I was talking about Serrano in case you missed that.

I watched the Ring podcast on this. Michael Montero says he scored the fight at the time and then again after watching a reply afterwards and had it 6-4 to Taylor both times despite changing scoring on various rounds. (First time he gave Taylor, 1,2,3,8,9 ,10 and second time he gave her 1,2,4,7,8,9). He basically says that 3,4,7 and 10 were tossup rounds and that even 6 could have been scored either way.

He also says the judges scoring it 7-3 to Taylor were wrong but also criticises Chris Mannix for giving 3 of the first 4 rounds to Serrano (despite the fact that Mannix ended up scoring it 5-5).

Basically what I take from this is that scoring it 7-4 or even 8-2 Taylor was perfectly legit.

Serrano really only won the 5th clearly and edged the 6th but everything else you could legitimately give to Taylor. I definitely think the first Persoon fight was closer and I scored that one to Taylor too.

People are clouded by the fact that the clearest round of the fight was the 5th to Serrano but that only gets her 1 point.

Yep. Folks hung up on the very strong rd 5. Then takes time to shake that feeling, and it can influence how you view and interpret what comes after. Rd 5 was 10-9 only, although 10-8 on one card. I simply scored each round like it as the first round, as the judges do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,139 ✭✭✭✭normanoffside

Someone very wisely said that everyone agrees Taylor won round 1, 8 and 9 while Serrano won 5 and 6 clearly. That makes it 3-2 on clear rounds to Taylor and you can really score the other 5 how you like.

Could be. Wouldn't want to be trying to run cross-country and box at the same time, that's for sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,835 ✭✭✭Patsy167

Does anyone know why Serrano appeared to be wearing regular runners in the fight? It looked like they weren't giving the same support that boxing shoes would.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,835 ✭✭✭Patsy167

I don't for a minute buy the talk of a Croke Park October fight. It is complete posturing to keep the Irish fans happy with no genuine intention of making it happen. Back to NY in December far more realistic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Katie made it clear she wants to fight here. They'll fill the place and the atmosphere will be electric. I'd say it's 99% certain to happen. The GAA will be delighted to have Ireland's most popular sportsperson advertising Croke Park.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,835 ✭✭✭Patsy167

I really do hope you are right but it's a hell of a risk if they are targeting October. Not ideal for those attending or the worldwide PPV audience.

There won’t be a worldwide PPV audience. It’ll be on DAZN

Looking forward to the first Irish politician to call for it to be on RTE though

An October bout with require both women to start a training camp in June at the latest. I guess its doable but its tough on them with the amount of damage they took.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,729 ✭✭✭✭walshb

No it would not...training camps are anywhere from 8-12 weeks really

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,139 ✭✭✭✭normanoffside

While I still hope Katie retires I think she will probably improve for a rematch.

She won the 2nd Persoon fight much more clearly and seemed to have learned from her mistakes in the first fight.

If she can just avoid doing what she did in round 5 it should be a fairly clear victory.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,729 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Hmm, but Persoon is a fighter a lot easier to learn from and improve for....

Serrano has a lot more technical skills, as well as the proven ability now to get to and hurt Katie.

Saying if she can avoid doing what she did isn't at all easy. Katie tried pretty much all night to box smart, move, hit and not get hit; but you can't always do that. Like I said before, her defense is not like Mayweather's or Toney's, so she needs to rely on feet and movement much more.

It was Katie's heart and guts and fight when she was trapped and needed to fight/survive that likely won her scores in the judges' minds.

For most the fight Katie negated Serrano with her movement, feet, spoiling and scoring. She juts had a few moment where she was forced to fight.

Katie's biggest weaknesses for me (for Searrano) are Katie's lack of physical presences/strength, and her lack of any real power. Serrano seemed to boss the flow more, and was physically stronger. Katie is not physically that durable/strong

Katie could win a rematch, but it would be a very risky fight in my view.

Katie should move on from this - she does not want to take that beating again, even though she won. She should cash in on a Croke park gig with 80'000 people and then retire.

She has achieved more than enough in the ring.

DAZN announced today that 1.5 million watched the fight on its platform on Saturday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,729 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Be interesting to see the numbers for Canelo this week; probably less due to U.S. and Canada needing to pay quite a whack to watch it

Katie should rematch Serrano in Croker.

Katie is clearly the better boxer and will have learned loads from that fight.

Rematch in Croker and sail off into the sunset.

Yeah, I thought the fact it’d be on DAZN meant there’s be no pay per views as such. But then I heard a woman on 2FM say a rematch probably wouldn’t be in Dublin because it’d be hard sell PPVs. Does DAZN charge for certain fights as well as charging a subscription in the US?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,314 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

She was probably just bluffing. DAZN do PPV in the US but (despite what some will say) womens boxing isn’t at that stage yet IMO. Doesn’t matter if it’s in Dublin or Vegas

The Canelo fight this weekend is $80 if you’re not a DAZN subscriber in the US and $60 if you are (on top of your $20 a month sub)

Does anyone know why a homecoming parade/party to celebrate Katy Taylor's victory at the weekend was not considered? It might be laughed at but think of how much economic activity and memories for kids it would generate.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,767 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Why would it? Should every individual match/performance/victory from an Irish sportsperson or team necessitate a homecoming?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,570 ✭✭✭celt262

I wonder would they put on a second night if it sold out quick and demand was there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,640 ✭✭✭✭Calahonda52

Yes Yes yes in general and particularly in this case.

