Xmas present of components

Hey folks,

This one is a bit tricky. Looking to get some components for the auld fella doing his build. he's already got some parts (PSU -750W , Hardrives, and a whole bunch of peripherals) but we as a family are looking to get him some presents and we have a sort of budget per person which I'm kinda hoping we can sync up to parts:

CPU - 500 euro max

motherboard - 200 euro max

RAM - 100 euro max

Case - 100 euro max

We acknowledge that the GPU shortage is still in place so hoping we can live without that for the next while (birthday is in April) and he can play with this for now until we can get one.

Would love any help or direction to get some compatibility of components?

5600G's iGPU is a bit faster than a GT1030, and it won't bottleneck a GPU once you upgrade.

Constantly making my life easier in here! Thanks a million K.O.Kiki! we're significantly under budget there for the CPU, are we at the point of diminishing returns or is it compatibility with existing parts?

Is the PSU still in warranty? I'd tend towards not re-using old PSUs for non-budget builds unless they are (and even then if it's most of the way through its warranty I'd take the chance to move on unless the budget was too tight). I'd also presume "hard drives" includes a reasonable ssd or else I'd add that to the top of the list!

I was looking at the uk pcpartpicker and coming up with a different list to K.O. Kiki's but he's probably right that it's back off to Germany for us all now! Either way with the budget you could either pop in the PSU and ssd or you could even grab a used gpu from CEX instead.

K.O. Kiki, if you don't mind me asking, why did you pick that Gigabyte board? You replied before me earlier while I was poking around so I wasn't going to bother adding my take but I had come up with the MSI B550-A Pro as the cheapest that has solid VRMs, a usb 3.2 gen 2 header (for the 4000D) and most importantly bios flashback.

So just for the sake of presenting a similar but different take here's what I was coming up with re-jigged to use the German stores instead of Amazon UK cause K.O. is no doubt right at this point that going the German route is saner.

Yes, that SSD is probably overkill but in the context of a present going for a fast pci-e 4.0 one works for me. Likewise the 850W PSU really just so you can throw anything in there in terms of a gpu down the road. Overall it's all a bit premium and geared towards hopefully being "easy to build" with the one ufffff factor being the likelihood of having to use the bios flashback to get the cpu supported, I'm not sure if there's a sane place to get motherboards guaranteed to be updated :(

The returns on the cpu upgrade (5700G Vs 5600G) would depend on what you are doing, they are about the same price per core though so I'd thrown it in there when you had given a €500 cpu budget ;) There's nothing past it in the AMD line up with an onboard gpu and the Intel side of things is a can of worms (power draw meaning cooling, DDR5 prices, motherboard prices, new platform compatibility issues or else stepping back a generation or two at which point there's nothing really to gain and either way onboard gpu power to lose) so it's not worth it here imho.

If you had a gpu and cpu power was a priority there's the 12 and 16 core parts along with a refresh coming "soon" but for now they are over €500 never mind the gpu issue.

Sorry, that was meant to be the Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite AX V2 - the cheapest B550 with good VRMs, USB-C 3.2 header, BIOS-Flashback & WiFi 6. Damn confusing product stacks!

5700G vs 5600G: Obviously the 8-core is faster overall, but IMHO it's not worth it if you'll be pairing it with a GPU - speaking of which, GTX 970 can be found used for 200 (220 from CEX with 2yrs warranty).

If you are on a budget you may consider trying the 5600G graphics on its own. If deemed enough you can sell the discrete card for 100-200€ on the used card market.
