something either chemical or nuke rather than face a very public and humiliating defeat .We all know he is a very dangerous and capable of anything to keep face as he would see it .

"We have serious losses but the Russians' losses are much much bigger...They have colossal losses,"

    presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych said.

So from that you see Russia winning today and Ukraine loosing today?

Has there been any major towns/key supply hubs taken by Russia in the past 24hrs?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,804 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

Has this not being explained over and over again?

NATO would need to shoot down any and all planes over Ukraine, including Ukranian ones.

A lot of cruise missiles are being air launched within Russian airspace, so NATO would need to take those planes out (in Russian airspace).

Take out SAM sites within Russia also. The Black Sea fleet would also need to be sunk by NATO including the subs there.

Sure none of that would be seen as a massive escalation from the Russian POV would it?

You need to be careful what you read.

I follow both Ukrainian and Russian sympathisers. If you only only relied on Russian propaganda, you would absolutely think that Russia was winning easily here. If you only relied on Ukrainian propaganda, you would absolutely think that Ukraine was winning easily.

As far as I can tell, the truth is right down the middle. Russia are making very modest gains, but sustaining high casualties for very little ground gained. Ukraine are also sustaining high losses, but are still holding on and giving as good as they are getting.

I don't see either side making a significant breakthrough and unless a political agreement is signed, thousands on both sides will continue to die.

This is how the Russians are raising morale at a military base near the border with Ukraine

The plaques will be used to display photos of soldiers of the Russian Federation. The first photo shows a blackboard with a gray background resembling clouds of smoke. The inscription on it reads: "They betrayed their comrades by escaping from the battlefield", underneath there are 15 empty fields. According to the journalist, this plaque "will hang portraits of those who refuse to go to war against Ukraine".

In the second photo there is a plaque with the inscription: "They heroically carry out tasks, defending their homeland". There are also 15 fields here, probably for photos. The plaque is red, with a five-pointed star - a symbol of the armed forces of Russia - and an image of a soldier in combat equipment.

Let them see it as a massive escalation??

They are literally going from town to town committing massacres, they started the war,so can have no complaints on its trajectory....

whatever russia can throw at nato, will cause less killing than the tens of thousands of ukraines who will die over this summer as they grind out a victory by sheer force of numbers and crushing opposition.....

Their wars in chehyna will look like an exercise inrestraint by time the galway races come around

Russia cares naught for the rules of the world and the global consensus organisations they signed up for

They are more aligned with the Nazi's than anything else at this point and any organisation that has not thrown them out by this point should be ashamed of themselves and any business still dealing with them should be immediately boycotted

Germans would do well to think every time they boil a kettle of water on their gas stove they are funding the killing and torture of innocent people

It's really incredulous to think there is a war waging in Europe again and it's like every man for themselves (this is how world wars start) - this war could be stopped in an heartbeat if the sentiment was there. The US seem to be the only one doing anything of note to help them along with a few other countries who fear they are next, and that would likely be the reality if Ukraine falls.

One voice from all the civilised countries in the world telling Russia to immediately retreat or face the retributions would solve this in an instant instead of spending billions to just drip feed ammunitions etc to Ukraine to try and defend itself. Germany in WWII was allowed the same grace to just keep pushing and pushing with no retaliation until they were at the point they had gone too far making it even harder to stop them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,804 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

Do you not see the risk of it becoming an actual World War going that route?

Do you not think a lot more will die if it becomes a World War or spreads beyond Ukraine's borders?

Even Ukraine are no longer calling for a no fly zone, they have been given the tools needed to win the war, with even more NATO equipment arriving daily.

Russia still do not have air superiority.

I’m no defender of Putin but Ukrainians and Russians are they same ethnic group, largely so I don’t think “race” has anything to do with it, it’s just a pure power play. There’s a good bbc podcast series called Putin that explains a lot

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,804 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

I didn't post the map, so I don't know why you're asking me.

I'll bet 100% it's not a Russian map source. Maybe you have another map that shows the gains by Russia in the past 24hrs?

Or what major towns or cities have been taken by the Russians in the past 24 hours?

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,908 ✭✭✭✭listermint

    Yes indeed.

The war must be going well when.

    1. Putin has taken direct control over the war and given responsibility of running the country to the PM.

    2. You are now using submarines to launch cruise missiles because your ships are either too **** or are extremely reluctant to go anywhere near land.

Let's not mention your active troops in regions having shootouts with each other over spoils of war.

Some level of winning going on its incredible..
