What’s your controversial motoring opinion?

There’s a concurrent thread on controversial food opinions so lets start on on controversial motoring opinions.

1: Replacing the IRL with D and/or putting German tax stickers on your car makes you look like a clown.

2: Speeding fines / penalties should be proportional to the offence. 54 km/h in a 50km/h zone is NOT deserving of penalty points.

3: I see a car as a means to get from A to B. If it has a few “cosmetic issues”, it doesn’t bother me, as long as the car is mechanically safe.

4: Abolish having to display the paper tax and NCT disc and only display insurance (for third party crashes/ damage).

Driving 150 km/h on a motorway is not dangerous in a modern well maintained car.

Might not be all that controversial because it seems that a hell of a lot of drivers do it, but I’d take the license off anyone who insists on driving on the outside and middle lanes when they have an empty road in front of them

Any car parked incorrectly with a registration meaning that the fine won't be paid should instead be set ablaze in situ.

    1. Using your brakes on the motorway is deserving of 3 points
    2. Driving too close to a car on the motorway is deserving of 6 points
    3. Driving too close to a car on the motorway is more dangerous than driving at 150km/h
    4. If you're going off at the first exit on a roundabout, stay in the left lane, all other exits, right lane.

I see our resident Walter Mitty poster is back again under another newly created account. Dollar Thief was it last week? Another ban will be incoming no doubt.

Until Betty in her car is doing 80 km/h in the fast lane because she’s already going “fasht”.

man i'm going to kill someone soon,i live in a town in a quiet estate that leads onto a busy road out of town, the visibility of cars on your right is very poor, so my routine is stick nose out, look right look left look right once more and then foot to the floor to get out before someone appears behind me doing over 80kmh flashing lights and losing the rag, i just use my extended forefinger at present but will get out next time and pull them out through their sunroof

Where all the loonies at? Oh, they're here in this thread :D

For point 4, it's generally left lane for first and second exit, providing the second exit is at 12 o'clock or before. If after, then right lane.

Speed should be limited on all vehicles so they can't travel over the speed limit.

The traffic police / patrols don give a fųck a out safety they are only interested in catching people on the motorway or dual carriageway to get their detection numbers up

I’d like to see the government invest in a fleet of mobile car crushers.

When a banned driver, uninsured driver or unaccompanied learner permit holder is caught driving, the mobile car crusher is called, turns up and the car is crushed on the spot with the invoice presented to the driver.

Rubberneckers should have their legs broken. 😜

People who pull out of a side road like they're in a hurry but then cause you to brake because they then proceed to drive at 30Kmp , 😡

    At least 3 penalty points

Lots of these aren’t very controversial 🤭

Drivers who pull out from a hard shoulder without accelerating to match the speed of traffic already on the motorway should be banned from driving for 6 months and have to resit their driving test before being allowed back behind the wheel.

Mobile phone in hand or watching it while driving..... €300 fine & three penalty points. Exception if using Google maps, Waze etc. to navigate.

NCT is rigged to fail a set percentage of cars, part of govt. agenda to push people out of engine motorcars.

Loitering munitions should be used against mid lane hoggers

Remove the provision in force since October 2018 , that a motorist who isn’t impaired by alcohol can be disqualified.

Must’ve been asleep. What provision is that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,685 ✭✭✭User1998

NCT doesn’t test the engine so an electric car is just as likely to fail. (Excluding emissions)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 611 ✭✭✭GNWoodd

Road Traffic ( Amendment ) Act 2018 . Provides for automatic disqualification for certain offences . Will be declared ultra vires in due course.

Major issue there with the driving test where you must pass it before you are allowed on the motorway. Im not suggesting that learners should be allowed on the motorway but its daft that someone who has just passed the test can now drive home from the test center on the motorway with nothing but theory to guide them .

Punishment for middle lane hoggers should be a crushed car. And the hogger should be required to operate the crushing machine on the day. Then a lifetime ban should apply.

    Same goes for undertaking.

And before you say it, no, the person being undertaken is not necessarily in the wrong (they usually are) but not always.

There are a handful of situations where the “undertaker” is in the wrong.

The Toyota Avensis is the modern equivalent of the Morris Marina.

Any truck driver on the motorway who's truck is travelling about 0.00000001kmh faster than the truck he's overtaking, (said truck then blocking the fast lane for about 3km) should be hung from the wing mirrors by his underpants