Are you on misogynistic light milk?

Ah here, it’s not misogynistic to suggest ‘homecomings’ should be very limited in their use.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,817 ✭✭✭Sunny Disposition

I'm guessing she hasn't come back to Ireland? Haven't seen pictures of her anyway.

Hearn has said that a rematch in Dublin in October isn't a runner. I'd say if it happens it'll be after St Patrick's Day 2023.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,767 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

One of the stupidest posts I've ever seen on boards. And that's saying something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,729 ✭✭✭✭walshb

We only do homecomings when we reach quarter finals....:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,835 ✭✭✭Patsy167

It feels like a massive missed opportunity. It's not often we have a sportsperson achieve greatness on the world stage so why not?

I wouldn't necessarily see it as a missed opportunity tbf. Is she definitely back in Ireland and did she want an event like that? You'd have to be sure she was available and amenable to say it's a missed opportunity. It would have been a nice event though, and helped promote female participation in sport.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,729 ✭✭✭✭walshb

katie is not livng in Ireland, though. She is based and trains in the U.S.

So, no real homecoming to do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,915 ✭✭✭Morrison J

She hasn't been home. Canelo invited her to his fight in Vegas tonight. Going to be introduced to the crowd at some stage apparently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,729 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Didn’t take Serrano long to change her tune. She’s had time to reflect.

She said she thought she won the fight when interviewed in the ring after the fight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,729 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Yes, that’s right. I wasn’t buying into her “magnanimous” in defeat. She’s now subtly pushing the robbed agenda that her twit promoter is on..

  • Registered Users Posts: 361 ✭✭section4

I think Katie should retire , she is looking a lot more bashed up these days, her nose was badly damaged in that fight

obviously the rematch is worth a lot and yes maybe she should go fir that, but she in boxing a long time and I don’t like it when I see a boxer as badly damaged around the nose and eyes as she is now. One of the things that I liked about her was that she was good and still retained her nice features , I find when boxers do not notice how their face is changing it is not a good sign.

I seen too many ex pros walking around years after they retired in a bad way.

Looks like the Three Arena. If it happens. Better I think.

    GAA loves the money!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,984 ✭✭✭Big Ears

Maybe, but it is noteworthy that Landsdowne wasn't chosen as an alternative.

Plenty of concerts manage to rent Croke Park and make a significant profit, and the government had outlined they were willing to help get a Taylor fight over the line at Croke Park.

I reckon Eddie is just afraid it would sell badly and the financial risk would be too high.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,314 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Lansdowne is not available on the date they wanted - May 20th

I don’t think you can ever take the word of a boxing promoter for gospel either

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,471 ✭✭✭funkey_monkey

    That they do.

However, pricing yourself out of the market is a dumb move. Is Eddie being honest here - 3 times more???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,729 ✭✭✭✭walshb

I think 3Arena make for far better viewing/atmosphere. It will absolutely sell out no bother. Tickets be pricey, though due to capacity being far less than Croke Park. I think 3Arena only about 10000 capacity

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,660 ✭✭✭avfc1874

I don't think it would sell out, woman's boxing like football or gaa isn't as well supported as made out, a lot of the tickets are heavily subserdised for woman's soccer, like kids go free,

I wouldn't believe anything Eddie hearn said, he cares only for his pocket,

People wouldn't pay big money to watch women's boxing, they'd talk the talk saying id definitely go, but when they see the ticket prices, it'd be ah I'll probably watch it on the telly ,

Eddie hearn is a business man, he's not going to agree the boxers fee, which he won't be able to back out of, Only half fill the stadium, which would mean less profit for him,

Can anyone think of any boxing promoter who cared more about their fighters health/wellbeing than money?

Any boxing book I've read, the fighter was 9 times out of 10 shafted by the promoter,

I heard someone say it'd sell out in minutes 🤔🤔🙄

  • Registered Users Posts: 976 ✭✭✭AdrianG08

Don't ever underestimate the Irish publics ability to jump on a bandwagon.

If enough people on facebook read about a cow sh*tting in a field, 100k would buy tickets to see it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,729 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Croke Park would sell out, and not because of the huge interest in women’s boxing. It’s a once in a lifetime historic type event. People would go just to be there. Nothing to do with even liking sport. Hype hype hype. Always sells. Lot people are just event junkies. And Katie is a huge name here, as well as being globally known.

GAA claiming they are unwilling to pay extra security costs which is fair enough imo. Why should they pay for keeping the Kinihans in check?
