    Hi All,

I have a steel shed in the garden which I would like to paint. Can anyone advise of what primer / paint would be suitable and hardwearing?

I can upload photos if that would help.

    Thanks!

Steel sheds are usually made from plastic coated steel, usually modified PVC.

PVC isn't the best at taking paint. To do so you'll likely need to sand it down and then spray it with a plastic paint.

Can you use trellis or a hedge to mask it instead?

Ah that's annoying. I thought I could get away with a light sand and BIN before painting.

Covering it isnt really an option unfortunately. It's huge and the garden is tiny so I cant really afford to lose any more space in it. Also the roof colour is probably the more off putting one!

Painting garden sheds regularly can be a pain. Saw a tv programme recently where the couple wanted a nice wooden style shed to fit in with their garden but a steel shed was more in their budget. Later on they fixed some type of cladding sheets all over the steel shed - no painting needed ever again and it looked very well. It was in UK and didn't mention cost, but they were on a very small budget to do a lot of work to their house so I'd say it was inexpensive.

If you don't like the look of your shed and can't paint it, maybe those panels are a possibility or trellis is good for disguising with plants, but plants need to be looked after. One of my neighbours put trellis panels covered in artificial ivy on a shed, it looks well and no maintenance.

I have a thing against plastic plants. Particularly outdoors because wildlife try and eat them which isn't good. It's annoying because they really do fix the aesthetics problem!

Putting timber cladding on it is a fools errand. It'll just rot unless you treat it with some kind of fence paint every year. And then it'll still rot anyway.

Better off leaving the metal weather naturally. It is probably galvanised anyway so it won't corrode in a significant way for lack of paint.

No I'm painting it for purely aesthetic reasons. It looks like a military building and really doesnt go with the rest of the garden.

I'd suggest painting it with Syn oxide or Gal oxide red, blue , green or grey but only after giving it a thorough sandpapering to give the paint a good key.

Any sort of gloss DIY type paints will just start bubbling and peeling after a year or two and you will lock yourself into a cycle of constant painting.

Maybe this is a silly idea, but can you wrap it? Similar to how cars are wrapped?

Ordinary metal paint won't do, you need to paint with Plastisol Metal Cladding paint, it comes in a full range of RAL colours. A good power wash and light sanding prior to painting (obviously!) and it should last up to 10 years.

You'd want a good sanding to thoroughly dull and key the surface of the plastic coating.

We painted over our metal shed 2yrs ago with Dulux Galoxide paint - grey. It turned out very nice compared to what was there before. Its designed for painting farm buildings so cheaper than other options.

It was a pain to put on and has a strong smell off it. Also very hard to remove
